@cat Do watch what you're writing. We don't want adult or NSFW content here.

@cat I'd totally validate that if I was a random mod who saw a flag on that.

cat
potnoodlecat

...and I think my last message needs to be pinned.

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. That word has been used many times before in RA (not that I think it should be used).

12:07 AM
The majority of recent posts containing this word come from cat (under various usernames).

@DavidPostill There's a reasonable chance that would have been flagged, and I'd rather have people whine about (minor) censorship than whine about a suspension
@bwDraco eh, We deal with the issues we have now. There is no profit from digging up past mentions.

(•_•)

Better not post xkcd.com/1615 ever again then ;)

Ugh, just got back from the office after upgrading all the machines to Windows 10. That took way longer than I expected

4 hours ago, by DavidPostill
54 mins ago, by cat
Eh, so it took 6 minutes to install Windows 10.

12:11 AM
@DavidPostill there was once a arguement over whether xkcd.com/243 was appropriate for use in SU

@BenN You were clearly unlucky :)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek At a guess: is it the anatomy one? Or the Lenovo mouse thingo one?

Well, one of the machines was super slow, and the upgrade also killed the graphics drivers, so I had to get those again

The latter

@JourneymanGeek I can see why ...

12:14 AM
Took me about 30 minutes to install.

Also, the update broke Office, so I had to reinstall that -_-

@151533 Does this register as a ping, Ben N?

@bwDraco it would not
Since I requested that as a feature after the time of the two bobs.

Curious if this can be used as a way to unambiguously ping a user.
I guess not.

@JourneymanGeek It looks like a fair number of xkcds should now be avoided (there are 22 if you search for sex) :/

12:19 AM
If it's super important that you poke a specific user but it's not important if you use an existing room, you can just search for the username on chat.stackexchange.com and pick the right one from their main profile(s)

@DavidPostill I consider context important though

@DavidPostill Semi-relevant yet fully hilarious Old New Thing: For a brief shining moment, DirectX was more popular than another word that ends in x

If its relevant I'd be fine with it

@JourneymanGeek Phew ;P
@BenN lol

Also, of course, I prefer soft touch moderation ._.

12:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek My recent conduct should reflect a bit of a shift towards this approach. It's about time.
This is why I didn't flag the message, only warned.

@bwDraco I probably wouldn't even have bothered tbh

Why are entry-level developer jobs so hard to find?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ah. There's a few really NSFW ones :P

Cause the system is broken?

Aye. The economy is a harsh mistress :\

12:41 AM
I've got 6 years of experience in the field I'm mostly applying to. I've gotten two interviews so far

I think it's because newly-qualified-enough college kids manage to get them

You really got to rely on networking to get your foot in the door

And yeah, networking will get you a long way. If you can't get that, having built something awesome helps some

Bob
Or currently having a job :\

The front door is locked and barred. You have to find a suitable window
But I'm currently in a funk after talking to the government body that's supposed to help people like me.

12:43 AM
@BenN Not just built something, but built something awesome. Yikes.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Didn't you say that was fairly useless the other day?

It is the government, after all ;)

I'm just not able to get myself to keep working on JS.

@Bob yeah. kinda depressed after that TBH.

Q: How can I retrieve a directory (folder) from Ubuntu Server 14.04 VM without FTP, SCP, or NFS

Brandon SniderI am in a bit of a sticky situation. I started my current job a few months ago, and I have a web application running on an apache web server (a simple PHP-based one). I need to update this code to fix some problems in the application, and I'd like to get the code into a proper source code environ...

@JourneymanGeek No luck with the other interviews? :(

@Bob No one's calling

itsolutions.com.sg this is reassuring

about half the websites for these companies are down

Bob
@JourneymanGeek you can offer to fix them?

This is tempting.
In ONE case she's given the wrong website

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not sure if accident or "accident"

1:00 AM
@Bob let settle on incompetence.
yeah, I don't think she checked

Windows 10 install starting on main machine. Interestingly, it lets everything keep going until the first reboot, so I can use my browser on the other screen even while the installer is in fullscreen mode

1:31 AM

hm. Nice. The person who vetted my resume suggested I strip out basically anything that's a unique selling point, talks about me as a person, or would interest a muggle.
And one of these companies, (which I shall not link here) have a website that looks classic spammer

2:44 AM
Ugh. Long sleeves feel weird.

I welcome your opinion on it :)

will have to listen a bit later :P
ewww
Azure uses Opteron CPUs

well there goes the woofer :-)

lol
I should warn subwoofer users... you will upset your neighbors :)

a ramp at the beginning would have fixed that. and there seems to be disortion (unintended type) i didnt download the file to see clipping?

I will do a better mastering pass tomorrow but I'm tired -_-
feel free to listen to the other garbage that barely passes for music as well!

@Bob amd's gotta stay afloat somehow.

4:57 AM

@bob hey why do all austrailian travel trailers (aka caravan?) are designed like there is no road, and no repair places , no hookups, no rv park ever 20 miles, and no tow facilities for the next 200 miles :-) Some of the Au-RV stuff makes US RVing look like it is for wallmart parking lots.

Bob
@Psycogeek because most places you go, that's true

5:12 AM
most of thier designs are more like what i would concentrate on when going mobile. most of the US designs seem to lean more towards fluffy , pretty, psudo luxery (that fails to last). wouldnt survive the first day of the zombie infestations :-)
problem with the rugged build though is , weight, and more costs, although i should have doller converted.
first usable wheel suspention system was also Au. many of these are like here is an axel and some wheels good luck :-)

Bob
@Psycogeek aren't trailer parks more a US thing? :P

the americans "travel" the austrailians go on "expeditions" that word would scare most "travelers" away .

Bob
> Unlike in the US, where trailer parks typically provide housing for low-income residents, in Australia they have historically been used as tourist accommodations.
TIL

@Bob well i was asking, is it? do you have 30,000 pre-designated camping rving destination spots with $fees and services ?

Bob
@Psycogeek that's not really my thing tbh so I don't know much about it

5:24 AM
Trailer park=mobile home= cheap home = not really mobile at all, because it costs 2-5 months rent to move one.

Bob
@electronbeam Listening now - it's nice, a tad bass-heavy imo but would be great as part of a game soundtrack :D

@Bob it's funny you say that, because I have a game I am designing that this was written for

Bob
@electronbeam ooh, what kind of game?
huh, Mirror's Edge theme :D

well, I have to get a team together to create it.. .I would do a ton of the art and music and creative direction and stuff
but it's basically a PC spiritual successor to mario kart with vaporwave/80's overtones and abilities
I want to tell you more, but I'd have to do it in private. Hit me up on Telegram.
<-same username

Bob
@electronbeam "vaporwave" just makes me think of this :P

5:31 AM
@Bob that's the idea.

Bob
I suppose I've been putting off downloading YAMS (Yet Another Messaging Service) for long enough :P

Telegram rocks... it's encrypted <3

6:19 AM
Ugh. I have very flaggable things to say about the local job office equivalent

6:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek "They're awesome! Everyone must go here! 5 stars, would buy again!" ?

Many more swearwords.... Anatomical improbability and a barwire wrapped personal gadget the size of your arm needed.
There's a vacancy list the second person I talked to thought the first person informed me
So. I'm skimming 70 pages of job descriptions ....
One of this looks suspiciously like a job for the man whose job is not to touch the computer....

It's good when the job agency is good at agenting jobs.
@JourneymanGeek that sounds like a job I could do...

I'll share on the gitter chan when I get home.
I might need to swear a lot

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not much luck with the recruiters either?

@JourneymanGeek I'm a strong believer that what the world needs is a lot of little soundproof cabinets where people can just go in and scream and curse and generally vent at the top of their lungs.
@JourneymanGeek am I still on/welcome in that gitter chat? I think I lost the app last time my phone got a factory reset

6:46 AM
@Mokubai you ought to be.

Bob
Huh. Win10 RS is already RTM?
There's cumulative updates out too...

@Bob nope. Most of the job fair vacancies are contract based

Bob
@Mokubai Yea as long as you still have your github login
@JourneymanGeek :(
@Mokubai 'net is pretty soundproof

Asking me whether my degree was part or full time felt borderline offensive....

Bob
That seems... fairly pointless info
as in, it really shouldn't matter

6:49 AM
@Bob there's a bias here with people who studied part time.
I'm not the academic sort :(

Bob
@JourneymanGeek urk

@JourneymanGeek creative adjustment, if it was part time it was becues of your continued hands on study in your cold fusion project.

I was running IT for a small company at the same time.

they are always looking for a way to downplay things, the art is to reverse that into an upside for you.
I wanted to go to college full time, but i also wanted to work fulltime, so i did both.
yea I lied :-) I didnt want to do either , but i did.

7:32 AM
I speak to you LIVE from Windows 10!

oh dear
did your win 10 upgrade not go according to plan?

i am just waiting till win10 SP2
Actually i am still waiting for win7s sp2 :-)

that would be interesting to store/have if i should ever reinstall 7sp1 again. Just not getting it though. it says you gotta use IE6 or up, and it doesnt even trigger with IE11? I will just have to get the Torrent :-)
I would wonder how far into the "install windows 10 damnit" updates that is, when it is april'16 which was well into that nightmare.

8:33 AM
Hm. 2 month contract with possibility of extending. Better pay than last job. Eh. Not a total waste of time.

@Burgi Derp
> The Update Catalog is, in fact, a useful resource; as well as the patches, it also offers a place to download the device drivers that Windows Update distributes. But it's a resource that has been abandoned for a number of years. Microsoft says that later in the year it will be updating the Update Catalog to work in modern browsers; we can't help but feel it should make this change before forcing people to use the site, rather than after.

set stuff up that people like and use, then abandon it or parts of it :-( but the crappy malware loaded trash out there, Oh the links are still valid for it :-)
I have before and would again, pay for a properly assembled more complete package of the OS. so they could have stuck me for another unnessisary $100 for the disk, ok for the flash chip, ok for the complete download.
Going to win10 when I do and i will have to, i am not going to have a problem plunking down $100 for a proper and complete package for it. That is actually cheap compared to some "pro" class software that will run on it.
good GPU $300 and up
Pro Video programs $300 and up
A friend of mines job architechturally they pay ~80,000usd for thier CAD software that works corrrect.
OS drop in the bucket.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek are you going for it or did you already get it?

8:47 AM
@Bob will talk to them Monday to confirm.
So mostly sure?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek nice!

It wasn't even listed.

Bob
An early and hopefully not premature congrats? :P

I Hope!

good luck!

8:51 AM
If nothing else, gives me some breathing room.
Tho so weird that the offer was practically instant.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek do you know what the job involves yet?
a 2-month contract sounds like either they're currently lacking manpower for some big project, or a bit of a weird probation/trial run :P

Desktop support at a casino.

Bob
huh. interesting
@JourneymanGeek Are Aug & Sept particularly busy months? :P
ow. this answer makes me really uncomfortable
in a "this miiiiiight be spam" way
why does he bold "US DoD"?

August is national day. Smells like weird probation.
That said I got my last job in a similar fashion.

@Burgi the two here have some degree of government support/shackles

There were too many casinos in Atlantic City ... the market was oversaturated. So it was a case of economics ...
@Burgi

hmm, I don't know why I am so carefull/scared around my new projects, it's not like they all blow up.

is AGP still used anymore?

Just PCIe now?

in theory you can find pci video cards
but most of those are older models with bridges in em
What's your major malfunction actual issue?

Do you know off hand of any big brand graphics card that is PCI and win 10 compatible, so with DirectX 9 or later and WDDM 1.0 driver?

Nope, but that sounds like a great hardware recs question

11:38 AM
a friend has an old computer with just AGP and PCI and wants win 10 and the deadline for win 10 is like tonight or tomorrow night (or maybe has already been i'm not sure)

tbh, I don't bother with pre pcie machines any more
anything like that's on the wrong side of a decade old by now
hell, my old c2d has a pcie slot

@barlop he could probably pick up "newer" but not latest computers for less than bothing with something back so far as AGP and the big problem with the drivers.

@barlop Currently 22 hours left (see countdown at microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade)

they are selling usable but slow computers for like $80

11:43 AM
@barlop for that matter, I have core 2 duos with integrated graphics that does windows 10....

@barlop You definitely wouldn't want to mess with anything involving regular PCI. AGP is way faster than PCI. But even AGP is effectively obsolete.

Q: big brand PCI graphics card win 10 compatible?

barlopDo you know of any big brand graphics card that is PCI and win 10 compatible, so with DirectX 9 or later and WDDM 1.0 driver? It's for an old computer with an AGP 3.3v slot, and a PCI slot. I'm looking for a PCI card rather than an AGP 3.3v one, as I guess PCI is a bit less difficult to find. th...

Don't ask for a "PCI" graphics card when you really mean "AGP". They're two separate things.

@barlop include a budget and where you need it

That's like asking for a cup of coffee when you really mean tea.
And if the computer has both PCI and AGP, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to mess with PCI for a graphics card.

11:50 AM
well maybe i'll make another question for AGP 3.3v

@allquixotic 'modern' PCI cards would be easier to find than AGP IMO.

yeah that's why I asked re PCI

The last AGP card made by Nvidia was the 6800GT. IN 2005.

it's not a computer they use for gaming

Anything that old probably can't even do basic compositing.

11:51 AM
@barlop how much ram does it have?

not sure if 2GB or 4GB.. I guess if 2GB it can't take win 10?
if 4GB it'd be ok with it i suppose
It is running win 7 ok.

1gb is the minimum for 32 bit. 2 for 64

looks like that driver ships a WDDM 1.0 driver for the 6800GT

hm. Anything that runs 7 should run 10 no?

it doesn't matter that it doesn't say "Windows 10"

11:53 AM
yeah i see directx 9 with that link
so win 10 compatible driver.

so yeah, if you can find an AGP 8x 6800GT, you can probably use that with the 2015 WHQL Nvidia legacy driver (ugh) to get a WDDM 1.0 driver that'll work with Windows 10
but they haven't manufactured those since ten years ago

@allquixotic this machine as such is at least that old ;p

way overpriced compared to the value, but if this person simply cannot afford a new motherboard/CPU/RAM to upgrade to the modern era, I suppose it's acceptable
someone else got it working with the same generation GPU and the 309 drivers

it'll be cheaper just to buy a new machine

my problem would be you solve that problem, then you have other driver issues, like the Nic, any sound card/chip too

11:59 AM
you can get a basic box for about £200

amazon.com/s/… if the link works
there are enough cheap computers out there to get one to every starving child in africa, although i am sure food or seed would be better :-)

@allquixotic I've got one of those cards D:

no idea if it works anymore tho :/

boo, THE IMAGE LIES

12:07 PM
@Psycogeek eh, AC'97 sound should still be supported just fine on Win10
and you can forcibly load network drivers written for an older NDIS specification on the latest version of Windows; it won't like it, but it'll allow it
you just have to break open the sometimes obnoxious packaging and wrapping and installer crap, to extract the .inf / .sys files

realtek wasnt even a company back in agp times :-)
how about a soundblaster, which drivers were so stock for it they even had linux ones :-)

heh, the driver situation is much worse on the ATI/AMD side than Nvidia when it comes to supporting their AGP cards into the new WDDM regime
there's a Vista driver for the X800 Series (last AGP cards from ATI) that might support WDDM 1.0 (or it might use the legacy XP driver model that was still supported on Vista IIRC) that you might be able to force-load on Windows 10
the driver was released in 2010
compared to Nvidia, which still supported their last AGP cards up until 2015

@Dave Hehe. You can still flag the comment as offensive (I did) :p

USS Inaugural (AM-242) was an Admirable-class fleet minesweeper. The Admirable class was the largest and one of the most successful classes of U.S. minesweepers ordered during World War II. Inaugural was launched on 1 October 1944 and commissioned less than three months later. After seeing combat in the Pacific Theater, she was decommissioned in 1946 and spent two decades in mothballs. In 1968, she was set up as a museum ship in St. Louis, Missouri. In the flood of 1993, Inaugural was ripped from her mooring and grounded a mile downstream. As of December 2014, the hulk was still sitting on the...
I love the US government's approach to dealing with old ships.

@allquixotic they sink em?

This thing sunk in 1993 in the Mississippi River during a flood.

Just to add, shortly, you guys are not going to have me sitting in here all the time so, I'd definitely suggest getting into the habit of flagging over me pinging. (Unless SE decides to hire me as a CM, which hasn't happened yet)
