@Boris_yo Go big or go home :-) how large is the ball in the Orbit? While aready there are people would would never like a trackball, and so you can only test and see if it works for you. If the ball in the top of this particualr design i am using was smaller i would not like it. I measure it at 2" . In this design i am soewhat "palming" the whole thing with 2-3 finger resting on top of it
With much contact with the human hand , like a mouse is all hand grabbed, that is completly different from rolling with a finger , like a good index finger, or thumb rolling which to me does not feel like there is precision control.
with a large body contact area (and me being generally jittery to begin with) tweaking it with a single finger it is all over the place. Rolling with a thumb was not as bad at all, but you have to think about how far you can roll then, before your "picking up the mouse" again repositioning the thumb to roll more.

12:33 AM
There were 3 things I changed on the expert almost immediataly too, as i had always hacked up even regular mices to get the feel i wanted. "However, the trackball housing itself is constructed on a very steep incline." the angle is terrible, i use a shim to prop up the side close to me.
The scroll wheel, in an awkward position around the ball which i though was better than rotating the ball itself (Slim) which induces curser movment. I dissasembled it immediatly and silicon lubricated the whole of that, for 2X better movement.
A vast improved design would have actual ball bearings supporting the ball , even though that would require more cleaning. Instead they use tiny ruby balls that the ball rides on. Putting in a Tackpad scrolling on the left and right, so a sweep of the thumb or pinkey does scroll

12:55 AM
Trackpad type scolling (only thing i loved about trackpads) was put into a apple "magic mouse" or some name, I was temped to try one of these new finger sencing apple mouses until many many people on an apple were not to thrilled with it.
a quote from magic mouse amazon comment that rates it low "The scrolling action on it just rules. I keep using it just for that."

I suppose someone will figure this out before i try it, but i too would like to Hop between the 2 (using seperate disk and hardware boot menu) Until the one is settled and filled with programs, and customised, and assuredly works without any fails. I guess flat out buying it would solve that.

Ah cool
What do you have in mind for email?
Zimbra?

Bob
@bertieb Was actually thinking of just using postfix
But pretty uncertain.
Might just go with an externally hosted solution.
Email is messy
DNS is marginally less so, because I can get OVH to act as a secondary. Too bad Namecheap doesn't support zone transfers.

> Email is messy

And how
Oh formatting, you messy thing

Bob
@bertieb Ha, Ghetto Chat Markdown (TM) :P

12:19 PM
Heh :P

I've gotten Zimbra up and running in the past, but it was... messy

Bob
@bertieb Then there's stuff like spam filters, blacklists... ow
Hosted might be the way to go.
Currently using gmail, but I don't really want to depend on a domain I don't control

@Bob Should be another SE meme entry
@Bob Zimbra is pretty feature-complete (not compared to GApps) in terms of those things
But tricky
I was lucky to get the free version of Apps for Domain before they stopped that

Bob
@bertieb By blacklists I mean external blacklists. As in, it's far too easy to get an email server blacklisted.
@bertieb ...actually, I have that o.O

12:22 PM
@Bob Ah, true

Bob
Not on the domain I want to use though.

@Bob "Send As"?
Hardly ideal, admittedly

Bob
@bertieb Dunno about GApps, but in Gmail it leaks your real address.

@Bob Ah, fair enough :-/

Bob
@bertieb I can see why they do it.
It's just bad for me if all my messages render as "bob@example.com via bob@internalsecretthingo.example.org"

12:25 PM
@Bob Yup, for sure
There seem to be a few things billing themselves as an "open source" alternative to Gmail
Still, the hassle

I've used Yahoo Mail for close to a decade, if not longer, with pretty much no issues as all.

@bertieb If we had a memes page on meta about RA, roughly half the entries would be about me.

Have thought about self-hosting but I'll need another SSL cert and it would add a lot to server maintenance

@bertieb: Zimbra's ok for groupware, but its finicky as shit.
I'd rather go with something simple like roundcube

@JourneymanGeek Heh :P
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, it's overkill for a single person

Bob
12:29 PM
@bertieb I don't use the web interface (much) anyway
Mostly Thunderbird + IMAP

@bertieb: so's an email server anyway ;p

@JourneymanGeek Touche :P

Bob
@DragonLord It's just risky.
What if service X does something you dislike?
So much is tied to my email identity now.

12:41 PM
superuser.com/questions/949349/… perfect example of why there should be a SEcomputer hardware, or why VTC is a whole lot easier. Indeed I am having a bit of fun with it, but on the other hand, thick as a brick :-)

The Electronics site he also exists on, has no such problem. Q) Lookie what i just bought. A) hey buy this too, to go with it .

12:59 PM
Interesting one for you guys.. so my ISP is using some sort of content injection thats killing my page loading frequently, and ending up timing out until I refresh. Its the same address its going to every time. Any way to just take that address and have it bypass it? Can I just set it to 0.0.0.0 in the hosts file?

@SimonSheehan If the ISP notices you're null-routing the injected content, they could terminate service.
I know it's not right for them to do that, but still...

@DragonLord very annoying... The actual content they are injecting is just a warning that ive used 75% of my bandwidth for the month, which used to be no problem because it would appear and you could dismiss it, but now it's broken and doesnt load.

@SimonSheehan Can't they use an email notice instead?
Very bizarre way to go about this.

@DragonLord They never have. It's Rogers, probably the most idiotic ISP to ever exist.
But it's the better one out here

Anyone know anything about intermittent battery detection issues with Dell Inspirons?
BIOS claims battery function is normal, but apparently Windows will sometimes complain about it not being present

1:04 PM
Most IsPs would. Start charging Huge overage fees when you step over the Cap. Slow your connection down to a crawl, or clip you off cold till the end of the billing cycle.

@Psycogeek overage feees are here, yep.

Up to CA$4 per GB from what I've read.

I dont go over, it just warns me at the 75% mark which still means ive got 50GB to go

He's probably using a faster service where the overage fees are lower, but it's still significant.
At least here in New York, we don't have overage fees from any of the major wireline ISPs.
Not FiOS, not Time Warner Cable, not Optimum, not MCI.
Only if you genuinely abuse the service (multiple tens of terabytes per month) do you risk getting in trouble.

I think a lot of bad press and really ticked off even switching carriers people toned down the onslaught of that stuff.

1:11 PM
@DragonLord this is accurate. let me check the numbers for you..

@SimonSheehan Where does the warning appear? Browser , single webpage replacing the one you were trying to see? Browser Splattered on web pages your trying to view? Seperate programs installed with the ISP package with notification?

@DragonLord 1.25/gb
@Psycogeek Browser, puts the actual web page in a seperate webframe usually when it does work

View source, adblock, but when it is also failing , thats not gonna work.

Figuratively it should have stopped by now since the cap has reset now, but apparently they are delayed by up to two days

Does it occur on all pages or is it sparcly interjected? So you could test wack-a-Moleing it

1:20 PM
@Psycogeek Its sporadic and random, can't pinpoint a specific time. Every couple of minutes it dings me
Its the same address each time

Intejecting a single JS into a webpage , would allow them to do that?

Bob
ok, terraria server is broken (tshock latest release is buggy)

@Psycogeek Seems so. Its ridiculous.

superuser.com/questions/949349/… Thick as a Brick reloaded. The user finnaly proved that any VTC that occured is well deserved now
@SimonSheehan I was asking , I do not do javascript, but lots of people here understand it. What i have done before is view the source of a web page, and tried to understand 2% of it enough to seek and destroy things on the web page that were just wrong.

@Psycogeek ahhh i see what you mean now

1:32 PM
You try and find the thing in the mess, then add it to the addblock,
Problem nowdays is i spend the first 30 minutes shutting down 10 Trackers, and 7 analiser/stats things, then on to the 10 fraudulent advertising.
By the time i get done there is 1 picture and some text :-) which would also exist if ALL scripting (and active-x) was off.

Yeah. If the page ever loads I'll have to do that

In Windows 10, the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file no longer contains an actual log. Instead, the following is contained in the file:
> Windows Update logs are now generated using ETW (Event Tracing for Windows).
Please run the Get-WindowsUpdateLog PowerShell command to convert ETW traces into a readable WindowsUpdate.log.

For more information, please visit http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=518345

Since when was a hypervisor not considered a virtual machine?

When a hypervior runs 2 virtual machines? is this a trick question, cause i don't know

5:30 PM
there is a question
asking how to run a hypervisor and a virtual machine on the same machine
0
Q: Running a Virtual Machine and Hypervisor on the same machine

user148095I've got a desktop and a laptop computer. Both run Intel hardware. I mainly do word processing, programming, watching videos and surfing the Internet (I don't play computer games). I would like to create a portable Ubuntu installation that I can run both on the desktop and the laptop by installin...

Wiki says hypervisor is the Virtual Machine Monitor , the control and manage and interfacing aspect of the virtual machine. I have lamely always thought Supervisor hypervisor , which seems to fit in the use on the web.

There are two types
a bare-metal Type 1 and type 2 which is like VBox
But in the general sense a hypervisor is a virtual machine
in both cases the virtual hardware is powered by software, even type-1

Hiya!

yea because the wikis explaination of a virtual machine is similar leaning towards the functions it serves

Honey, I'm home!

5:37 PM
( not looking for agreement ) I know I am right trying to understand the comment by TD

@Ramhound some people percieve the virtual machine to be the instances of the operating system . the virtual computer that is there.

Well they are wrong.....

Hello, everyone.. I need some help about a Vodafone Internet policy/mechanic that I find kind of fishy
Basically, my "plug in the internet stick" USB device comes with a program that lets it provide a connection for me. This connection is rather weakish, but decent. However, it's limited to X amount per month. Once that amount runs out, the fishy business happens. I can then only go on "whitelisted" websites like Facebook or Google Search, but on almost nothing else. When I try to go on whateverwebsite.whatever.com, I get redirected to the Vodafone "OH, YOU WANT MORE?" page, which is a dead-end.

@DragonLord You don't know the half of it.

Out of how many over the last 10 or so hours?
@Mokubai ?

Too many. Windows 10 seems to have been a catalyst for everyone to come out of the woodwork only to scream "Me too!"
Today has been a relatively quiet day in all honesty.

I also had to protect six questions in the last eight or so hours.
As if the mods haven't had enough work to do...

9:00 PM
So about my thing.. I can't really get rid of it, right?
More importantly, if I found a way to, could I get in trouble?

Must be a faulty configuration.
I'm starting over.

10:01 PM
Morning all!

@MichaelFrank Good evening

@AlexMitan This is zero rated data.

@MichaelFrank hmm?

The fact that you can still access certain sites while connected to your Vodafone stick without having any remaining prepaid data points to a zero rated data plan.
i.e they don't charge you for accessing those websites while using their network.
It's also completely up to them as far as which websites you are allowed to access or not. This is a major talking point in the net neutrality issue around the world.
@AlexMitan To answer your last question; Yes - it is something you can stop. You have two options: Pay for more bandwidth, or completely stop using the service.

10:34 PM
@MichaelFrank maybe a VPN? but then he wouldn't get free anything

@PatoSáinz If he's using a mobile broadband stick, there's not really any way around it. A VPN isn't going to help as he won't have any available data to create the required connection.

Anonymous
@MichaelFrank he'd be able to encrypt everything that goes through the mobile data connection

Anonymous
so his carrier wouldn't know what he's visiting

Anonymous
of course he'll still be charged for his data usage

@PatoSáinz Right, but he specifically stated that once he's out of data, they still let him use certain websites. Which is what he's asking about bypassing. ;)

and I just set up code.kryo.se/iodine in my server, IP-over-DNS

so I can bypass captive portals

@allquixotic We used to use Google Translate to proxy stuff at school... I guess that would work if they allow access to Google sites.
@PatoSáinz That's really awesome.

11:07 PM
@AlexMitan At this point, I'd find a friend with a decent, unlimited connection, and play with ssh tunneling ;p

11:20 PM
@JourneymanGeek Would that work on a prepaid connection that doesn't have any available data left?

No idea. SCIENCE!

I would have thought the ISP would look at the traffic and say "This isn't approved data, get outta here!"
That's how I'd do it.
I feel like I'm trolling this guy...

Q: Excel show list based on cell value

Excel-LoverBasically, I wanna do something like this : =IF(B1="APPLES","Show First List",IF(B1="ORANGES","Show Second List")) But I'm not sure how to make a proper formula.

@MichaelFrank Lol, maybe a little :P

@bertieb Heh...
Also, this guy has his C: set as his Google Drive!

Q: Why can't Windows 7 search FIND ANYTHING in my User Home folder or most other places?

DSlomer64Here's my Search setup in Windows 7: Here's the folder I want Windows to search: Here's me telling it to search (what it searches for is immaterial. It NEVER finds ANYTHING: It should have found at least the NetBeansProjects folder, but NOOOOOOOOO. Another search, should have found seve...

@MichaelFrank and I'm sure Google has it in good hands

11:26 PM
I don't see a Windows directory there though, perhaps he installed the OS on a different partition
Though in another screenshot C: does have the Windows flag on it

@BenN Ya, it's a bit of a mess.

Is C: definitely Google Drive'd? And not just the user directory (with a label of 'C:') ?

@bertieb Some ad related profiling system is having a field day with all that juicy data.

<-- has no idea how GDrive for Desktops works

"Your non canine search assistant" ._.

11:28 PM
@MichaelFrank "Wow, this guy really likes DLLs!"

@bertieb You might be right there. Maybe it's just saying "This GDrive folder in on C:, FYI."

Maybe he renamed it "C:" to troll us. One other screenshot shows "L: (V:)" which is a bit weird
Ohhh yeah that's probably what it indicates
(I've never used Google Drive either) Makes sense to show what drive it's on, I guess

@BenN Oh gods I missed that L: V: one
Hmm, I think I'm going to give my Windows partition the label "/"
and my root partition the label "WINDOWS"

That's pretty obvious. :V = definite troll emoticon.

Just to really confuse my future self come next install

11:31 PM
Why not reassigned C: to A: and confuse any legacy software you try and install. :)

PROFILEDATA (ntfs) -> /home
@MichaelFrank Ha!

Windows 10 seems to get confused with non-C OS drives too. I tried to run the installer in a Windows PE environment (where the hard drive is always X) and it died when trying to extract stuff

STORAGE --> smb://4.2.2.1/public/
Agh, Ghetto Chat Markdown™ strikes again!

Episode II: Revenge of Escape Characters

@BenN My favourite was from the OT; V: Blockquote Strikes Back

Not sure if trolling or is serious. — Excel-Lover 26 secs ago

...neither am I, to be honest

Are there - seemingly - so many questions about Kali because it's used for certain courses? [compsci? netsec?]

@bertieb Pretty much.
I think Udemy have a few courses that use it.

Googles
Ahh

The netsec class I took a few months ago used Kali. Maybe novice would-be hackers searched for "hacking programs" and found it :P
How common are questions on it? I've only seen one, something about network adapters

11:51 PM
Fair enough! Just seems like an... odd choice for newbies to Linux

It seems to be broken in several ways; I can't get it to display in more than 1024x768. Maybe people are complaining about that

The questions are pretty wide-ranging
Okay kodi; you're sitting with a movie paused and the screen off; why are you using ~320% cpu ?

@bertieb Heh... I'm having some interesting problems with Kodi as well.

I don't even have any libraries or anything it should be indexing!

11:54 PM
@bertieb: skiddies use it cause its a 'hacker's os

Occasionally when I swap to the HDMI channel my HTPC is running on the Kodi window will be super zoomed in until I go to windowed mode and back.

plods downstairs to stop playback instead of pausing

A 'real' security professional would probably start off with a modern, updated OS, and build their own toolkit
BOOOOO
@bertieb you really should have some kinda remote access installed ;p

@JourneymanGeek Ah, of course! Explains the HALP IT BROKED MY WINDOWS I CANT BOOT type questions

@JourneymanGeek Kore for Kodi!

11:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek Shhhhhh
Later.... later

(I'm pondering moving my linux box to another room since I can pretty efficiently connect to it wirelessly now)

@MichaelFrank Oh, that's right I have Yatse
on my phone and tablet
which are... downstairs
derp

I have nomachine on my media download box ;p

Web interface! Which isn't running Chorus, for some reason
@JourneymanGeek Cheap at twice the price :P

@bertieb: we use the professional version extensively at work
I wouldn't call it cheap ;p

11:59 PM
Indeed :P
