Why did I never buy an OTG cable earlier? This thing is amazing!

1:05 AM
Good question :p

4 hours later…
5:04 AM
Ah, the fun being logged into a mud:

Bob
7:58 AM
ow
this weather
> A tree on the tracks between Killara and Turramurra has disrupted the train service between Chatswood and Hornsby.
> Over 4,500 reports of hazards, wires down across network after #sydneystorm, #nswweather. Power cut to 200,000, repairs to take several days
Trees falling everywhere, flash flooding... urk.
Least I live outside of the worst of it.

Oh yeah. Ash is 10 today ;p

@JourneymanGeek Weee :D
I bought myself a cross-cut paper shredder this weekend. It is fucking awesome
I'll probably shred a couple of folders tonight

Bob
12:35 PM
Awesome until something jams and then you smell burning enamel. Yes, I speak from experience.

12:51 PM
I couldn't care less about cars, fountain pens and paper shredders.
You guys are such nerds. I bet you are into computers too. Weirdos.

@Bob I've already owned a shredder for ages and have had quite a few nasty little mishaps during my shredding escapades
But the old one is loud and only makes spaghetti. This one makes proper confetti and is much more silent
So you can shred all night long without disturbing the neighbors
That's what she said

1:08 PM
Blah, the only way to get MS to read my emails is if I send them at 9am PDT

Is there a way that I can undo saving a file on Chrome OS? it isn't being saved to google drive.
The fule contain lots of important classwork
*file

1:28 PM
Not all USB drives are portable.

1:49 PM
hello

any of you guys know about hardware? I dont know if should make a question

!! tell alenjandra meta

@HackToHell Please don't ask to ask; if you simply ask your actual question, we will help you if we know the answer or can help you find it. This is much faster and simpler than asking if it's OK to ask. As a rule, it is always OK to ask in this channel. Please go ahead.

i guess i should add a new question then lol

1:53 PM
yep

@AlejandraMoreno quite a lot of us do ;p

@Hennes That's beautiful ;p

Just to be sure, dont want do newbie stuff again.

lol
I do that every 5 years or so when I build a new box ;)

2:07 PM
is screw-lifter valid?

Bob
@AlejandraMoreno Oh, nothing wrong with asking in here.

i dont know what name have in english

What's the name in spanish?

"levantador"

er
is this a thing to lift up a server?

2:09 PM
basically it's a screw you put under the motherboard to avoid contact with the metal

OH
Standoffs!

Bob
The name escapes me too :P
Oh yea, that was it.

yeah that little boy lol

lol
I remembered they were brass ;p
so I googled motherboard, brass, and let autocomplete do the rest ;p
@AlejandraMoreno most native speakers don't know what they are called either ;p

@JourneymanGeek I certainly didn't. Standoffs huh? Nice.

2:12 PM
lol

ok probably google translate mess the text but...

Now we have to find a Mexican company that makes them!
A Mexican standoff is a confrontation between two or more parties in which none of the parties can neither proceed nor retreat without exposing themselves to danger. As a result, all participants need to maintain the strategic tension, which remains unresolved until some outside event makes it possible to resolve it. Mexican standoffs need not have only two participants. Some elements of a truel, a confrontation among three opponents armed with guns, show both the Mexican-standoff property and a method of resolving it by the actions of a third party. The tactics for such a confrontation are...

ah hah!
American standoffs. mexican standoffs. ALL MADE IN Taiwan CHINA!

lol
Hostia, se dice "levantador" en castellano? En serio?
Suena un poco... rarito.

2:14 PM
lol

Es mejor que "tornillo ambar"
lol

Ouch :)

a screwlift is a device that is used to lift things ;p

@JourneymanGeek But, but!
Including screws I hope.

the bad thing, i need to build again the pc
T_t

2:15 PM
lol

And yes, I did avoid the more obvious jokes there.

@AlejandraMoreno: That's fun!

Did you forget the standoffs?

it's not when it's not working!

Well, usually your case comes with them
Actually some times that's fun too.
or you can buy them from amazon

2:16 PM
Man, I remember the first machine I built, I was so proud when it worked for a few days and then it suddenly went poof. I'd put one of the standoffs where it came in contact with one of the MB's chips. :(

or electrical component shops that also have taller ones ;p

why tag "hardware" its not allowed?
:(((

lol
@AlejandraMoreno: meta tag
but this sort of thing, just ask in chat.
We don't bite.

they dont want to
:(

@terdon: I managed to bend a pin on my last build
ended up needing a new motherboard ;p
(which thankfully, asus replaced for me)

2:18 PM
Ah, I had to unbend some on my last build. I'd taken the machine apart because I was changing countries and it got damaged in transport. I was quite surprised it worked but it's fine.

those standoffs are necessary nowdays?

lol
@AlejandraMoreno: some cases have things that do the same thing built in
or already in the case
check your manual
what case?

i bought a new box(i hope is called that)

case ;p

but has like..."brigdes"

2:19 PM
(and don't call it a cabinet. It makes me a sad panda)

bridges*
it's the commander ms-1

not too bad ;p

the problem is i put the standoffs on it but the motherboard is not aligned with the conection block

ahh
too high?

like on finger

2:22 PM
I THINK that board may be standoff free
try dry fitting it without them?

im bit scared
should i ? i dont want to breake anything

lol
hence dry fitting
No screws, no power

no i mean

just see if everything goes into place alright
I know some cases work without standoffs

if i install the motherboard without the standoff
can cause electric problems
i think so..

2:24 PM
nope
dosen't make sense, your brass standoffs are also conductive
and ground the motherboard to the case

so why is standoffs for?

on older/cheaper cases, its easier to just punch everything in place, tap it slightly and use standoffs

i guess i should try :P

ahh ok
the bridges do the same thing as standoffs I think
Yeah ;p

so why the standoff are for?
i thought those was coz they are not conductive lol

2:27 PM
on old style cases, they'd just punch a flat sheet of metal and add the standoffs to get to the correct height ;p
lol
brass is VERY conductive
The UK power plugs use those for pins ;p

yeah my old box is a flat steel(very heavy)
lot of holes

I have a literal beige box ;p
with the vent on the side of the case for a PIV exaust thing ;p

I think I'm starting on my next gen stuff soon ;p

Blah I want a new phone :'(
My old one is slowing down

2:32 PM
lol
@HackToHell one pluses are available globally allegedly ;p
ALMOST tempted

Damn it's going to be 2 years since I got it o_0
@JourneymanGeek It's 20k :O

corsair is nice, several did recommend me to me

@HackToHell: oh, its always been available in india
@AlejandraMoreno: I have trouble with small cases ;p

2:34 PM
my old box is so heavy now my arms hurts lol

anyway Journey thanks! Noboy answered my question :(

lol

Always glad to help, especially when it comes to hardware

2:35 PM
that's better than a negatives haha
ahhh now dont want to work on the box
lazyness

lol
but if you can put it together, you can play games on it!
Or whatever else you want to use it for ;p

vmware
windows 10 > windows 8 > windows 7 > windows vista > windows xp

in one machine!
lol
jk

@AlejandraMoreno superuser.com/questions/904186/… someone else with the same issue ._.
ahh, I run VMs on my little toy computer ;p

2:39 PM
seems im not the only dumb in this world
lol

and the same case
and yeah, definately dump the standoffs

Why do humans need sleep :(
I hate feeling like a zombie

caffeine

(I run fedora 21 + KVM, then ubuntu on it)

2:41 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy: dogs just sleep whenever ;p

I see your dog and raise you a cat

awww how old is s/he?

He's probably dreaming about a new server ;p

or standoffs

2:43 PM
lol
10 today
and definately a boy dog.

well im gonna try to build the pc at last..

10 in dog years is how much in humanese?

no standoff
77?

40 ?

We need a dog / human time converter! Who cares about celsius and faren fharin Führer american

2:46 PM
He's old o0

;p
lol yeah
I'd guess he has another good 5-8 years ;p

Small dogs tend to live longer though. You can't translate to "human years" without taking the dog's weight into account.

Bob
LOL

3:38 PM
@Bob ^^ That's what TSMC gets for dragging its feet for 4 years.
Their excuse was always "Oh, we're trying to get good ROI on our 28nm process". Well now you've lost a customer. Idiots.... ugh
I hope AMD and Nvidia work out deals with other fabs and leave TSMC too

Bob
@allquixotic I'm now wondering who will hit 10nm first.
Intel expects it to happen in two years.
Samsung is a contender.

GPUs have stagnated ever since the release of the Radeon HD7900 series because of TSMC deliberately delaying innovation to make money.
I think Intel will get 10nm first as usual, but Samsung's progress is damn impressive
January 9, 2012. That is when the first 28nm commercially-available discrete GPU was placed on the market for sale. The HD7970.
It's April 21, 2015 and we still haven't seen a sub-28nm discrete part on the market. The GTX980 is 28nm. The Radeon R9 390X is hypothesized to maybe be TSMC 20nm, but that's second half 2015 release at the earliest.
Pretty close to 4 years.

Bob
> Pat Gelsinger, at the time serving as Intel's Chief Technology Officer, claimed in 2008 that Intel sees a 'clear way' towards the 10 nm node. At the 11 nm node in 2015, Intel expects to use a half-pitch of around 21 nm.
A bit off, but not bad
> Nvidia's chief scientist, William Dally, claims that they will also reach 11 nm semiconductors by 2015
heh...

yeah, no. Unless Nvidia has a fab now, or is going to buy time on Intel or Samsung's fabs...
I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia's next card is 20nm, since they landed Maxwell earlier this year at 28nm and TSMC is finally ramping up the 20nm node, buuuut.... for a new product launch I would expect them not to deliver the actual product until at least 8-10 months have passed from the Maxwell launch...

Bob
@allquixotic They were expecting Pascal in 2016

3:54 PM
my next desktop upgrade will probably be one or two R9 390X; two Samsung 850 Pro SSDs @ 1 TB in hardware RAID-0 with a current-gen entry-level Adaptec RAID controller; a Skylake-mainstream i7 (ideally with unlocked multiplier and maximum platform PCIe lanes); an ASUS or ASRock $110 middle of the road motherboard; 32 or 64 GB of DDR4; and my existing 4 x 4 TB 7200rpm HDDs for large storage of videos and games.
super expensive but I dumped a bunch of monthly recurring expenses so it should be possible by early 2016
oh and Windows 10 ;p

Bob
My laptop has 16 GB of RAM and even with a bunch of VMs running I rarely cross 50%...
64 is serious overkill :P

serious overkill == seriously low amounts of reading from the relatively snail-paced disk subsystem (even with SSDs, DDR4 will absolutely smoke it)
start-up next generation 64-bit game --> game loads stuff into RAM --> storage only touched to occasionally save persistent data
I think we're going to see a lot smarter (and resource-hungrier) AI in upcoming strategy and simulation games, since the next platform jump should enable much higher throughput from the CPU to RAM and back
I like when the AI is challenging, or even when you can give a helping AI directives to manage your own stuff in an automated manner
flight envelope-aware autopilot in KSP during atmospheric flight :O

4:16 PM
hello

4:45 PM
Everyone in my year has got their msdn subscription :/
Except me of course

5:01 PM
So much fun :D

That looks to be quite an upgrade.

5:20 PM
It's so much fun :D
I should put googly eyes on it
Now I'm out of things to shred :(

user146722
Even the included manual and other example shredding material?

Manual!
Sweet. It's stapled
And now it's confetti

user146722

Q: Why is the 0 next to 9, not next to 1?

gerritOn almost all keyboard layouts I have ever seen, the 0 is to the right of the 9, rather than to the left of the 1 (the original Dvorak layout is the only exception I can think of; it has 0 between 9 and 2): 1234567890 Why is the 0 to the right of 9 rather than to the left of 1 — the latter seem...

Heh, sweet. Could have been on Super User just as well :D

5:43 PM
I like the 'influential keyboards part' :)

PS: Typed on a model M

@OliverSalzburg lol, that was me when I got my new shredder from Amazon Basics

@allquixotic Ah, I had that one on my list as well
Seems like there is actually quite a lot of Amazon Basics that's very decent
Like that shredder

yeah, I have some of their HDMI cables too
in RA chat terms, it's Amazon !!okay
because their stuff is cheap, gets there fast, and is okay quality
suffices but not amazing

5:58 PM
We recently got some USB extension cables which were pretty awesome as well. Especially since they have plastic covering the whole slot
Very robust. Perfect for use at the fair

6:17 PM
> While Samsung has not confirmed any of its alleged details, the Galaxy Note 5, expected to arrive in September, continues to brew speculations in the rumor mills. For one, the device is thought to sport the first 4K display in a smartphone, but there are also talks which peg the inclusion of other notable features.
> 4K
!!no

Bob
@allquixotic You had a Yoga 2?
...I've probably asked this a dozen times by now
Nov 11 '14 at 14:10, by allquixotic
the IdeaPad Yoga 2 (not pro) is what I have
k
apparently my current display (SDC424A) is the same as the one in the Yoga 2 Pro
3200x1800 PenTile display
I find the diagonal pattern very distracting :(
Gotta remember to avoid PenTile
For some reason, the pattern isn't as obvious on my phone. Probably the slightly higher density.

btw @Bob, I'm trying to switch to middle finger mouse scrolling. Very nice

Bob
6:32 PM
@OliverSalzburg You were using left before?

Left? I thought it's called the index finger. Unless I'm misunderstanding :D
Basically, I was only using 2 fingers to mouse, now I'm using 3

Bob
> Most PenTile displays use rectangular grids of alternating green and blue/red pixels. However the Samsung Galaxy S4 uses a PenTile Diamond Pixel array, where the green pixels are oval and repeat in a single line, while red and blue pixels are larger and alternate between the lines of green, ensuring more uniform colours with fewer aberrations compared to the earlier generation PenTile display on the Galaxy S III.
Hm, that and apparently LCDs use RGBW vs RGBG on phones... that might be why the pattern is more distinctive.
@OliverSalzburg Yea, index.
@OliverSalzburg How's the vertical mouse going?

@Bob It's nice, but I don't use it as much as the G602

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Have you found a use for all the buttons yet? :P

Mostly because M4 and M5 stopped working after I installed the Logitech mouse tool

Bob
6:40 PM
I've just assigned one to my ingame PTT, so at least voice chat is easier now...
@OliverSalzburg o.O

@Bob Not yet
I use M4 and M5 a lot for browser navigation
Having them not work is just a major annoyance. And I didn't look into the cause yet

Bob
I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with those two buttons.
When I got my first mouse with extra buttons (some Dell one), I kept accidentally nudging them. They were extremely sensitive.
So I'd be doing something on one page, filling in a form maybe, then bump and there goes all my progress.
Ended up disabling those buttons.

Urgh
Yeah, that sucks

Bob
Then rediscovered them on a wireless mouse on my laptop a few years later - that made browsing in bed much easier :P
Then forgot about them entirely at some point... probably a bit before I got the G602.
Now it has so many buttons I can't even remember which does what.

Back when 3 button mice were more common, I used click gestures in a Firefox extension for navigation. Those were really great. I actually was like "Chrome sucks, it doesn't have an extension that enables click gestures!"

Bob
6:44 PM
bottom-forwardmost of the thumb buttons is my PTT. The rest? Not a clue.

@Bob PTT?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Push To Talk

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I still don't understand gestures :(
they feel so finicky
And yes I am saying that while using Swype to type

I could experiment with hotkeys in the IDE for those extra buttons. Like M6+R = Refactor

Bob
6:45 PM
ooh
that'd be awesome
the Logitech software has app-specific button assignments too
I need to do that!

@Bob Those were click gestures though. Hold right + click left = Back, Hold left + click right = Forward. That was neat
The stuff you read on the news sometimes...
Apparently some parents are upset because there is a boulder at a playground that looks like a penis

Bob
...
Some people are just far too sensitive.
Also says something about their thought patterns if that's what they see.

I just love it. Imagine the kids having a great time, you're taking a picture and show it to some relatives later on...

Bob
Rorschach Test anyone? :P

6 hours ago, by Deep
Is there a way that I can undo saving a file on Chrome OS? it isn't being saved to google drive.

6:59 PM
@Deep Can't you just delete it from the Files app?
I've never actually used Chrome OS

I need a way to roll it back
I overwrote it by accident
Its got all my class notes since like november on it.

@Deep Go into Google Drive (maybe on the web), find our file and right-click it
There should be "Manage versions..." That might allow you to roll back

Oh, sorry, I forgot to say, It's on the internal SSD, not on google drive, which is why I was here.

Bob
And another one learns the value of backups.
I wonder if you might have to perform a lower-level recovery. No idea how COS works.

I had it on google drive last week, and I moved off from it as the WiFi in school was too unreliable.
Would simply copying someone else's notes be easier than trying to recover them?

7:10 PM
@Deep If it was in Drive, check the Trash

Its not in there.

Bob
@Deep Did you have it synced on another computer?
Huh. Apparently the weather over the last two days counts as a category 2 cyclone O_O

No. That'd be smart.

Recover from SSD? Good luck, that is quite non-trivial.
OR as it sometimes is mentioned 'that is left as an exercise for the reader'.

Alright, copying notes it is. Thanks guys!

Bob
7:53 PM
@allquixotic this is what I could get for 170 USD: cloudshards.com/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0 (with the 16 GB RAM, extra 1 TB HDD options)
Hmmm
On one hand... a local server :D
On the other... it costs more than your OVH, and is considerably worse :(

per month? jesus
move to the civilized world already :/

Bob
@allquixotic :(
the same (or better) hardware specs from OVH is 30 EUR/month
ow
@allquixotic Alternatively, 55 USD for a year of an OVZ VPS: cloudshards.com/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=2
hm
or half that for the 256MB/1CPU one
might be decent for a VPN
certainly lower latency
Hm. The dedi CPU would be an upgrade over my existing one, at least, though with lower memory. Then again, I could also save a bit by going OVH, sooo... -_-
need to find the time to set these things up too
