Tagged Windows-8 Where is the start menu they talk about in this tutorial?
geez how am i supposed to open a program :-)

My Wi_Fi keeps freezing up, any suggestions on how to fix it?
No i mean really freezing up

"but the problem is whenever i am mapping anythng in that it just went off xt day when i come and open outlook again"
...say what?

xt = next ?
"I set it, I exited outlook, I went back in the next day, and it was not set any more"
Whatever "it" is.

@Paul ...ahhh yea. I can see next from that.
It's odd having to support India staff. Normally it's the other way around.
They were having an issue with their citrix profile not keeping any Outlook archives that they set.

Not something to watch if you're nervous about flying? ;p

err I dont think that will help ...

rofl. No.

Just had to add this to my privacy policy regarding emails:
> Note that I may publish feedback and suggestions from emails that are reasonably believed to be intended for publication, but only if this information is not personally identifiable.
This is to address an unexpected issue regarding users who send me information with an intention to contribute to my content, which came up while updating my calculator benchmark article.
Thoughts?

@DragonLord looks good there having a simple privacy policy that is understandable. If someone e-mails you content , i would just assume at that point YOU know it, so then you could present it as you please. they were not giving you personal private information. But giving credit where credit is due, and increasing viewership "I told him about that" it is always good to credit the person. Blowing that anominty.

> Note that I may publish information from emails that is reasonably believed to be intended for publication (such as site content suggestions and feedback), but only if this information is not personally identifiable.

So that adds , writing back to the person, which again includes them and adds viewership, and asking "I would like to publish that and credit you, is that ok" and of course it is, and they are gratefull you cared, read what they said, and would credit them.

@Psycogeek I ran into this issue as well. I tried to make it clear that the added information is a reader contribution (and I say "thanks!" for it), but won't publish names unless permission is granted.

5:09 AM
Any of the bigger sites who have ever asked to publish one of the noisey piles of crap i wrote, have asked in a PM, or in e-mail first. Of course all i ever said was, sure if you can clean it up and spell it right :-)

5:21 AM
It was something that dawned upon me when I was updating the article.
As much as I hate making changes like these, this one was necessary.
The key is "reasonably believed to be intended for publication".

Q: Is there an alternative to Windows Server since it is being discontinued?

BigHomieSince Microsoft is discontinuing Windows server, is there a viable alternative for running Windows services? EOL for 2012 R2 isn't until Dec. 2020, but I still need to be ready. So far for my environment, I know that: We have 37 2012 R2 Servers 15 3rd Party Services That run on Windows Server ...

hehe

the answers :-) love it.

When I type certain first letter in Chrome, it hangs and depletes memory until it crashes.
For example "U" character. There is other character also.
I wonder if clearing history helps...

Are you getting "He's Dead, Jim!" or "Aw, Snap!", or is the entire browser crashing?

@Boris_yo why would you want to stop chrome from doing the one thing it does best? Suck memory up :-)

5:36 AM
@DragonLord Not responding and crashing ultimately.

superuser.com/questions/896936/… <--- Spam , taste like salt looks like ham.

Flagged.

Do you use compression when backing up data to external HDD?

@Boris_yo where are you typing in chrome that it does this?

@HackToHell I did some flying lessons, and the instructor demoed this. It wasn't really that windy, so he was over compensating to make a point. Absolutely bizarre sensation to be heading in to land with the nose pointing what felt like 45 degrees of to one side

5:41 AM
@Boris_yo Um, me?

@Psycogeek Address bar
@DragonLord You and @Psycogeek

File backups, yes, using 7-Zip.
System images, no.

@DragonLord Incrementals - no?

@Boris_yo It's just the built-in Windows system image backup, so that's not supported.
Incremental file backups are compressed.
File backups are done through Cobian Backup.

@Boris_yo I only use compression on the very compressable system when making image (clone) files. All other stuff media stuff already has some sort of compression, and compression makes recovery harder, and grabbing single file items back from the backup. So yes as useful and needed, no when unnessisary and more problematic.

5:44 AM
@DragonLord I am using COMODO and have option to checkmark "Compress Data" because by default it is not.

File History is also compressed on the backup drive, using NTFS compression.
(Note that File History and system image/Cobian Backup-based file backups are stored on separate disks.)

@Psycogeek But with image all files are included so there can be media too. That's the reason @DragonLord told he does not use compression for system images.

@Boris_yo The issue is that compression of system images is not supported with the built-in Windows system image backup system. (File History doesn't care.)

@DragonLord The downside with Cobian is that it does not prompt you before backup is to be initiated. I have external HDD that I must connect first but Cobian executes task and it fails.

I just do it manually every few days.

5:48 AM
@DragonLord Manually? Every time you drag and drop to make backup? Won't it be better to do it once and then automate?

@Boris_yo my system is fully seperate partition. the windows OS is critical to operation (plus me always wanting a GUI) , so no crap is ever stored on my system partition. All the data, and media and goodies are stored on the data partions. (excluding some lightweight media for the system)

@Boris_yo No, I just start the backup job manually every few days.
This avoids the issues associated with scheduling, as you've mentioned.

@Psycogeek But your default Download directory is on system drive?
@DragonLord So you are not aware if Cobian devs solved this issue with lacking prompt?

Cobian Backup development is stalled to my knowledge. The source has been sold to another developer; no updates on that.

@Boris_yo no way, downloads go to a directory for that purpose , on specific disk, then some have to be virus checked first.

5:51 AM
@DragonLord Know backup software that is easy on system resources and does what I am looking for?

@Boris_yo Sadly, not really
I've been trying to find a good solution myself but the best I could find required a separate server

@Psycogeek All my downloads go to that directory. I have 1 partition with 95% of SDD capacity and another is 5%. Maybe I should consider rapartitioning 40% and 60%?
@DragonLord The best thing about Cobian is easy drag&drop and you don't need to tinker with navigating directories, clicking + / - , select files etc.

@Paul Just watching the video made me sweat
But actually flying like that eeeeek

I heard about Backup 2 or so it called that @JourneymanGeek told me about year ago... it allows to setup sync.

@Boris_yo completly depends on how you set-it-up. my OS disk is always very small compared to a usual setup, to make cloneing it easy, to make it so i know what is actually there and going on. All stuff that started back when keeping it small and in control was very easy.
(it is no longer easy, and not even sure if it is worth it anymore, beings microsoft has it all under control LOLOLOL)

5:56 AM
@Psycogeek I should have done this too. Full backup every week - 4 times per month would take lot less time with it being 40% capacity of HDD.
@Psycogeek I think I will have to move to W8 because they will push me eventually.
Do you know if I can have discount to upgrade if I have W7 Enterprise?

The data disk can be synced to a external disk, because it is always file by file, unlocked stuff, that is not dependant on , or has dependencies that all (also) need to be in place. Synced meaning only the new stuff has to be copied.

Saw Samsung NX2000 mirrorless camera on Amazon for over $500 but included Adobe Lightroom for picture editing. Good deal? Would that software help me embellish objects I photograph for ecommerce?
Was wondering why my incremental backups container file increased to 400GB in size when my SDD has only 90GB of data out of 100GB. Asked in Comodo forums and nobody helped. Today realized I had "backup free space" checkmark selected.

*Slap in face with HDD
Incremental backup with backed up fee space. Smart... not.

i dont know, i toss lightroom, and bridge, i have viewers that work fine, and one photo program that i understand.
I dont know icramental either, because i had used those method before, and when things go to heck , it was a total pain working with parts and pieces everywhere to re-assemble a whole. Which explains again why my OS partition (cloned) is small, so the images are small.
Also with incramental, the programs often screwed up what was new, what changed. different things would make it think it changed when it did not.

What's the name of the phenomenon(?) where you can't tell if the other person is joking because of bad context

@Psycogeek This is what I want to achieve: tinypic.com/player.php?v=1ioi8m&s=8#.VRRLZfnxLwo
@Psycogeek What about differential?

6:10 AM
@Boris_yo how does differential differ ?

Differential backups are always based on the last full backup.
Incremental backups are based on the last full or incremental backup.

@DragonLord Differentials reference full backup and compare with current data on HDD?

@Boris_yo Precisely.

Incrementals reference full and last incremental to compare with current data on HDD?

So it is pretty much the same thing? store one more piece that requires the other piece to get to the whole? Really when things go to heck (with OS), one solid fast sure return is all i want to have to sweat over.

6:13 AM
@Psycogeek Differentials work independently I think.

I'm using bvckup2 for basic file copy backups (need to buy the full version at some point, I'm on an older, fully functional version). I useveem endpoint for full system backups - can't remember which but I think its incremental backup with user settable retention.

I also have incraments , but that for me just means whole backup OSes from last month.

so I have daily backups with a week of retention. Oldest non full backup gets merged into the full

They always backup data that has changed and is not in full backup again and again.

6:17 AM
If I were to select a commercial backup product, it's likely to be Acronis True Image.

If there are parts and pieces hanging out, plus if i have the "Instant clean install" clone, last years clone, last months clone. And I want to manually know where they are and put them in other places , more pieces is just too much stuff.

@JourneymanGeek Was it backup 2.0 that syncs? Is it now paid Pro version that is updated constantly and free version is no longer maintained?

@Boris_yo: yeah

@JourneymanGeek You paid for it and use it?

@Boris_yo: I'm still on the free version
Probably going to get the paid one at some point

6:21 AM
@Boris_yo Well then some of each sounds good, i assume that is what JMG is saying. a Full recovery item every month or 2, then parts and pieces covering the last few days as needed. But for me it is not nessisary, it is sytem only, system gets backed up only when it changes. All user crap, is in data disks, which sync.

@Psycogeek: If it dosen't change its not backed up. The advantage with snapshots is you can roll back to any specific point in time. If nothing changes, nothing is backed up
My main drive takes about 15 minutes to back up per day over gig-e

@JourneymanGeek How is the last part done? Gets merged in full? Why would something that is already full need have something merged?

@Boris_yo: cause its incremental. So say if you have 7 days backups, and you want the latest, you need the data from all 7 days

Running a full backup on Cobian.
Cobian Backup can't be used for backups that require bare-metal restore capability; I use Windows system image backups for that purpose.
The last system image backup was taken a few days ago.

Essentially its the same as backing up the whole system

6:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek as long as there is a Full recover somewhere, because rolling back parts is not always useful, proof of that is how badly "system restore" works (including of course how users will apply it)

@JourneymanGeek So it is setup to merge everything from 7 days into full?

@Boris_yo: no. It merges the oldest backup into full I think
But I can restore to the state my system was in for any backup in the last week

@JourneymanGeek So merges 7 incrementals into one and then merges that into base full image?

No. Merges the last incremental of 7 into the base. Makes a new incremental

@JourneymanGeek I know that all 7 incrementals have different data. Previous incrementals before 7th have data that is not in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Unlike 7 differentials for example that are independent of each other and don't need each other to bond data.

6:37 AM
see even if i have to understand what boris just said :-) a 1T disk would hold 100 of my full images of my OS disk, and takes 10min to make one, 4 min to return.
But if daily is needed, that wouldnt last to the first year even.

@Psycogeek Your OS disk is 10GB?

@Boris_yo no, it is 17g today, but it compresses to about 50% size
(it should be more like 13G , but there is some cleanup yet to do)
and there are 150 select program installed too, most from back when programming tight and right was a important thing to do.
Boris you are running a business that is storing stuff on the main disk like normal, you got your important e-mails. I think that a daily method would be suggested for a business.

Just when I was thinking about getting a Hazelnut Macchiato, Starbucks declares it discontinued :(
@Starbucks has discontinued their hazelnut drinks. Please tell me this is an April fools joke?! #heartbroken #fave #hazelnutmacchiato
Upon further research, it turns out they phasing it out since last December
...and no, it is not an April Fools joke.
HM is officially discontinued.

@Psycogeek: I consider weekly backups enough for personal use. especially if I can pair it up with more regular file level backups
My media files are backed up in near real time with bvckup to a samba share
But those are small, unchanging files with no real importance to versioning

6:59 AM
I'm recovering from a BSOD, hang on...
Looks like a new error to me.
Probably hard drive dock malfunction.
The docked drive wasn't detected on reboot, had to turn it off and turn it back on.

that is exactally it 65G, everything before that not existing, because change of motherboard , means i purposfully did clean install.

Problem was triggered by Cobian Backup (cbService.exe), crash was in a Norton driver (SRTSP64.SYS).
Could be a driver bug I've never encountered before.
The error code is 0x3B SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION.

these things (clone files) are all over the place :-) on the reserve drive, on the backup for it, and on the other computer. with the other computers back on this one :-) all i needed was more things to deal with.

Not a big fan of norton

...and this is probably unrelated to the historical crashes I've had before the repair-install.
My gut still tells me this is a hard drive dock malfunction (and it's happened before).
The Thermaltake BlacX dock has this tendancy to stop communicating under certain circumstances when connected via eSATA.
The telltale sign of this issue is the fact that the drive in the dock wasn't detected even after the machine was rebooted. I had to turn the dock off and on again.

7:09 AM
@DragonLord usb 3.0 ?

No, eSATA.

oh duhh you said that.
so that could be good right? get virus that starts deleting everything (or encryping), your dock is over there sleeping :-) and misses all the fun.

i'm not reading that :-) microsoft errors are only there to confuse us.
the real problem rarely relating to what they say in them.
@DragonLord ya know, there is a scene in a series TV show called "Being Erica" where she is suffering from anaphylactic shock, after the consumption of a "coffee house" (that looks just like SB) hazelnut drink

7:31 AM
0xC0000096 is PRIV_INSTRUCTION... odd. Very odd.
Good shot this is a driver bug.
Might well be a bug in Norton Security.
I've never encountered this specific error before.

@DragonLord what was your fist clue "WIN8_DRIVER_FAULT" ?
(yea i did read it, but didnt enjoy it)

Oh well, probably a one-off error. Let's hope this doesn't happen again.
GTG.

You already know? drive was asleep, backup tried to write to it, norton saw files moving around, wanted to scan everything, they all ran around with thier arms in the air and crashed into eachother.

If anyone else has any ideas, feel free to ping me. See ya.

After upgrading to Firefox 37 (on Ubuntu) I'm experiencing something like this. The YouTube HTML5 Player timeline flickers (or has a black box on top of it) occasionally. I wonder if this also happens on other platforms.

9:18 AM
what would be the maximum time a person would wait before assuming it doesn't happen? Or how many times a minute does it happen to you?

ace
Tested a few several-minute long videos, and this happened on all of them
This has been reproduced by another Ubuntu user. (chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/20877122#20877122)
Just want to see whether it is Ubuntu-specific or Linux-specific or whatever

in IE11 win7 using html5 only I do not see it, but it is very subtle thing when watching the video itself instead. so How Long should i watch this bar , before assuming it does not happen?

ace
Oh. Sorry if I didn't express myself clearly. I'm asking about Firefox 37 on other platforms (operating systems).

Bob
@ace FF37 hasn't rolled out to release yet for me (Windows).
Hm. Installer's available but auto-update isn't. IIRC they wait a day or two before updating.

Bob
Well, I could manually update. I just don't usually bother :P

ace
I mean, you don't have to do it just to test this bug. I just want to see if people can reproduce before actually writing up a bug report
And I guess someone will eventually do it if I don't
so it's not that important. in fact it doesn't really affect video playback

9:58 AM
@sch: Well, if you don't understand the consequences and if you're in the habit of having files named $(reboot) on your computer, maybe you shouldn't run commands you find on the internet with sudo ;D But, thanks for providing a better version, feel free to edit or post it as an answer, so it doesn't get lost in comments. — Oliver Salzburg ♦ 2 mins ago

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Eek. On one hand, the everything-is-text *nix pipelines make it easy to slap arbitrary parts together. On the other, there's so many pitfalls...
goes back to PowerShell's object pipeline

if you have to type all that stuff in to find some files or folders , then i am hoping that the work done is putting it into a program (once) so it can be used 100 times :-)

I should probably grab a tarball ;p

@Bob Oh, he definitely has a point, but so do I ;D

10:34 AM
"The WinSXS folder is a bunch of symlinks to the same files which artificially increases the reported size of the folder in question." not that it matters, because both links are as valid , but the "Web" always says this, that the SXS files are the linked ones. I have viewed the SXS as the Originals, and the "linked" as the installed programs. because Add/remove program feature removed the link from the programs area, and leaves the link in the SXS
But everytime the web percieves it the other way around.
My wording for it is more like "The WSXS is where the whole freaking system is stored" the rest of it just linked back to it. Which should have solved the "why is it so big" question a lot faster.

Bob
10:48 AM
finally
took a bloody long time to get all of them filled
@Psycogeek they're hard links, not symbolic links
hard links don't have an 'original'; both references to the file are identical
...could we get one more voter? we have a sabotager ffs
well, either sabotage or clueless

@Bob one comes before the other in the MFT? When turning off a program in windows , one does not exist at all. Then, what is happening during an install when after the piles of files are dumped on, when it goes to "installing programs" ? I said they are both valid links to the same.

Bob
@Psycogeek They're functionally identical.
Hard links point (conceptually) directly to the data.
Symbolic links point to another FS metadata entry.

But like in my system with much of it turned off, they do not exist as secondarily linked files.
Where then are those files still existing?
in only one link in only the wsxs
the whole "install" still exists in that (what i call original) location, even with much of it uninstalled.
Or more proper terms, the one link portrays it as being in that folder :-)

Bob
this is why we can't have nice things

@Bob unbelievable, looked like you were headed to a less than 350 days .

11:02 AM
@Psycogeek It was nearly done.
Meh.

@Psycogeek Someone made a script which spams restart votes when sites are nearing completition.
He posted it in Arqade yesterday, and we told him off, but obviously people have been using it.

11:52 AM
Hey! I'm having some problems with my internet connection and my landlord is rather tech-illiterate so I'd like to try and troubleshoot it myself. Basically my internet connection seems to slow down to a crawl every day when I've been online for an hour or so. It seems likely that my connection is being choked as soon as I'm using up "too much" bandwidth. What can I do about this? Are there any common problems that I can look into? If I get access to the router settings, what should I look for?
If nothing else I need some leverage to use to convince my landlord to do something about it and help him along the way.

What is your connetion method to the router and/or modem? what is your ISP and type of connection , in what country?

Wi-Fi, Telia, Sweden
By type of connection, do you mean speed?
Sorry, I'm a bit out of the loop about these kinds of things

12:08 PM
Sure speed, and if it is adsl , wi-fi or cable or whatever from the ISP itself? Did rebooting the router ever work to get your speed back?

I just checked what I thought was the router but I think that may just be some kind of access point (Technicolor tg233). It has three switches: station, access point and auto and it's set to "station". It has one network cable plugged in which is plugged into another small box that I believe is for the TV. It seems like the actual modem/router is located elsewhere in a place I don't have access to.
Since I don't have access to the actual router/modem I can't confirm what type of connection I have but the Network Utility app on my Mac says my speed should be 144 Mbit/s
I have tried rebooting this device in the past but that has never helped
Hmm, I tried turning the aforementioned device off and my internet connection is still working fine so it might just have been connected to the TV

12:28 PM
might also be the wifi

As in a problem with my computer's wifi?

the technicolor is a technicolor.com/en/solutions-services/connected-home/… "Wireless Access Point - MediaConnect" and users indicate it can come with a broadband package.
So far I do not find a lot of users saying anything about the ISP itself throttling.

Well, now it's completely unplugged
So I suppose it's probably not the main problem here
Unless my landlord manages to fix the problem by contacting my ISP's customer support I'll try and get access to the router settings
Is there anything in particular I should look for there?

Myself i dont know wi-fi, other than firing up a signal analiser, which i do with android phone, to see strength of signal and interfearnce stuff (channel use, and other peoples on it). But other chatters here know that stuff better

Ok, I'll hang around a bit if someone can help
Btw, I think the actual router's name is Technicolor TG799vn v2

12:44 PM
Sure you could also formulate a good SU question, with all available data. Knowing that you have one good chance to get it seen, before it drifts off into the pile.

Yeah, I just feel like it's not specific enough. I might do that if all else fails though.

(probably after you are sure about router and modem speed and all.)

Haha, yeah

@burnso: wifi, especially in urban areas, tends to be really hit or miss

3:28 PM
@JourneymanGeek I suppose that's true. But there has to be a cause for this. Probably the way my landlord set up the router. Hopefully he'll let me snoop around in its settings a bit though, should solve my problems
