anybody ever play resident evil 6 ? trying to figure out the cover system, when the "jump over the cover" button is the same as the "stay low behind cover" button.
Interestingly enough as retarded as i feel playing it, just smashing the buttons like a monkey has worked out ok :-)
While it is all adventurous and all, it just feels wrong running direct into a machine guns fire, and having to get closer to explosives to continue.
It feels like training for the army of the "you gonna be dead if fight like that"
Or for the army sent by the goverment interested in population control, not really winning.
"Well general we didnt win but now we can get all the wimin pregnent again"

2:56 AM
I am on the Flashback chapter, were the captain has lost his whole unit/squad
If they aim another machine gun towards me, I'll be the one to send them there
Ok so he was shooting the guy comming up behind me. . . with it on auto?
Plus the nutjobs are running headlong into a 70 foot godzilla impervious monster
The whole teams dies huh, well they should.
I will have thier dead bodies court marshaled when I get back!

I can't believe I still had a Subversion installation on my computer
I hadn't touched it in ages.
Finally updated it to 1.8.13.

hehe
what projects still use Svn?

4:44 AM
Not a whole lot from what I can tell.
Besides, Git has SVN support built in.

Hopefully they have cables in my area :/
Google and and it's protocols .... techcrunch.com/2015/04/18/…

@allquixotic ...everything we do -_-
except the stuff still on CVS or TFS/TFVCS
@DragonLord Just about everything enterprisey, and quite a bit that's not, too.
And git-svn isn't a particularly good client. It works in a pinch.
@DragonLord No. It is not ideal. At all.

How?

Bob
We use it because that's what people know. and apparently a DVCS is too confusing for people who can't even figure out SVN (see above re: CVS/TFVCS)
@DragonLord How is it supposed to be ideal? What's the advantage?
What, being able to lock a file you're editing? Welcome to the wonderful world of people not releasing locks.

It's proven stable technology that is easy to work with.
Yes, it has all sorts of issues, but it just works.

Bob
@DragonLord When's the last time you tried to use SVN? It is not stable.
I'm still getting emails about people failing to import/commit/whatever because a working copy got corrupted.

I have not had any issues from my internal use of SVN before switching over to Git.
Well, this shows how little I know.

Bob
5:59 AM
I got pulled into troubleshooting some failed commit cause the working copy was so hopelessly broken we had to copy out changed files, delete the entire directory and check out everything again.

I'm completely blind to all this because I've never used any VCS in a production environment.

Bob
There's nothing more inherently stable about SVN than Git or Hg.
At the end of the day, all the clients have bugs in some way or other. Not sure about the specs, though.
@DragonLord Most VCSes will seem alright when you use it by yourself. It's when you throw 10+ people at it that things start breaking.
@DragonLord Companies that really want enterprisey use TFVCS.
I'll admit I'm personally not very familiar with it, but I've heard the horror stories.

To tell the truth, I've had issues with reverting changes and moving files across directories. SVN gets confused about what files have changed and commits fail.
Git has no such issues; it intelligently compares files with what's in the history and generates efficient deltas without the need to keep track of file moves and copies.
Git also allows the history to be manipulated much more easily so that problems can be fixed relatively easily, without the need to dump the whole repo.
Git did manage to somehow corrupt one particular file in one revision for some weird reason, but that was addressed by pulling the file out of Windows File History.

Bob
@DragonLord That's the other thing. Broken SVN commit? Wrong files? Revealed a password? Too bad.
@DragonLord That's normally related to EOL processing.
One thing I don't particularly like about Git.

@Bob These were binary files. Git knew they were binary.

Bob
6:07 AM
(There are others, but can't remember off the top of my head.)

The repository in question contained video game saves, and the affected file was a Borderlands 2 save file.

Bob
No VCS is really perfect, but some are far worse than others.
@DragonLord Unless you specifically turned off core.autocrlf or specified the file type (e.g. in a .gitattributes), mixups do happen at times.

6:41 AM
ugh.
needs to take advantage of VM snapshots more.
I need to redo a install of something cause I messed up and did something stupid. And I could have avoided this if I'd done the smart thing and just snapshotted.

6:54 AM
What's with the recent increase in nonsense posts like this? superuser.com/posts/903320/revisions (10k only)

donno
school holidays?

It's a bit of a disturbing trend I'm seeing here on Super User.

meh, its always happened

Just wanted to throw this out here if anyone wants to help clear this confusion (by agreeing or disagreeing) - the close votes on superuser.com/questions/135498/… seem backward - the dupe should be this one - superuser.com/questions/72449/…

ahh slap em both together call it a day :-)

@Psycogeek Read about PowerShot G16 and CoolPix P7700? Former has optical viewfinder, Wi-Fi and hot shoe for external flash but lacks external mic, latter has retractable and rotatable LCD, external mic, Wi-FI and wireless flash (I guess no need for remote?) and strangely $130 more expensive where I live...

11:54 AM
Flash can always be done with a 'slave" unit ?? i donno but i use one of them vivitar full sized zenon flash (bigger than the camera :-) that triggers when it sees another flash. I thought it would have trouble reacting so quick, but it works fin for 60shutter speed.
My original idea was it would work with A) any camera , B) in any position , like next to it with one of them mounts that holds both, or downstream as a fill or key lighting.
The only reason i needed a flash unit, is because all compact and even sub compact cameras the flash is useless a mere 10 feet away.
Rotating screen things , not so special unless your a selfie nut. And rotatating electronics stuff (even laptops) means wires that have to twist , flex , bend. Luckily they are doing that very well.
External microphone or seperate audio pickup (audio recorder) is critical to making videos (with sound worth hearing). Un camera mics are usually omni, they will always pick up the noises of the camera and person. on camera mics could be usefull for stuff that is 6 feet or closer to the camera. Any serious recording of audio or audio for video would need the mic to be A) a more directional style and/or B) put closer to the subject.
So having external mic was always very important to me on video cameras, Phones and still digital cameras are NOT nor will ever be video cameras, they are still cameras first with video tossed on the side.
So how important a external mic is, when there can be about 4 other issues doing video with a still camera, that will still make it frustrating.
Viewfinders vrses screens come in most critical when your outside, there are like no screens that you can see for squat with the sun hitting them. You can buy shades for screens and ever hoods that make them eyepieces, but they are all klutzy additions, that do not always work well.
A digital tiny screen viewfinder (not screen) are oftern lower res, but because you stick your eye on it, they at least work outside. optical viewfinders are not always showing the exact same thing as the picture is going to be, but are great when you just need to see to aim (in the sun). View through optical viewfinders , are like old school camera stuff, viewing through the actual lens (SLR cameras only) .

@Psycogeek Think this macro one should be good for Nexus 4 to photo small details? ebay.com/itm/…

addon lenses are what they are. and are what they are worth :-) best to get user reviews. all add-on lenses below the $100 price tag are almost toys only . different cameras will react thier auto focus different, some you are required to go manuel for focus. All wide(r) lenses have some distortion, cheap one have distortion that is so much it is an "effect" :-) macro is already hard to focus, cheap macro lenses will have parts of your pic in focus , and most of it wacked :-)
All things you have to see for yourself, Use the usual Buyers method. Get the cheap one, realise that wouldnt work on your childs fisher price toy. get the more expencive one, and get 1/2 way there, always thinking it is just wrong. then pay out the nose for good lenses and it finnaly works.
the phone cameras (if you can call them that:-) have the advantage of a very limited ammount of lensing already. it is sencor chip with barely usable lens , not multiple lenses , so that actually helps, when your not fighting compound lensing.

12:43 PM
@Psycogeek The lens in question was for Nexus 4, not camera.

at that price you have nothing to lose , but be sure to tell how it goes.

@Psycogeek Many that are sold on Amazon are shipped from China, Hong Kong and Singapore...

and so they are made, great for experimenting , just dont assume that all add-on lenses are as bad as some.
some of the cheap lenses are so poorly and quickly made you can see the distortions and wrongness in the glass itself before even putting it up to the task of pictures.

@Psycogeek They are all generic and that's the problem. You never know abotu quality and even if you do, it can vary between batches.
I was disappointed with taste...

1:00 PM
"The lid makes coffe taste like you are drinking it from a car tire" ahh too bad, guess you will have to stick with drinking from the hose.

@Psycogeek Where did you see that comment?
Car tire indeed...

in the (very few) bad reviews.

@Psycogeek I should review it too because now I will be using it as thermos for storage.
"Made in China" rings something?

Oh you have one? How can you taste the rubber with all the burnt beans? Could be some of you are not making the coffee strong enough? When you pour your coffee does it come out in chunks ?

@Psycogeek It's instant coffee.

1:07 PM
use one of these , your coffee wont spill :-)

@Psycogeek Your way to becoming TV-brainwashed zombie with diabetes...
@Psycogeek Do you know how to view seller feedback on eBay for specific transaction? I want to see what customers who bought lens said.

No i do not, there must be a way, but i just set to show 100 feedback items, and (sometimes) use FIND in the browser.

@Psycogeek Yea I do that too. I am looking for Female-to-Female 3.5mm audio converter but this one seems for iPhone only? ebay.com/itm/…
I also see gold-plated ones but it's just plating which influences conductivity?

that is 4 connecting one, allows for mic also (or alternativly are used for video audio on some sony things)
@Boris_yo I have quite a few of those, from radioshack. no wire just a female interconnector.
Did you hear the Radioshack one of the biggest chains for electronics in america, which put out of business thousands of small ma&pa electronics stores, then eventually trimmed back the electronics , and now it is Going under, they closed thousands of stores.
One more round of beat them down with corporate hugeness (and cheap junk prices), then the corporation just leaves us all high and dry.

1:27 PM
@Psycogeek No that's news to me. I heard Office Depot went bankrupt a while ago... Also Coby electronics maker followed suit leaving warranty holding users behind...

coby was really cheap stuff that was pretty bad, i dont know anything they made that was high quality.
fact is all of these people going under have sold out thier soul and thier customer base , to a greedy profit only scheme. Which is wonderfull capitolism, if everything else that had competed with them had not gone away :-(
I really wonder how Long the competitions would Have To hold out , before the greed and bad products kills the corporate pigs.
Many of which stores i was going to before they were mowed down by the huge corporate chains. More than once i was irritated that the little guy was destroyed because i needed to buy stuff from them still :-(
@Boris_yo ahh this must be it ebay.com/itm/…

1:45 PM
@Psycogeek There is no point of brand to exist if it only offers sub-par quality. Quality and service is the point of having brand. People go to brands because they look for that thinking they do the right choice by avoiding generic but those brands are fake offer same generic sub-par junk.

yes, when branded items known for quality like even sony (which i thought was made in japan) farms out some junk to be made cheaply . Some brands survive this fine by defining the products seperate, our value product line. Most of them just shoot themselves in the foot instead.

@Psycogeek You mean they create separate product line for cheaper junk which is on-par with generic junk and just brand them?

right, but to keep it defined as seperate, even in-so-much as the "pro" line vrses the consumer line, or any seperations.

....
I spent 5 minutes anwering his question and he goes and deltes it
not sure how
since i had posted the answer..
question preview 4 the loss

I have not kept up with it well, but sony is even having 4K $6000 cameras made in china, and branded the same as sonys own. some people were noticing the huge differance in the general quality of the build.
@Ramhound that really sucks. they can delete thier own question taking the answer out with it, but then the user name will get banned if they do it too often. But that does not matter when they can just come in again as a new name.
I think there are ways that it does not leave as easily, like many upvotes, but i am not sure.

1:55 PM
When did that change. I have some qusitons on SO that I can't delete because they have an answer but they community didn't accept the question

@Psycogeek Looks like they grow too big to pay attention to quality?

Tempted to write up a question, mention him by name, and quote his question, then answer it myself :$
Because the QR nature of the question was sort of valid

@Ramhound Why not? if it was a question that can have a good answer, you could remake the question, and paste the answer back.

Its sort of passive aggressive ;-)

Only problem with self-answered, some people who think rep is like money , treat self answered poorly. As if Your just trying to leach rep.

1:58 PM
Which is why it would be a community wiki
I got nearly a 1000 reputation for a copy and paste answer. The community literally makes no sense at times

A: Where is the Apps key on a standard Microsoft keyboard?

Ramhound In computing, the menu key or application key (≣ Menu) is a key found on Microsoft Windows-oriented computer keyboards, introduced at the same time as the Windows logo () key. Its symbol is usually a small icon depicting a pointer hovering above a menu, and it is typically found on th...

32 upvotes for that answer makes no sense.

@Psycogeek Seems like weird taste disappears when coffee returns to normal temperature. Seems like chemistry problem. RE: Contigo Travel Mug

You dont get rep for answering hard questions nobody knows, you get rep for answering questions that everyone agrees you said it correctally :-) The same answer they would mostly provide if you had not.

illogical
<-- Vulcan; everyone <- Terran
bah!

@Boris_yo There are tricks you could apply. Not sure what would work. But one would be to coat the seals with vegtable oil. it will "cover" the rubber, and even permiate any porosity. This could keep it from leeaching out as much.
That assumes it is comming from the seals and not PFTEs from the plastics.

@Ramhound popular questions skew things ;p

2:24 PM
GTA 5 keeps getting corrupted
really annyoing

@Psycogeek PFTEs?

@Boris_yo PTFEs ? heck i dont do abbreviations. It is the softener in plastics. Or i would say more generally it is always about all the "things" added to plastics to achieve the right flexability, tensile strength, and all. Not that it matters when plastic is made from old dinasours anyways :-)
no wrong again, PTFEs are teflons. Anyways whatever leeches out of plastics. if they identify one thing today, tomorrow they will come out with the ----Free version, and it will still have some stuff that leaches out and tastes bad.
safest thing is to drink your coffe from hommade clay pots :-)

Hopefully whatever is leaching is not harmful for health...

thats it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phthalate Phthalate is the latest buzzword on toxic plastics
But it is better to avoid the hype of today, and see the "toxic" section here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Plastics 2/3rds of the way down on the plastics page. where arrays of things that have been or will be the latest hype are.

2:41 PM
@Psycogeek So it's different than BPA...

"benzyl butyl phthalate, is a phthalate"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A BPA is a type of plastics? so a BPA-Free product , may still have the same rubber-nitrol seals that a non-BPA product could have? so if the seals are giving the taste.
Does it really matter? they pretty much banned putting lead in paint, because of kids who chew on walls. But I cant find a Plate to eat on that isnt made in china and has small lead in it still.
If all these paranoid about health countries ban everything , still china pumps out 20 billion tons of it , and that is all you can buy anyways :-)
"Some polymers may also decompose into the monomers or other toxic substances when heated. In 2011, it was reported that "almost all plastic products" sampled released chemicals with estrogenic activity" Thats right, Plastic gives you man-Boobs :-)
" That happens to nearly all of us; the CDC has found BPA in the urine of 93% of surveyed Americans over the age of 6. If you don't have BPA in your body, you're not living in the modern world."

3:14 PM
Polyethylene terephthalate (PETE) is the main substance used to package bottled water and many sodas. . . .. Although the word "phthalate" appears in the name, PETE does not use phthalates as plasticizers. The terephthalate polymer PETE and the phthalate ester plasticizers are chemically different substances.[54] Despite this, however, a number of studies have found phthalates such as DEHP in bottled water and soda.
In small single bottled water here, some of the cheaper stuff bought on sales (really cheap) can have a plastic taste to it, some of the more primo stuff does not seem to have as much plastic leaching.

@Psycogeek I can't pronounce these properly...
