Q: How do I back up my SSD?

snipeMy laptops' master boot record is messed up, the drive had windows 10 on it , I cannot boot to windows; So now I really want to just back up my documents that were on windows 10, it's too much data for my 16GB USB stick. Id like to back it up inside of a GUI so I don't miss anything, I have a des...

@JourneymanGeek s/neat/rubegoldbergish/

@snipe: You can probably still do a readonly mount on linux

Bob
At that point just get a desktop :\

3:11 AM
@Bob: very!
(also, I'd blame XP for this. hybrid gpt/mbr installs are supposed to be fragile)

Bob
once you try to install XP, it's not hybrid anything

Bob
XP has approximately zero support for GPT
the only reason hybrid MBR/GPT exists is to boot GPT with legacy firmware, which is a stupid idea in itself - but that's got little to do with other OSes
but quite aside from that, this is a terribly misguided attempt to install XP on modern hardware, and attempting to install it in parallel to a modern OS
could've told you from the start it wasn't going to end well

didn't we?

Pretty sure it's still starred...

Bob
3:18 AM
the only good reason to install XP now is to run legacy software that won't work in a modern OS for whatever reason (typically, because it's old enough to be 16-bit) - and those will run just fine in a VM, and you won't even notice the overhead (minor as it is in the age of hardware virtualisation)
heck, with a halfway-decent hypervisor, it's most likely more stable than trying to hammer in drivers not designed with that OS in mind

@Bob: or the old hairy chestnut - some wierd old hardware ;p

Bob
drivers are by definition very low-level kernel-mode code, and often makes assumptions about kernel behaviour (in addition to being able to completely stuff up the OS, and cause all sorts of stability issues if anything goes wrong)

vm software fails in win 10
ive said that

well, it is a prerelease I guess.

win 10 os crap as is i u and vista
i cant see what im typing with this chat

Here's the problem. You've got stuff you want on 1) a prelease OS. 2) are running an obsolete OS as well.

I bet windows i sucks forsupporting apps

3:52 AM
windows i?

Bob
So you're the kind of guy who doesn't read warnings and instructions.
> Remember, trying out an early build like this can be risky. That's why we recommend that you don't install the preview on your primary home or business PC. Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything.

is there another way to chat here
its not my fault win 8 and 7 suck it was the only option
linix or 10
I tried linux it sucked

heh. I run 7 and 8. Both are fine.

Bob
^

but not for me
I already tried 10 on a test pc

Bob
3:58 AM
Architecturally, Vista was a massive leap forward, and 7 and 8 have improved on that.

it was ok

Bob
The theme has changed, but if you really must you can retheme it.

i tried that and it didnt work
f8 doesnt work
apps and games dont run

Apps and games run great on 7, 8, and probably 10.
However that's very dependant on what apps and games you mean.

thats not what ive seen
maybe if it wasnt for that efi crap it would have let me install 7

4:05 AM
If you can install XP, you can install 7 in most cases.

I still cant boot to xp
unless I remove the efi drive
thats how the stupid bootmgr got messed up
whats wrong with boot. ini
why do I need efi
wheres the net

hm. If its minor MBR borkedness, testdisk might help

4:31 AM
gonna have to leave - cant type on this stupid phone

you do have the site in mobile mode. right?
(or get chatsey if you're on android)

yes
the keyboard covers the chat box
I hate phones

I mean device wise

touch typing is real typing
not that swiping around a on screen keyboard ;p

its a pain in the ass
i want something small with a hardware keyboard

or just get a BT keyboard. MS is supposed to be releasing a really nice folding one soon

tried a bt keyboard, cant use them lying down

we need a pc that is a proper pc where we can walk around usint it

Q: Bad sectors on Disk

user431985There are multiple bad sectors on my Hard disk, as the message is shown. I want to reinstall OS on the disk. Is it possible to do the same. If yes whats the process which needs to be followed.

I don't get why someone would do this, if you cared the slightest bit about your data

Bob
O_O
@JourneymanGeek apparently Xiaomi has new headphones coming out soon: mi.com/huosai

those look slick
They apparently have open back, over ears planned too

Bob
hm
must... resist... temptation

7:47 AM
lol
I'm good for now, I have 2 good pairs, one tolerable one, and proper headphones ;p

Bob
They're available (pre-order, which is weird) for $22 AUD here
@JourneymanGeek Have you tried it?

they do look really nice.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm surprised they make no mention of beryllium after all the fuss before :P

;p, yeah

That seems a really flowery way to say "we wanted to save some money" :P

That seems new to me. Two layered diaphragms?
rofl

Bob
idk, it's machine translated

No, It does show a 2 layered diaphram, which is odd. usually its just one layer of really thin material

Bob
I find it really weird that they use a screw in it O_O

yup. and its so prominant, whem its holding a decorative element in place

Bob
lol that freq response chart
of course Beats has the crazy bass boost -_-
@JourneymanGeek that seems like the ideal place to just use a bit of glue

7:53 AM
@Bob: IKR?

Bob
especially because the screw head faces inwards

Bob
waiiiiit
that pic of the mic
It looks like the mic is higher up (not at the split)
:D

I thought that was normal?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The previous Pistons put the mic at the split
So it hangs a bit under your chin instead of next to your mouth
I don't know of any other manufacturer that does that.
Yup! :D

7:56 AM
Oh, the creatives put it way up at one split.

Bob

(but I don't use the headset much anyway

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ... one split?
I mean the pistons had it at the place where the two wires split off

one side of the split.
damn, those do look nice ;p

@JourneymanGeek Don't forget the direct retail.
Retail markups can often be > 50%

@Bob: we didn't get mom's phone direct retail, we got it off the phone company, recontracted. I was thinking the RRP

That was hillarious. My boss is convinced we had my probation interview (That's in another 3 months) and that I was out of probation ;p
(I'm like whaaa?)

Why are some users not nuked after posting spam, others are, for the same kind of spam. Is it depending on the kind of deletion (Community), should further action bee taken is one user is spamming two days in follow without getting nuked?

who?
Gone. The user's posts were community deleted, rather than mod deleted, so no one saw it.

@JourneymanGeek OK, thanks, should an other be added in cases like this?

naw. Its an edge case ;p

OK, thanks ... cu

There's two things worth considering - one is the automatic spam block engine (which is learning from this), and you can always let us know about stuff like this ;p

10:22 AM
the problem with the Spyhunter spams is that they are always hidden in a second layer with different sites, I'm collecting chat.meta.stackexchange.com/…

That happens pretty often now, they're catching on ;p
I reported a spammer who used a sourceforce page as a landing page.

many of them in the last days, on different SE Sites

ya. and they prolly have multiple accounts. We occationally need to get hold of other site mods or staff for stuff like that.

I hope we'll get the Spam Flag with comment soon, sometimes it's hard to flag without ability to say why using other is not loved everywhere

Oh. I THINK you can use "other", add a comment, then switch back to a spam flag.

10:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek mhhhmm, IIRC I tried this ON SO and the "other" was handled hours later

2 hours later…

12:13 PM
@JourneymanGeek My end of probation turned into... actually, absolutely nothing happened.

@Bob: The joke being, my boss was convinced the interview had happened

@Bob: the volume controls on the headphones don't work on the moto G

Hey @jokerdino how are things going with Dota 2?

Bob
1:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek :(
@JourneymanGeek Does the mic work?
o.O
That seems like a really weird design decision.

@Bob: it should? ;p
I NEVER use the mic

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Basically, no headset's volume controls will work on your phone...

Yeah ;p
(Oh well, planning on getting a new phone next year)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Dammit, the Clevo laptop has separate headphone and mic ports :P

lol
I have a splitter

Bob
1:26 PM
@JourneymanGeek I have splitters going the other way :\
(male trrs female trs)

My creatives came with a trrs to 2x trs

Bob
wtf is that
I struggle to think of a use.

IIRC some devices use a TRRS jack as USB

Bob
o.o
Wouldn't that be... pretty shit?

A: 3.5mm type custom USB connector

Anindo GhoshSome consumer electronic devices have occasionally used 3.5mm TRRS to USB connectors. For instance, the LG A155 mobile phone and several older MP3 players do this. The most commonly used pin-out (iPod Shuffle 2G, Dolphin Swimmer MP3 player, Samsung YP-F1) is (source): Tip --> D- Ring1 --> D+ R...

yup but... erm
I struggle to find a sensible reason for that ;p

Q: Why aren't headphone jack shaped plugs used for data?

DrewWith Apple's lightning cable, and USB 3.0, reversible cables are taking off, and I personally think this is very convenient. But we have had better than reversible for a long time, in the form of the headphone jack, which can be inserted in any direction, not just 2 directions. Why isn't a headph...

its made in "Mainland China"

@JourneymanGeek Funnily enough? Looks like Russia isn't excluded.
No idea why it turned up on my search, though.

cause it dosen't say excludes australia

Bob
1:47 PM
Here's an identical item that does post here: ebay.com.au/itm/…
(odd that the mic is a TRS, not TS...)
@JourneymanGeek it excludes Sydney Metro and Oceania, though
and ebay is smart enough to tell me that when I try to buy it

But not australia!
You could order it from say...
The Territory of Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It has a population of 2,072 residents who live in a number of "settlement areas" on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove (also known as Kampong), Silver City, Poon Saan, and Drumsite. The majority of the population are Chinese Australian. It is called "Christmas Island" because it was discovered on Christmas Day (25 December 1643). The island's geographic isolation and history of minimal human disturbance has led to a high level of endemism among its flora and fauna, which is of interest to scientists...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ebay knows I'm in Sydney. That's where the "Doesn't post to Sydney Metro" comes from
@JourneymanGeek Also, that's under Oceania
And I'm not sure there's even mail services there.

;p
(it dosen't? Damn it, you need to take care of our one former colony better!)

2:22 PM
hm
pistons sound good through my nicer gear
(and they pass the VW test ;p)

I have a question; I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway

Bob
@allquixotic Do I need to !!meta you? :P
@JourneymanGeek VW test?
Ok... looking for an external DVD drive. There's two Samsung ones, SE-218GN and SE-208GB, both available on Amazon, that seem to be nearly identical... wtf

Spotify on Note 4 -> analog 3.5" connector (TRRS) -> two cables, one for mic and one for stereo audio -> Steelseries H Wireless base station, which is an amp and a wireless transmitter to the headphones.
is it better to turn volume down in Android and max out the base station volume, or max out Android's volume and set the volume down to a comfortable level on the base station?
in terms of audio quality

@Bob: the album version of a specific indica track has the sound of a VW bust starting.

Bob
@allquixotic The former, as long as it doesn't clip... in which case, the latter :P

2:26 PM
its what I use as a quick check to whether my headphones are acceptable

Bob
@JourneymanGeek OH THAT ONE LOL

can't find that version on youtube.

You linked it before.

A: From a quality perspective, what is better: turning volume up in the software, in the OS, or on the speakers?

IndrekProgram vs. OS generally doesn't matter. What matters is whether you're adjusting volume in software or in hardware. Reducing volume in software is basically equivalent to reducing the bit depth. In digital audio, the signal is split up into distinct samples (taken thousands of times per second)...

really depends on how your phone implements "100%" though
@JourneymanGeek has the engine starting => youtube.com/watch?v=QknrV7DOrfc

2:29 PM
@Bob really? I thought you're supposed to max the digital volume because lowering volume in digital is equivalent to reducing the number of bits of information
digital volume attenuation is like digitally resizing an image to a smaller resolution, IIRC

@allquixotic: I tend to max out the source, and control volume at the last stage I can

Bob
@allquixotic That's assuming the device considers "max" to be without boosting

but you'll likely need dog hearing to tell the difference ;p

@Bob I'm pretty sure the Android volume sliders don't boost.

Bob
@allquixotic Unless it's HTC :P

2:31 PM
@allquixotic: practically controlling the volume on your headphones is easier ;p

Bob
> The SE-218GN measures 148.6 x 14 x 146 mm / 5.85 x 0.55 x 5.76 inches. The SE-208GB is a bit thicker but not as wide, at 148 x 14.4 x 143 mm / 5.82 x 0.56 x 5.62 inches.
That seems to be the only difference
wtf

@Bob: funny thing is that little clip is so... simple that it sounds about the same on any source.
I think I bought my M50s based off that and my ipod, and the very first thing I tried on my fishers was that on my nicer audio gear

ahh... also, when I lower the android volume and max the base station volume, I hear an audible static near the top of the frequency domain.. it's a very low volume white noise
the volume is VERY low but still noticeable, and I hear it in quiet passages of music

oh, that happens sometimes

when I max out the android volume and turn down the base station volume to about 75%, it's fine

2:37 PM
heh, I forgot that most of my proper setup has volume knobs ._.

so the unattenuated digital PCM data gets sent to the DAC, and the DAC transmits it at full quality and full "voltage" I guess in its analog form

then the base station picks it up as analog, digitally attenuates it a bit, and transmits it over their proprietary wireless protocol

maybe?

Q: From a quality perspective, what is better: turning volume up in the software, in the OS, or on the speakers?

QqwyIf music isn't loud enough, how do I get the best quality (even if the difference is in fact so small it's negligible)? By making the music louder in my music player, game or other sound-producing software program? By raising the volume at the operating system level (for instance, by clicking t...

> Attenuating a signal is done by multiplying each sample by a number less than one, with the result being that you're no longer using the full resolution to describe the audio, resulting in reduced dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio. Specifically, every 6 dB of attenuation is equivalent to reducing the bit depth by one. If you started with, say, 16-bit audio (standard for audio CDs) and reduced the volume by 12 dB, you'd effectively be listening to 14-bit audio instead.

2:58 PM
Android's internal audio processing pipeline is 16-bit as of Kitkat, but increases to 24 bit in Lollipop
ANOTHER reason to want Lollipop, which simply seems to be delayed forever and ever by Shitsung

This is really messing with my day O__o

Bob
@allquixotic Actually, not really that great a reason.
There are other reasons, yea, but 32-bit audio isn't all that significant.

@Bob well if the noise floor of a 32-bit audio path (with a supporting DAC, of course) is better than the noise floor of the base station of my H Wireless, it's a net benefit
well, great... AT&T is rolling out the Note 4 Lollipop upgrade now.
AT&T, the most conservative, anti-consumer carrier in the US.
and Verizon is still completely silent on it.

Bob
@allquixotic Whoops, s/32-bit/24-bit/

...as in "you install this JS script or you're arrested"
Okay, this looks like an MITM

@DragonLord This issue has affected us greatly as we host our sources on GitHub and many of our dependencies are hosted with them
It showed us how fragile our whole deployment process is, if GitHub is under attack
And, of course, today we had a major release which was delayed due to this issue

1 hour later…
11:14 PM
@OliverSalzburg mirror on bitbucket?

@allquixotic We have that already
But our CI is set up with GitHub and changing that is cumbersome
Also, we pull a lot of bower dependencies during deployment. These are pulled from GitHub 95% of the time
We have analyzed those dependencies today and are aware of the problem and the possible solutions (which require work we originally wanted to avoid by using GitHub)
The thing is, if GitHub is having issues, we'd probably be better off by using a mirror or our own infrastructure. But if we would have similar issues on our own server, we probably would not be prepared for it as well as GitHub is
So it's a bit of a pickle

hmm

I discussed this briefly in the JavaScript room on SO today and people basically told me to not host critical shit on GitHub and mirror your dependencies
Which makes perfect sense to me
But doing so requires resources
And those really don't compare to paying $100 for a GitHub account
But, yeah, I guess there simply is no easy and cheap solution if you want quality

github is pretty damn close to being perfect with uptime, so don't blame them when China decides to be a dick

11:30 PM
@allquixotic I don't. But our clients don't care about that and they don't understand it either. They only understand that we're not able to deploy updates for their service
We're always transparent about stuff like this, but, in the end, they don't care. They want the service they paid for and I don't think they're wrong
But there is one thing I really like. The more we grow, the easier it is to take care of last years problems. But todays problems get harder all the time
Good times! :D
