12:00 AM
woof
Nice!
I think I have one of the hoodies from when they had a store. Its useful ;p

Is this site more generous with the votes than SO is?

Nope
SO has MUCH more volume

Like as in average votes/post.

and eh, I've gotten and am keeping the review queue under 1K ;)

@Undo SO gets an enormous amount of eyes on each question; even poor questions get found in google searches while coding and people will toss in random upvotes... not so much on SU
if you want votes on SU you ask questions starting with "Why" and the entire world clicks them and the first answer gets rep-capped
on SO if you want votes you ask questions that every single n00b ever will have

12:13 AM
rofl
true

like "how do I update my git clone checkout?"

lol
Or ask questions about wierd obscure hardware

Like toasters?

especially toasters.

kerosene-powered cheese graters are better

12:14 AM
Apparently my 13w3 cable got no attention :/

"Why does my toaster always burn bread when left unattended?"

(Of course I PRIMARILY posted that here so I know where to find the damned dip switch chart)
@allquixotic: kerosene? JET POWERED CHEESE GRATER

Anyway, this place can't be more strict than SR ;)

@Undo come on, you can do better than that: "Why does httpd always crash when I toast bagels?"

Hey, I've been looking for a way to repro Apache randomly crashing!

12:17 AM
blind luck :P
are you toasting bagels when it does?

I don't know, never looked for a connection there.
Apache has crashed twice and I've toasted bagels twice, so...

screen -mdS apache gdb --args apache2 etc (with symbols) should let you bt full and look at the stack to figure out the immediate cause at least

huh, good to know

then screen -rS apache once it crashes

it hasn't done it in a while, though. I think because I haven't toasted bagels in like two years.

12:21 AM
I am really hating my computer right now

that's unfortunate

Your sad face is very relevant right now. :P
At least it's not BSOD's.

eh
My old system is occationally refusing to come out of sleep hibernation

12:57 AM
anyone alive now ;p

me
but I'm probably not going to be of much help ;)

ive been searching the stackexchange section for somewhere to ask about electrical issues
anyone have any suggestions

perhaps?
(read their on-topic page first)

na, my questions are regarding electrical lighting
those guys are too elite for my simple questions

Home Improvement
2
maybe?

1:03 AM
@Undo looks plausible

yea prob
thanks undo

yw

any of you guys know much about electrical and/or lighting?

nope

@Sickest very little; however, I don't mean for this to be construed as offensive, but I've been dying for a chance to use this little command:
!!tell 17776650 bespecific

1:04 AM
@Sickest Please don't ask if anyone knows about X; rather than asking a general question that almost anyone could say yes to in some respect, simply ask your actual question. If anyone knows the answer or can provide some insight, they will. If they don't, they won't.

heh
got that out of your system?

better yet, if Home Improvement has a chatroom on chat.stackexchange.com, if you ask them there your specific question, they might ask you to post it on the Q&A, or help you directly
and yeah, I totally got that out of my system ;p

most chatrooms on every SU page is normally dead, except the major sites

this room is usually hopping during the weekdays
shows you what we do at work

yea, no joke, ha

1:06 AM
hey, what's the worst that can happen if you ask your question on diy.SE? they'll close the question :P which is hardly the worst thing that's ever happened to a person

anyway, im on a mission to convert the entire house to LED lighting instead of the halogen lighting

oh cool
we've been phasing in LEDs as the halogens burn out

and the conversation between the old units to the new LEd
yea, well i can't do phasing, certain parts of the house have to be done all at once, otherwise it will look stupid
what brand have you been using quix?

LED lights are super expensive. if you're on a tight budget, it might be more economical to get a small loan to buy them and replace all the house's lights at once, and start saving the electricity by not using halogens or incandescents; then pay off the loan with your savings
oh. we use LED lights from Toshiba, if I recall correctly

no money is not an issue really

1:08 AM
Toshiba makes lots of high-tech products with fairly good quality :)

the issue is making sure i can get the right stuff
for example, what did you do when it came to 3 way lighting lamps?

one of the cool things about Toshiba's LEDs is that you can get ones with dimmer switches. (for hallway lights, we use dimmers)

almost all the brands have dimmer's now

3-way lighting lamps? I'm not sure what those are off-hand

the lamps that you turn the switch 3 times and it goes on low med or high brightness
have u seen those?
50w/100w/150w

1:10 AM
OH. yeah, I've heard of that. we don't have the electrical or switch wiring supporting that functionality
I'm pretty sure they wouldn't actually consume 50W/100W/150W as LEDs, though, unless you want to be blinded by the light :P

the lamp is the thing that supports it actually

...since LEDs are much brighter per watt than incandescents

let me ask you, are you buying the soft lighting or the Natural lighting?

we primarily buy the soft lighting, but we've tried both. I don't remember which term applies to which type of lighting, but what we ended up preferring is the ones that produce colors much closer to incandescent light bulbs.
the alternative is an extremely bright white light, which feels like someone put your LED HDTV on highest brightness, displayed a full-screen solid white background and inserted the entire light into your eye's retina :)

i really want to see how that natural lighting looks, but if we use those we have we do any actual phasing, has to be done all at once
lol, yea
we can't do*

1:14 AM
homedepot.com/p/… <--- this is a typical-priced 5-pack of 3-ways. available at Home Depot, so not all that uncommon
just in case you were doubting whether the 3-way LEDs exist

no, i've seen them at home depot, literally today actually
but mine are 50/100/150
i dont know if 30/60/100 will work for me

around 20 dollars per bulb is pretty much the going rate, by the way... if you find them cheaper, be happy... if they're more expensive, could be a quality differentiator, or just getting jipped :P

yea, they are making a killing off this stuff
but it supposedly last way longer so
lasts*

I don't have a problem with them making a killing as long as they last as long as advertised and save energy :)
my bathroom still has halogens CFLs that I'm trying to kill; once they finally die or gets down to just 1 bulb (out of a 4 bulb array) I'll replace em with LEDs
get up in morning -> turn on lights in bathroom -> listen to BBBBBBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!! for 5 minutes
gotta love halogens CFLs

yea, that buzz sound is scary man

1 hour later…
2:39 AM
We have drop in replacements for our circular fluorescents
And generally we like insanely bright

4:06 AM
@HackToHell :)

Finally, an ISP has erected poles for it's optical fibre cables <3
Gonna switch !
Faster Internet ftw

4:50 AM
0_0
Welcome to the 21th century!
Which ISP?
I think I can get the review queue to under 900 today

@JourneymanGeek Reliance

For 700 INR I get 2 Mbps without a FUP <3
Currently for 900 INR I get 1 Mbps until 6 gigs and 512 kbps after that ;p

5:10 AM
oh and I ended up applying for that microsoft student partners thingy ;p
Got jelly when a gal from my class wrote an app :P

5:23 AM
;p

2 hours later…
7:26 AM
So I might be able to pick up a Sony PVM Trinitron for free
In the smash bros scene these CRTs are hailed (I don't know the tech behind it)

If the TV has inputs like in this image warehousesale.webtastictv.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/…

CRTs are gloriously flawed

@JourneymanGeek Don't laugh at me ;)
Like I said, I'm not familiar with the machinery but I can tell that the image is way faster than on an LCD

No no. Its a bit like vinyl

7:28 AM
Meaning?

You have very good refresh rates since you need it for the way CRTs work
And scanlines are desirable for old school gaming

What are some of their flaws?

Low resolution
Slightly fragile but often fixable.
Also they literally create am image line by line so you need a high refresh rate to mitigate flickering

But the high refresh rate is the only matter of importance! Haha

7:33 AM
It is truthfully very nice to play on them

Its probably gonna rock for old school console gaming

But I hear your points of course

No composite in tho? I think most older consoles do rf

That's what I came here to ask

Ahh. Y/C is svideo

7:35 AM
So it has the Y/C in which can be covered by this adapter amazon.com/Wii-AV-S-Video-Cable-Packaging-Nintendo/dp/…

Which is more common

Yeah, so my research has indicated
But how do I reconcile the audio feed?

There's rca to 3.5 mm cables. May need a coupler of some sort

7:38 AM
prefer the wire style, it sticks out of the jack less, so it is less likely to cause damage when bumped.

@Psycogeek You mean for that audio adapter?

yea, or for any adaption for that matter that ends up being long out of a jack.

Hm, have a link?

the radio shack carries em.
what country are you in ?

the states

7:41 AM
if you want more CRTs i have load of them :-)
I have some of the bestest 19" computer monitors, obsoleted due to power consumption and 3/4 aspect ratio.

Oh really??
I'm very interested ;)

problem is they weigh so much a person would want to drive by to pick them up :-) but i still have the boxes, shipping though is rediculous.

I know, that's actually quite the issue
19" is a pretty decent size for my use case too
Smaller is a bit better because there's somewhat of an emphasis on portability
But at least you're not talking about the ~32" monsters

If anyone wants them just pay for shipping, the item itself is free.

Damn, what kind of weight are we talking?

7:46 AM
I donno, one person carry :-)
probably about 30#
maybe it says on the box.

I take it you're not in the SoCal area?

i am in livermore, east bay of SF.

Hm, driving would probably be cheaper? ;)

one (my fav) is an IIyama $$$ monitor, very clear and sharp and none of that Auto stuff. one is a pukesonic of the something Grid style, which was supposed to make it "better" but lots of adjusting to make it right.

What kind of i/o do these have usually?

7:52 AM
Probably VGA

they were both "top of the line" but specific to the style i wanted. no speaker inbuilt, and VGA wires locked in. (let me check that again)

Heh, I prefer everything to be removable.
Though my most recent screen takes that to the extreme.

yea they are vga, making them even more obsolete here.

Thanks for the offer though @Psycogeek you'll be in my thoughts
And how does my crazy adapter scheme sound for that one trinitron pvm?
It's a bit of a drive for me to pick that one up so I'd hate to not have a vetted cable plan

@Qcom: Sounds almost workable to me, but I'd confirm what it is, and what port it has, and have a chat with the last owner ;p
lol
true, I'm almost entirely on HDMI and DVI at the moment

7:57 AM
What is the box your connecting it to?

@JourneymanGeek Haha that sounds like a plan
And it's one of these bad boys warehousesale.webtastictv.com/product/…

@Qcom: First hand knowledge is free

@Qcom yea i saw that S-Video mono aido passthrough , looks like a "pro" video monitor. so what is the console that is to be plugged?

@JourneymanGeek Thanks for sharing :)

Yea i got a 14" one of themm sony pro monitors, also hooks up to RGB.

8:00 AM
It'll either be a Wii or GameCube

Thing costs $1400 new, today it is worth -25$

probably a Wii at first
Oh goodness that depreciation

dont those devices have an S-video output ? or only component video & vga?

@Qcom: meh, they arn't worth much UNLESS you have a use for one
I have a system that probably cost as much as a small car when it was new sitting around gathering dust ;p

8:01 AM
@Psycogeek I think it's only component
@JourneymanGeek You mean like Smash Bros? Ha

hm
wait
@Qcom: chances are that's mono audio

Does that defeat the audio coupler idea?

kinda sorta
There's a different cable for that
but I'd suggest just using something else for sound

Something else meaning not the CRT? lol

yea definately any sort of cheap powered speakers are better than most in-built speakers, and it is certannly mono there.

8:06 AM
yup
The onboard speakers are probably not half bad

If I was crazy enough to want to pipe sound to that thing, what is the required adapter even called? lol

but you'll likely do well to plug it into... well anything else

looks like the WII (at least the first version) is video only, not making use of the seperated croma-luma. like a VCR. which is really funny, because (i found out) that ALL this stuff is processed internally as seperated, it is only crashed together to make it simple to connect with one wire.
There is no advantage to crashing a S-Video together into a composite video, so for the WII item it would be just as good to connect up just to the video and not use the S-video (so called YC)

I guess something with 2 phono ins and one phono out would work

Bob
@Zirak Sleepy. But that might be because I'm asleep :P

8:11 AM
Without S-Video the horizontal resolution will be some limited, and color will not be as crispo, so the advantages of a monitor like that are somewhat lost.

Bob
I'll have to go look at that if/when I remember. I'm a tad busy right now.

@Psycogeek What is the WII item of which you speak?

For the WII •You can purchase component (five-pronged) cables to connect the Wii to your TV for slightly better picture quality. Your TV will need to support component connections.
Component they are talking about is the kind like on a DVD , Pb-Y-C (or whatever) , while S-video is "components" it is not the 3 wire connecting one.

One of my RAID's hadr drives has died in my NAS. So, I took it out, put it into my PC, and Windows Explorer shows 3 disks (3 drive letters for the 1 hard drive) but all of them have to be formatted before they can be used? Right click -> Properites shows 0b are used on all disks. So, I put the other disc into my machine, Windows does not detect it all all. Into CMD, -> diskpart and then list disk. It shows the other disk, but also at 0bytes.... Any one expereined this before
Why can't either hard drive be read in Windows despite being OK in my QNAP Nas storage?

This component en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YPbPr ( i knew i couldnt spell it right:-) with that as the output and an analog (or digital) monitor supporting the 3 wire component it would be "better" than hooking it up with video on that sony monitor.
For the WII item.

8:18 AM
Herp I think I failed to parse your stylization
WII = Wii
Behold the power of marketing

connecting via the YPbPr thing would deliver analog video somewhat like VGA does, within the resolution of the SD (type) monitor it would be clearest.
and have the highest delivered resolution for the capabilities of both units, when it is connecting to a analog TV thing, and VGA is not available.

@Psycogeek The goal though is to use a display that has the highest refresh rate
Not the one that looks the best

that monitor has no better refresh rate , it is interlaced locked to 30frame 60Feilds kind NTSC video. (50 for pal)

@Psycogeek Hm, I've also heard that
Then why the hell does it play so much faster? lol
There's a noticeable difference between CRT (with RCA) and LCD (with component like you mentioned)

@Qcom A sony monitor CAN have some awesome phosphors though, and a clear picture, but like i said you should veryify the connection type they are thrilled with.
Phosphors on CRTs came in about 3 speeds, some so "fast" that the picture was flickery as the scan (the lines are drawn). basically to fast for the style of display, noticed by a eye wearing view, much like a florescent.
Sony had a tendancy to have "slower" phosphors with a longer on-time and a slower decay rate, so the scan would be very still picture looking to the eyes.

8:31 AM
Damn thanks @Psycogeek for all this information :)

Another reason they can be thrilled with a "pro" or pro line monitor is because they were $1400 :-0 not some cheap tv, they are perfectaly calibrated, all the 3 colors line up across the whole. and usually the picture looked great (also) because the monitors were smaller , so the resolution didnt hurt so much.
most of the "pros" though would also be hooking them up with some sort of component connection like S or 3wire or RGB (which was VGA with 3 BNC connections)

@Psycogeek Would s-video not be optimal?

s-video was capable of up to ~400 lines horizontal, because of seperating the B/W from the color that is slopped on top of it.
regular composite video ~320 max and messy because it is shoved down the same line.

'Tis an improvement over the traditional RCA then right?

much and much, even for VCR playing.

8:39 AM
Okay sweet

so your device (the box to plug in) has to somehow support that.

How does this little package look then? amazon.com/Wii-AV-S-Video-Cable-Packaging-Nintendo/dp/…

ahh
that'll do it.

Niiice
And as for the audio we pretty much covered that
If I went down the path of trying to feed it to the onboard speakers, I'd just need to convert the red/white audio to a single mono, correct?

@Qcom yea speaker a cheap y-adapter (again i use wired.
you can slap a stereo signal together and feed it to a mono input and it will "work"

8:43 AM
By "work" do you mean sound crappy? lol

it just wont be stereo. if one of them is out of phase it will be really weird low, but that is a rare thing and unnessisary to discuss.

1) Make a backup
2) Why even try to fix that in the PC, replace the broken disk and let the NAS to the resync.
But if you want to do it on the PC:
First check the partition formats. (0x0b is FAT32 in ancient CHS addressing)
Those might contain the OS for the NAS, the page partition (swap) for the NAS and actual data partitions (which with 3 partitions would be 1 big data volume)

@Psycogeek Alright then. Do you think the endeavor is worth it?
I've heard quite good things about Trinitrons

@Qcom: that thing isn't a normal TV, it was designed to make TV ;p

My IIyama trinotor monitor (17 inch, 1400 guilders)( was pretty nice. :)

8:48 AM
so, built like a brick shithouse, but quirky.

@Qcom as worth it as it would be to have a 3wire component good quality tv. but you also said to make it smaller, so that is one of the best ways .

@JourneymanGeek That's not really a problem, is it? lol

naw, but it explains some of the oddness
like mono in

Meaning a big 25" TV hooked up with Better connection would be as usable

@Psycogeek Yeah the 13" form factor is pretty nice for portability
@JourneymanGeek Does that also explain the Line A and B craziness?

8:52 AM
Most of the Wii usage i see is not like sitting in front of a computer monitor sized thing. they are dancing around, slinging shit about and all kinds of activities that seemed like it would work better with the living room tv, soo It must be for a specific game type/style to want it small?

@Psycogeek Hahaha you're exactly right
You ever heard of smash bros?

I am youtubing it now, to see.

2D fighter with an all-star cast of nintendo characters
Not the same kind of fighter as Tekken/Marvel/etc.
It uses a weird percentage and knock-off-the-stage gameplay mechanic

ahh i see why the need for refresh rate , my eyes.

Specifically melee smash bros
Since it has quite a healthy competitive scene
And thus the emphasis on refresh rate

8:58 AM
put that up on yusatube at 24fps :-)

Haha can youtube play videos at 60fps?

they are claiming it possible, youtube.com/results?search_query=60fps I shall see if they really got it by downloading it and checking the file.
well the first one NOT it is 30
fail x2 , you would think they would check to see :-( before they title it like that.

9:14 AM
I laugh all of these misleading titles

the one for the "phones" 3gp was only 10fps
so now i have to check the whole rack of them to see if there exists any format that they did

I apologize for sending you on this mission

okkay i searched instead. only for the HTML5 do they have the possibility for 60fps

Ah I seem to remember that being the case

the webm VP8&VP9 type

9:24 AM
@Qcom I have no idea what that is ;p

someone mentioned that a speed video looked "faster" when they could see all the frames. guess we really are missing out on the Acition of movies, if all we get is a blur of movements.

Haha I don't know why but I guess you can have two input feeds

@Qcom to switch between 2 source devices.

ok guess that VP8 with the title "true 60fps" was really 60fps, because mediainfo says it is 1,000,000 FPS :-)

9:27 AM
"Unless you have a high-end monitor, such as a Sony PVM, you may not even notice the difference.""
Boom, totally worth this whole madness haha
Thanks for the reference
@Psycogeek And I guess that's the same as most modern TVs today then

youtube.com/watch?v=JiMq-AVgX-w <-- link to a small sample video that is actually 60fps

@Qcom: what little I know of high end CRTs is entirely from there ;p

@Qcom depends. CRT tvs were 30FPS 60 interlaced feilds per second , so 1/2 the pic was updating at 60. most LCDs though show as "progressive" even though in the US they are still spitting out interlaced video.
So the usual cheap LCD tv with minimal display engine would jut slap the feilds together and display a 30fps progressive. a High end one not only claiming (because lots claim) but actually doing it could display 2 progressive frames after assembling the interlaced scan.
Which has nothing to do with "monitors" of the lcd variety from a computer, because it is not interlaced. So a computer pumping out 60FPS is whole "progressive" like frames.
Somewhere in here i should have mentioned that TV broadcasts are still using the old interlace thing going out, even after the switch to digital, even though most people are watching it in progressive. So it is not very well known (and a pain in the ass to find out) that method is still used.
Which brings up how many people are using a HDMI connecting tv for the computer , having the computer for games set to 60FPS (output out of the video card) and do not even know if the TV is still doing 30.
And has nothing to do with CRTs for computer monitors, because they also (the computer being the output) were not interlace. Very few computer monitors in existance were ever interlace.

9:53 AM
@Psycogeek I think the article @JourneymanGeek linked is a prerequisite for reading your essay :)

i think putting it in a better order would have helped.
or we just admit that it is all bullshoot until you prove it with a high speed camera :-)

How did you like the videos of smash by the way?

Well. Modern systems don't need as high a refresh rate for usability
and they don't deal with lower resolution well

@Qcom like arcade.

10:05 AM
@Psycogeek The competitive side of the game is pretty interesting

@Qcom but the Wii is probably not archaic 240res, it is likely to be standard 480 type of res picture, so some of it does not apply?
like the output of a dvd player.

@Psycogeek Yeah the Wii is a pretty modern system

10:19 AM
@Qcom did you buy that sony yet? because i have a pro sony monitor with RGB input even (although that wont help) free for the shipping.

@Psycogeek I have not
I think it'd be unwise to contact the seller at 3 am

i just checked it does not have component, so that would have been the next best connection method when there is no VGA or RGb
it does have S and regular video

What model number is the Sony?

you see in california they charge me $15 & 25$ to throw them out.
but i can send them to electronics recycler.

And S video is what I was planning on using for that Trinitron

10:24 AM
PVM-1341

13" too huh?

it looks just like (is same) as this thing ebay.com/itm/…
i always thought it was 14 big bezels on the things, and they are not lightweight , it is "pro" so it is somewhat beastly.

So it's fairly similar to the one I linked

@Qcom well not really :-) this one is "better" it would hook up to the amiga computer in RGB, because amiga was still stuck in interlace.
it has much more connection stuff, which means it also uses more power

Yeah the buttons on that thing are fairly extensive

10:31 AM
but you see it doesnt hook up to a normal computer (that i know of) because it is interlaced, not designed for a computer.
so even though it has digital and analog RGB , it wont do like 1280x768 computer res.

It'd be pretty great for my use case I imagine
Although there's still the audio to work out of course

for many different devices , it would be best if you find out what thier Max possible connection type would be. AKA if i had a game console that would do 60 high res VGA , i would far rather have a computer monitor, even if it was CRT.
many consoles will hook to the TV, but modernly (new word:-) will also do rgb or hdmi.

I think the best the Wii can do is a component cable

Yes it seems to be all analog.
but i dont have one. it is weird because it is not that old?

Is what weird?

10:39 AM
I think they were made for a bit after CRTs went obsolete

the adapters they are selling for Wii to hook to VGA seem to be nothing more than messy analog , to many people say it looks worse than the RCA video type connection.
@Qcom weird because they are "computers" and RGB had been out for quite some time. and many of the other consoles connect to other than TVs dont they?

@Psycogeek Honestly I almost always either use the composite/component or HDMI from gaming systems
If there's a VGA option on other consoles I just haven't taken notice
I wouldn't be surprised that Nintendo's line of consoles has omitted them though
Since they're always meant to be played on a TV

@Qcom well take the 3 wire component, it is capable (the wiring and method) of 1200 hor res.
that doesnt mean the device or the tv are capable.
