12:02 AM
ugh.
That turtle thing is gnarly and kinda dumb

Bob
@JourneymanGeek so... I guess I shouldn't click? :\

@Bob: Honestly the "Can't afford to bring the turtle to the vet" is slightly more distressing to me than the injury, which is bad but not THAT bad

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ouch... looks pretty bad :(
not that I know anything about turtle anatomy, but it does seem a bit too solid... looks a bit like fat, actually. and that's bad.

If you have a pet, its your responsibility. Its not like the poor thing can go to the vet itself, and get itself patched up

12:42 AM

@JourneymanGeek Honestly, if there's a pet emergency and you tell the vet you can't afford to pay for it I'm sure they'll be understanding about it.

@MichaelFrank: I suppose!

"Hey my turtle is inside out, but I can't pay. Help me?"

"LOLNO"

Luckily we've never had to find out

^ is not how I expect most Vets to respond.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, the only pets I've had that have had accidents wouldn't have made it to the vet. :(
Mum ran over one cat, and the other got mauled by the neighbours dog.

The one time we needed a vet for something urgent was the time the roomie had tick fever

1:03 AM
grr
I can't find the vesa mount for the brix :/

brix?

@MichaelFrank: gigabyte "NUC"

•VESA mounting bracket (75 x 75mm + 100 x 100mm)
Or do you mean that you had one.. and now you can't find it? :P

The latter
hence me saying "The" rather than "A"

Just use tape.

1:07 AM
Oh
I want to use it as a template to build a vesa compatible mounting plate for something else

1:23 AM
(which isn't actually going to need to be vesa compatible, but shhh)
Done.
I'll pick up some M8 bolts/screws next time I'm at the hardware shop

1:46 AM
Apparently the 'standard' MDF blocks I get at daiso are perfect for >110 pound vesa mounts

1 hour later…
@JourneymanGeek Very nice.

I'm probably using it as a base for a small LCD screen
and that will likely involve double sided tape ;p
and/or magnets

so tired today -_-

1 hour later…
4:23 AM
ugh.. today has been so unproductive.

5:22 AM
hm
superuser.com/q/805401/10165 original question is +1 . OP calling himself an idiot is +3.
And I'm confused to how it even worked.

6:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek just saw your youtube uploaded video of the SGI Octane booting up, that's crazy how long it takes @_@

@allquixotic: I still have the system, I haven't actually booted it since then

lol since 2008? wow

I have a converter cable and all, just never got around to seeing if it runs
yeah ;p
The monitor blew up

@_@

and well
moving it around is a bear
its like 20 kg or so

6:21 AM
My mom wanted to throw it out XD
But I refuse to, and its too heavy for my dad to carry
I might try to boot it up when I order/get my little screen, since I do believe it can emulate a lower res, badly
And you got me watching a teardown ;p
though his is in better condition than mine
holy shit those things are beautiful inside
And a LOT of heatsinks and no fans 0_0

Bob
6:55 AM
ugh
javascript makes me want to cry -_-

:/
while they were a bit naff, old computers are just so much cooler in some ways.

2 hours later…
8:49 AM
@Bob What are you scripting?

Bob
9:00 AM
@OliverSalzburg something for work involving screenshots, node-webkit and tears of frustration. mostly the latter.
and that's pretty much because JS is single-threaded with no way to delay execution, and I need to wait for something to render before screenshotting in multiple nested loops and recursion

@Bob Promises

...is the name of the technology to look into

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I was thinking that, but apparently that requires another library?

@Bob Yes, it does.

Bob
9:08 AM
I'm quite familiar with the promise pattern, considering .NET asyncs/TPL :P

Ah, I see

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Yea, I didn't really want to bring in yet another library at this time.
Even worse, another pattern that'll only be used in one place and only by me... that's gonna go over well
But considering this cluttered mess, maybe that is a good idea to consider :P

Just run a check with setTimeout until you're done and forget about it ;D

Bob
9:26 AM
@OliverSalzburg the problem is I need to go render(n) => delay => screenshot => render(n+1) etc
and it's tabpanels within tabpanels within other components, so there's an outer recursive loop too
I have to make sure the next step doesn't process until after the delay
it's easy to delay => screenshot with setTimeout (or .defer, since I'm using ExtJS)
not as easy to make the render(n+1) happen after the delay, but doable
once you introduce the recursion... ow my brain
it's working now, just looks messy as fuck :P

3 hours later…
12:41 PM
That is an awesome name+avatar

Bob
12:54 PM
> i leave this blank for aesthetic reasons.
:D

> "Mm paul, dig in! Enjoy your eggs!"

"CAAAARL these aren't eggs! What the hell are they carl!?"

"Well, they're not melted children, that's for sure"

and now the wait

2:28 PM
@Bob Waiting for what?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Delivery.
At least half a month...

Ah, I see

Bob
it's the one @JourneymanGeek recommended :P

Much like @OliverSalzburg's speakers, its what I'd get ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh, what's his speakers? :P

2:31 PM
@Bob: M audio AV30 I think
based on wirecutter's recommendations ;p

Bob
O_O

lol
I'm getting a pair eventually.

3:00 PM
I'm looking for a blender

No matter which one you look at, there's some Amazon review telling you that it's shit

Most of my experience with those are with wierd indian brands

I should just get a Blendtec

Bob
3:12 PM
@OliverSalzburg But will it blend?
Hm. I wonder if they ever did blend-ception.

Erm wtf, it costs 540€ (709USD, 759AUD)

1 hour later…
4:43 PM
Poor Kitten

4:58 PM
@HackToHell poor? he seems happy
@JourneymanGeek nice lol

@allquixotic He seems confused after a while
And how the bloody hell did OP get a laser on his head !!

@HackToHell tape

@allquixotic I see that ;p
It's just cats don't like anything on them

this cat seemed more preoccupied with chasing the laser than the tape on his head

I bet the cat gets quite stressed after a while

5:07 PM
And starts scratching people laughing at it...

gender-neutral pronouns are so weird.

5:23 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy when referring to an animal that clearly has a gender, yeah
it's even weird to native speakers
but I don't know if that cat is male or female
I'm more concerned with the fact that he had that on his cat's head for "over an hour", not that he did it in the first place.
15 minutes would be OK in my opinion
but after that the cat needs to chill out
if the cat still wants to play after 15 minutes you could hold the laser in your hand and let him/her chase it for a few more minutes

I didn't watch the video. I'm in haven't-sleep-well-for-a-week mode so I can't focus well on anything for more than a few seconds.
The video OP stated that he/she had the laser thing on the cat's head for over an hour?

yes
30 minutes would be my upper bound even for very energetic young kittens
15 minutes for most adult cats

For god's sake. Playing with a cat and watching it chase, say, a string of clothing like is a prey, and teasing said cat, is hilarious if it's for at most a couple minutes. An entire hour is cruelty.

6:21 PM
I am not that sure. I can no longer pick up my bluetooth keyboard (with build in laser pointer - possibly intended as a beamer/presentation gadget) without my cat insisting on hunting that little red dot.

everyone here but me owns a cat .____.

@ThatBrazilianGuy don't feel alone

6:43 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy No. We are owned by a cat.

7:21 PM
@allquixotic @Bob guys I have completed that cryptography course successfully. Thanks for the help you gave me for starting it :)

1 hour later…
8:27 PM
Hello everyone, I bought a new Mac today and want to install things in a more organized way. For example I am using the package manager Homebrew and some other package managers. Is it recommended to create a folder (i.e. "package managers") and simply add that folder to my path?

8:53 PM
@Sven we don't really do mac support here, but when it comes to questions like that, you pretty much go with what works or what seems most expedient to you; there's no "recommendation"
although I could warn you against having multiple separate package managers' packages being installed in the same prefix, since you could end up with conflicting libs

9:07 PM
Oh ok, thank you for your reply anyway!

9:28 PM
Morning all!

9:43 PM
heh... a work request just came in:
> Please create the following folder structure required for the CD transfer:
d:\skynet\data\cptydmp

2 hours later…
11:42 PM
@MichaelFrank ahh so that is how the end starts
engadget.com/2014/09/01/google-android-one-event-india Those words! They do not mean what you think it means!
@ThatBrazilianGuy not true
@Sven closer to "no one here right now owns a mac"
Though I suspect ~/package managers/<specific package manager>/ may reduce clobbering somewhat
Also consider /usr/local/

@JourneymanGeek I have a Mac

11:58 PM
@MichaelFrank: We don't explicitly unsupport macs tho. We just occationally crack jokes at its expense ;p
should be picking up the hard drive and keyboard/mouse for his brix today
