Can I have a 1/2 watt resistors immediately following a 1/8 watt?

thankya!
and it doesn't matter how they're soldered in, as long as the current goes through all 4 in some matter?

Shouldn't but depends on why you are mixing them

just to step 19v down to run 2 LEDs

Ahh. Then not really imo

1:34 AM
thankya :)

Hm. That reminds me. I still have that monitor I was fixing
(Replaced most of the caps. Need to replace more :p

1:50 AM
I got a monitor a few months ago that wouldn't turn on, replaced the caps, nice new monitor

2:41 AM
While this may or may not be technically possible, it is not legally possible without violating the copyright license of Apple Mac OS X. If you violate the copyright license of a piece of software, you no longer have any right to possess or use that software, or you are breaking international law. This is a serious crime in many countries and is definitely, unambiguously, illegal in the country in which StackExchange operates, the USA. There is no way to do this that is legal without purchasing an actual Mac -- the hardware -- from Apple. — allquixotic 42 mins ago

3:08 AM
@allquixotic: I'm closing it as unclear what you're asking. Its not a great question, shows no research effort, and is less controversial for me than to close as hackintosh

3:39 AM
Ugh... lost my debit card while we were out :<

Bob
@MichaelFrank :O

I think we need a canonical "Can I upgrade my laptop processor" question

@Bob Yea, I already have.

Bob
3:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek 1. check if BGA. 2. if answer to (1) is yes, then no. 3. goto 1

lol
Not counting firmware support, and so on

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, the vast majority of laptops are BGA
still a few PGAs floating around, but not much
and good luck finding a replacement CPU

4:29 AM
@Bob precisely why a canonical question would be useful

4:39 AM
@ekaj I replaced about half a dozen caps I think, currently I think the backlight inverter related bits a borked
Its not the soldering that's the pain, its cracking open the case

5:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek thanks

5:39 AM
Hi
can anyboby look into this and help me superuser.com/questions/805314/…
No body can help me
??

@Danny This chat isn't a place to draw attention to your questions. by asking on the main site, you've already done the right thing. now you just sit back and wait for comments/answers. Also, we aren't all just sitting here chomping at the bit for you to say something. From the time you said "Hi" until "??", only 3 minutes passed. It's quite possible (probable, even) that no one was looking at chat at that time.

5:58 AM
Yeah, I was paws deep inside an old screen ;p
@Danny: some suggestions "I used" not I user and link the dodgy third party mods you used so people have a better idea how badly you've messed up your system

In addition, least in this chatroom, its generally considered impolite to walk in and simply link a question unless its awesomely interesting

6:18 AM
I told my Dad he must have a PICNIC error with his new monitor.. He wasn't too impressed. haha

@MichaelFrank: oh this is an old model, seriously dodgy thing
I replaced most of the caps, backlight goes off after a few seconds and I have no clue how to troubleshoot from there

Yeah, I've got a couple monitors with 2sec to black issues.
Need to get around to replacing the caps.

this has most of its caps replaced
I have no idea what's borked now
looks interesting

6:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yea, badcaps.net is a pretty comprehensive website.,

@MichaelFrank: those are things I can and haven't checked yet ;p

6:58 AM
Something tells me I need to write off that drive

7:15 AM
What's the super sensitive information you have in it :P

@HackToHell: Used to have a copy of ubuntu installed ;p
Which I suspect is why it failed

8:08 AM
ooh. windows now sees the drive as having no storage

8:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek But why shred it?
This OAuth is driving me nuts :|

8:42 AM
@HackToHell it is a good way to rule out fs issues. Windows thought the drive was write protected before

9:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh ok

9:48 AM
Besides. shred is cool

Q: No RAM Operating System?

VusPThis gets awkward but please bear. Is there an OS which can be used without a RAM? The kind I can create a bootable pendrive from and use it in the computer. This gets awkward since boot is essentially loading OS in RAM. I have an old laptop which powers up but does not boot . The screen stays ...

Q: How do I distribute a large download over multiple computers?

MeysamI need to download a large file (1GB). I also have access to multiple computers running Linux, but each is limited to a 50kB/s download speed by an admin policy. How do I distribute downloading this file on several computers and merge them after all segments have been downloaded, so that I can r...

this is REALLY ugly

11:47 AM
ugh... this guy's name is XPhorskinX. I bet he's going to be toxic -_-

12:11 PM
Why people are so concerned about BPA-free products?

omg the most AMAZING shirt is on TeeFury today! :D
@Boris_yo 'cause constant exposure to BPA is sorta bad for you long term.

Great, now I waited for an eternity for this Windows installation to complete, it reboots a couple of times, goes to a "Whoops an error occurred" screen and then restores Windows 7 and tells me that the installation failed
Now what?
And wtf is this?
Weird, clicking the Restart button in Chrome doesn't do anything ;P

Ahh, you upgrading?
@OliverSalzburg yea, it does this because Chrome is your default browser. :P
It would work correctly if IE was.

@MichaelFrank It seems like that would be something that could be avoided

@OliverSalzburg you have a large screen o0

12:23 PM
@OliverSalzburg Yea, except IE

Bob
@OliverSalzburg open the install logs
I had a bsod minidump in there :\

@Bob eww :P

I just started the setup again and it downloaded updates for the installer
Also, I had pending reboots because I installed software before the upgrade process
I'll just go for another try

You've still got the joy of the 3.5GB update to Win8.1 @OliverSalzburg

I currently have the joy of re-downloading 8 :P

12:27 PM
At 50 Mbps ? :P

I must admit the only reason I have Win8 was because of the £15 upgrade offer Microsoft did...

I would upgrade to Windows 8 anyday for that task manager

@Mokubai This is why I upgraded. :P
But I really enjoy using 8.1 now.
I hardly ever use the Start Menu though :P

Aye, I pinned most things I use regularly, and the rest are desktop shortcuts
That start menu can suck it until I get a Win8 tablet or touchscreen

I keep forgetting to install the Stardock apps that I bought...

12:31 PM
@HackToHell The copy dialog is pretty sweet too

Rain meter ftw

Start8 and ModernMix

@Mokubai Yeah, Tera Copy needs graphz.

Bob
@MichaelFrank it's a pain in the arse to try to find a program folder
winkey+type-to-search works well enough for most things

@HackToHell 100 in theory. But this download takes forever. If it even is a download, I have no idea what this installer is doing the whole time

12:33 PM
@Bob I found that the start search menu is worse than in 8.

Bob
@MichaelFrank eh... I still like the win7 implementation most
win8 had an annoying separation of 'apps' and 'settings'

@OliverSalzburg probably downloading a stupid encrypted version and then decrypting it using a single thread

Bob
win8.1 doesn't always select the first result, so it launches that stupid search app

8.1 searches the internet as well :/

Like the stupid dream spark down loader.

Bob
12:35 PM
@HackToHell 1. multithreaded decryption isn't a thing, 2. if decryption is the bottleneck you need a new computer (or better algorithm)

@Bob It isn't ? :O

@MichaelFrank "Stated another way, an average adult consumer would have to ingest more than 230 kilograms (or about 500 pounds) of canned food and beverages every day for an entire lifetime to exceed the safe level of BPA set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency."

Bob
@HackToHell depends which encryption mode you use, but the most popular one (CBC) tends to require the result of the previous block

@OliverSalzburg Can't you do the download to iso and burn to USB? That way you at least have the setup files...

@Boris_yo Then it's just fear of a buzzword.

12:37 PM
@Mokubai I guess I should do that, yes

@MichaelFrank I spent 15 minutes to understand that people believe every picture they see on Facebook.

Bob
there is CTR mode, but I don't think it's that commonly used yet
then again, I'm not a cryptographer :P

On Facebook: "Did you know that continuous exposure to BPA is gonna kill you?"

Instant belief!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek you know a good budget USB DAC?

People cannot believe in Bible yet they believe everything they see on Facebook...

-.-

Bob
12:39 PM
I'm getting really tired of resetting Beats' sabotage :\

@Bob You bought Dre's Beats headphones?

@Bob Sabotage?

@Bob HP Laptop?
@Bob Check out Massdrop, they often have good USB DACs.

Bob
@MichaelFrank yea :(
@OliverSalzburg ever since I disabled the main program, it resets my audio drivers' treble and bass controls to stupid values on every boot
ranted about it a few times here before

@Bob Pretty sure it's cause you have your settings wrong.

Bob
12:43 PM
@MichaelFrank oh? care to point out where it's wrong?

@Bob Your bass isn't bassy enough... and the treble is obviously set wrong. Beats are a marvel of audio engineering.

Bob
. I will assume sarcasm.

I mean, have you seen that flat cable?
Oh yea.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Rather on the pricey side, though :P
"budget" != "audiophile", usually

You're right. Most of the time they just have $200-300 DACs, but some times they have good budget models.

Q: Graphics card not under load when playing games

karidyasI just got a new computer with an i7 4790k and GTX 770, however am very disappointed with performance. I was getting bad framerates on League of Legends on Very High and just now I booted Mirror's Edge, an old-ass game, and it was running at a very low framerate on high settings. A friend suggest...

uhh....
The question seemed okay to start with, then that second paragraph.

Bob
12:52 PM
@MichaelFrank heh, it could work in some cases

is that software?

Bob
@MichaelFrank it's a driver but requires support from the mobo (firmware? hardware? idk)
@MichaelFrank looks like the new version might be purely software? shrug
I haven't looked at it in over a year

@Bob: meh. I do ok on a budget
I have a 199 dollar external soundcard I 'borrowed' from my dad, and a 45 dollar headphone amp
@Bob: define budget, and what's your needs?

@Bob "Virtu MVP 2.0 sports HyperFormance" headdesk

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ideally <$50, needs... better than laptop onboard, nothing to do with Beats :P

1:06 PM
tricky...
headphone or speaker out?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Headphone.
I mean, there's those $1-$2 off ebay, but they're not that great

hm. NWAVguy swears by a specific berenger model, but its shit with headphones.

Bob
then there's the $100+ ones marketed towards audiophiles
...nothing in the middle

yeah ;p

Bob
I don't really use speakers much :\

1:08 PM
OOH
Smsl fort
I have one of their amps, and they do crazy-decent shit at insane prices
(also, that model is hillariously small)
basically SMSL and fiio is who I'd go with for low cost audio gear, and the build quality on SMSL gear is insanely good.

Bob
hm
@JourneymanGeek it looks funny :P

@Bob: Its minimalist

Bob
@JourneymanGeek any specific recs on the fiio side?
nothing smsl local :\

@Bob: I haven't gotten anything from them since the e3
and SMSL is one of those companies you end up getting stuff off from ebay or dx

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's an amp, yea?

1:15 PM
hm, fiio went fancypants :/
@Bob: TINY amp
you'd hate it, it bass boosts ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't necessarily mind/hate that
it's just Beats that I hate :P

though I had a SPECIFIC pair of headphones that were bassy farty things it improved....

Bob
and a good part of that is on principle
sure, maybe I could deal with the Beats sabotage by just enabling it... but hell no

Okay, that failed again. @Bob do you know where those install logs are located?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I completely forgot D:

1:17 PM
;p
I can't think of anything else off hand
my next audio upgrade is either going to be an ODAC or schitt.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg try $windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback

Bob
the minidumps are in a similar location
somewhere under the windows.~bt folder
huh, that article says under windir o.O

Bob
@MichaelFrank I was just reading that :P
@JourneymanGeek don't recognise any of those names :P

1:19 PM
Well, alrighty then!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek probably going with the fort then, thanks

@Bob: ODAC is supposedly the best DAC ever made, other than the benchmark (and that's pricy as hell). Schitt's an american company with really nice gear and a wierd sense of humour.

Bob
> I'm not sure about this model, but there are a lot of PCM2704 DACs on eBay if you look around for ~$15 all in. I bought one called the Muse Audio X5 and it's built well (all aluminum) and sounds pretty good for what it cost.
or maybe that

yeah.
and it probably looks less wierd ;p

Build a cmoybb! :D

Bob
1:22 PM
eh... costs slightly less, looks worse: ebay.com.au/itm/…

/me twaps @MichaelFrank upside the head
@MichaelFrank: thats an amp

Bob
I like the black

ooh, right.

no volume control tho ;p
Proper audiophiles love their knobs.

Bob
lol
diy case? :P
wait. is that a toslink port? o.O
...screw it, the smsl one is safer

Bob
wat
> This issue occurs when the largest volume on the disk is not assigned a drive letter. In this situation, the upgrade process temporarily assigns a drive letter to that volume and saves temporary files ($Windows.~BT)to the volume.
wtf

mmmmm... wut
> To resolve this issue, assign the largest volume a drive letter.

@Braiam lol

how about you don't touch the volume at all

Bob
1:36 PM
@MichaelFrank eh, what do you want to use it for?
Xeon 5130 is from the Core (not Core2) era... 2006

I've got no idea ^_^

Bob
That thing is probably going to suck down power without being too useful :\

I'll stick with my Lenovo M57 then :P

14 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
/me twaps @MichaelFrank upside the head
-_-

1:38 PM
So the Windows Update Readiness Tool is a 500+ MB download
Can't wait to see what it does

It tells you whether or not you are ready to upgrade.

Bob
O_O

Its not just for SE mods ;p
@Braiam better a twap than a rolled up newspaper.

1:57 PM
I've never seen that one before

@OliverSalzburg Get used to it. You'll see it every day time windows updates.

You might not believe it, but I actually have installed updates on Windows in the past

@OliverSalzburg :O

Dog to duck converting device: dx.com/p/…
^ You want? @JourneymanGeek

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You need a grumpy dog :P
2

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ok, ordered :P
Not too happy about the white cable though :\

Bob
3:09 PM

3:25 PM
After installing the Readiness Tool, the Windows 8 setup told me to uninstall my NIC driver and MSSE, so I did and installed again, still the same result, error 0xC000021A :P
I'm slowly losing interest in this upgrade...

@Bob I see.

4:38 PM
Interesting, .js file is opened like a html file
How does that addPixel() work ?
You have a var as a argument but never pass it but use it in a loop >.<

@HackToHell It's a folder with a index.html in it

Oh, the trailing /

hmm...is there an easy way to find out what registry keys are changed when I change a system preference? eg what key changes if I choose "use small icons" on the taskbar.

@tombull89 procmon ?

4:48 PM
@HackToHell I've tried that, but in the few seconds it takes to tick the box there's a few thousand changes made

@OliverSalzburg Ah, the JS beautifier left out some stuff

@tombull89 Apply filters

> function addPixel(init)
what does that init do ?

@Bob ^^ people do awesome and crazy things in KSP.

@OliverSalzburg I do, but evertyhing I changes comes under "Explorer.exe"

4:50 PM
Can't find a var with that name
@tombull89 operation is reg_xxx ?

although I guess it could come under HKEY_Users

@HackToHell It the optional, initial color of the pixel. During the initial canvas setup, it picks a random color, later I call addPixel(1) when one is faded out completely to add a new pixel that is almost black

@OliverSalzburg I think I get it now.

5:05 PM
Welp. Looks like I'm not playing Hitman Absolution any time soon. Damn game refuses to run at all.

Welp. Looks like I'm not playing Star Citizen any time soon. Damn game refuses to exist at all.

:P
Is it a Kickstarter game?

5:29 PM
@JourneymanGeek You knew this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsxQxS0AdBY&sns=em

And this? http://allhiphop.com/2014/05/13/dr-dres-beats-by-dre-cost-an-estimated-14-to-make/

Judging by their webpage, yes
@Boris_yo wow, they cost more to make than I was expecting...

@Mokubai How much you expected?

@Boris_yo about $5, they look crap and from what I've heard they sound worse. By all accounts Apple made a very shrewd purchase in buying Beats. A company built on nothing but image (and little else) buying another company that has crap product built on nothing but image... sounds like a match made in heaven.

5:55 PM
@Boris_yo Were you actually expecting them to have the quality to back up their price tag?

6:30 PM
@Mokubai asking "is it a Kickstarter game?" is like asking "Is Star Wars IV: A New Hope a Star Wars movie?"
it is THE most heavily-funded crowd-funded project ever to exist in the history of the world
they get their money exclusively from donations (no VC) and they have raised over $50 million
it's a case study in how to raise money with Kickstarter.

@allquixotic So that's a "yes" then ;P
Strangely I had a friend link me some overdubbed video from that game earlier today... I guess I was supposed to know that it existed.

the only people who are allowed to not be aware of Star Citizen's existence are people who think the internet is made up of a series of tubes

Suddenly I feel like the old guy from The Community....

6:55 PM
@allquixotic So at the very least the people behind the game aren't likely to be very worried about crashing their new Bugati Veyrons, they can just buy a new set...
I'm interested in the game, but I hope to hell it doesn't just turn into Microsoft Access EVE Online.

@Mokubai ships won't be available for purchase using real life money once the game goes live; that's just for raising money
their income is supposedly going to come from subscriptions
which adds convenience and is kind of pay to win, but if it's only $10 - $15 per month, that's not "I pull in $200k a year so I'm paying $2000 for this ship" level P2W
speaking of which

7:13 PM
I'm still looking for a space simulator that can replace Frontier in this tired old jaded heart...
Freelancer came close for a while, but never quite managed it.
The X Series is too obtuse and I think I need a keyboard overlay, and EVE online is basically a space theme for Microsoft Access
Ho Lee Fuk. I still have saved games for Freelancer from 2009, and the game still works!

7:32 PM
Hey guys, my first time visiting chat...do we have any people online who are windows registry experts?

@user507974 expert in what way?

I was tweaking around in registries and by accident I committed unfathomable stupidity (like on the level deleting system32 level stupid) when I accidentally deleted the entire 32bit toolkit embedding for 64bit systems (SysWow64)
I have system restores and registry backups from earlier this day...but I can't run them since it seems like my OS has kind of forgotten how directories work...

o.O

@user507974 can you run sfc /scannow?
worst case you can try booting to a windows CD's recovery console and run it from there

@Mokubai But how can apple be build on nothing but image? It's Steve Jobs man! The pioneer of 1st smartphone!

7:41 PM
i tried running a system repair disc (meaning i had to reboot), so whenever i try to run that OS again all that comes up is a collection of weird unicode characters...

@Mokubai I wasn't expecting junk for sure. I was expecting something in the middle.

can i use a system repair disc to enter the recovery console

@user507974 Personally I'd fire up a Linux CD and restore the registry backups that were in C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack to C:\Windows\System32\config

that's kind of along the lines of what I was thinking; I still have a working windows OS on this system from my pre-SSD days

@Boris_yo I had smartphones before Steve "I invented that" Jobs drunkenly stumbled onto the scene

7:44 PM
I can access system restore and my registry backups, but how exactly do I make these edits from an outside OS to the screwed up on
e

@user507974 Linux LiveCDs are your friend, the registry backup is a full backup so all being well all you need is to copy the files over (REMEMBER TO BACK UP THE FILES YOU HAVE FIRST)

one thing, just to confirm, I made this registry backup with CCleaner, do you know comprehensive these backups might be?

Haven't used CCleaner in years so I can't say...

I made it prior to even running the sfcan so I thought it'd back up everything prior to analysis, but the small file size has me concerned, how large would a full system reg backup be
scan*

You looking at the files in "C:\Windows\System32\config" and "C:\Windows\System32\config\regback" like I mentioned?
For me the Software hive is about 90MB and System is about 12MB
Though I don't believe the files get compacted when data is removed so that could be erroneous
I wouldn't go restoring a CCleaner backup over the files in C:\Windows\System32\config
