. . . . "This is like… the perfect example of how not to build a media centre. Especially one that you expect to “last you a very long time”. I’m going to have to show this to the SAN guys at work on Monday, because this entire build is absolutely hilarious." But still really Neet-o

Its ugly in the best way ever.

A x-mas gift plauge that will provide endless hours of noise , wastes of power and replacing of disks. But it is the thought that really counts.

And yeah, it is. You can get the same amount of storage out of regular drives
Price per disk isn't bad tho
(though I suspect a new larger drive would give you better price per gig.)
but god. Its ugly in the bestest way.

The idea of a computer in the tables (not just this one) is on one side really smart use of space and , cool ways to show it. but dogs and people bumping up against it, would drive me batty.
The dog would lean up against it fully, and start scratching hisself Whadda Whadda Whadda while 38 drive heads are trying to hit a space the size of a few microns

Staples (office supply store) confirmed on Friday that suspicious cyber activity, first spotted in September, was most likely a malware attack that may have breached 1.16 million credit cards.

A preliminary investigation found evidence of malware installed in the point-of-sales systems at 115 locations.
Security official Lee Hendrick said, there are so many exploits to go still and so much bad programming, and so many ways to infect a system, we have decided to just let it all be and "Let God Sort It out" :-)
""Boeing has joined forces with BlackBerry to develop a high-security ‘black phone’, running on Android software. Designed for government agencies, it will encrypt calls, as well as destruct all its data if it is tampered with."" Microsoft called them , and stated that they invented failures of that type, and had 2 patents on BSODs :-)
"T-Mobile will be paying $90 million in refunds paid to customers over so-called “cramming” techniques which put bogus charges on customers' bills to boost the bottom line of the company" Officials at T-mobile say the investors should not worry because they will pay for it all with subversive rate increases in the form of "fees", and are offering 100 free minutes via a CD that will be mailed out to everyone :-)
Disclaimer: these are news parodies, not to be confused with anything real.
"Microsoft Combats Tech Support Scammers with Lawsuit

The software giant is trying to crack down on scammers that allegedly took advantage of consumers by claiming their PCs were infected with malware."
Through an agreement in arbitration , the makers of the malware have agreed to only offer this software in the macrosoft store, from now on.

3:33 AM
What an awfully quiet day today...
Anyway, looks like I'm the only one who earned the Bill Lumbergh hat here on Super User
Spent hours posting and refining answers
This is all while I'm adopting a new post format inspired by Thaddeus at Science Fiction & Fantasy
That was a lot of work for me
I also had to run the (review) rounds and vote to close a bunch of questions
This was one very busy day for me while much of Super User seemed asleep

3:49 AM
SuperUsers never die , they just get downvoted into oblivion.

@Psycogeek Since school's out for me, I'm practically free
However, this one hat kept me busy the whole day

Thanks to Zazzle.

@Psycogeek, what do you think about my new post style?
I'm waiting for Thaddeus to respond in the feedback room
With @JourneymanGeek much less active than before due to work, and with the recent increase in site-wide activity, I genuinely think we need new moderators, just as you said
yesterday, by Psycogeek
SE need to hire extra holiday help. Temporary moderators to pitch in (secretly being given trials , if nobody complains then after the hollidays you got 2 more mods).

lol
I haven't started working yet

I prefer easily readable layouts with headers, and important stuff highlighted. But some people may hate it?

3:59 AM
and mods will request if they need help ;p

Do we need to hold another election, or should we appoint new mods ("called up after the election to meet additional demand")?

I'd rather an election but I'm not seeing overwhelming need ;p

@JourneymanGeek, any feedback on my new post style (courtesy Thaddeus)?

@JourneymanGeek well you would know. some of us cant even see what gets transported out into the vaccume of space.

That I haven't looked at. But meh, what's important is if it works for you.

4:02 AM
Seems my new-style posts are averaging very good scores (around 3)
It was really exhausting for me to push for the Bill Lumbergh hat while adopting the new format
Note that posts need to have a score of at least 1 in addition to having been posted on the same Saturday in order to qualify towards the hat
This is the biggest challenge I have ever had to meet in my 3+ years on Super User

My biggest chalenge since being on SU, was trying to play a game, and watch a movie at the same time, the winning still being the hard part.

4:18 AM
@DragonLord: meta.stackexchange.com/q/245822/135565 is worth taking a look at ;p
That's probably the only really shitty thing about moderation ;p
(and folks, please don't downvote the OP. I'm sure he's suffered enough)

4:36 AM
wintelguy.com/raidmttdl.pl this seems useful

5:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek Shame on you!
If I remember correctly the questions were really poor... but meh

Bob
5:27 AM

One for me?
or three, there's plenty to spare
After looking at the question/answer ratios of random users I don't feel too bad about mine now =p

lol
too many questions or too few?

Bob
@ekaj That site is terrible.
More-or-less advertising for that company.
Absolutely no details on how you can detect it, for example.

@ekaj: I don't remember which meta question ;p

my q/a is 5:1.. random users I looked at were more of 1:5-6 or so

XD
1:24 ;p

boo =p
What meta post are you talking about?

not counting a handful of deleted questions
@ekaj This one!

I tried to delete a couple of my bad ones, but other people received some reputation

5:42 AM
Or whatever it was referencing.

/me searches

4 deleted questions

I don't remember what I was talking about..
getting old

lol
I need to clean out my FF downloads folder 0_0
Its ~17gb

same, I'm becoming one of the users where the downloads folder never gets cleaned out..
only 9.6 atm, most of my ISOs got moved to the other drive

5:46 AM
lol
My isos are on another drive
ahh got it down to 6gb

Bob
26 GB here.
Mostly things like VS
And a W8 ISO
And Black Mesa
And MSOffice

Those don't belong in downloads tho
they get moved to appropriate folders like the ISO store

How you back it up if it isnt all organised and sorted ? Do you make backups that take longer to figure out than to re-download :-)

Bob
Eh. On my desktop they just sit there.
I have space to spare.

(my FF download folder used to be on the DOID)

Bob
5:50 AM
Laptop and work machine are better organised.
@Psycogeek I don't even back up my downloads folder!

eheh.
My next big hardware purchase should be around june/july
waiting on the new seagate archive drives

Bob
huh?

oh, for backups and such
got distracted. BISCUIT.

Waiting until my next format, then I'll keep my files organized for 6 months like I usually do then organization will slowly decline

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I mean, what is an "archive" drive?

5:52 AM
@Bob: Lowish speed, low cost, high capacity drives?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek What is the "seagate archive" drive?

WD Green! Just don't leave them on long =p

@Bob but then what will you do when the Zombie Internet Alien nuclear end-of-times WWIII apocalypse comes ? that is when that stuff becomes valuable.

They're labelled as such!
@Bob: The brand name ;p

5:53 AM
dang

but at the cost/capasity, I can probably afford a spare or two.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek shrug

according to windirstat I have a few ISOs stashed in various places on my PC...

@Bob: Well, a proper nas is definately past the 3 month rule mark. And I'd really like a proper backup setup ;p
tho...

What is the 3 month rule mark?

5:55 AM
@ekaj: I never buy anything unless I've wanted it for at least 3 months ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Meh. amazon.com/dp/B00JBJ34WC

++ time to save up enough for it

not a bad idea =p

@Bob: ya, same family

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 'cept nothing about "archive" crap. iow, marketing crap.
I also wouldn't want to be part of the test batch of a new recording technique.
That's just asking for trouble.

5:57 AM
@Bob: Hence me waiting past 6 months. And this would be for systems backed up in other ways too.

I have to wait 6months till this guy gets done "I purchased 15 of these drives in both the OEM and boxed retail version when they first came out and they were not cheap at that time. All 15 failed "

Bob
:P

tbh I still prefer the 3.5" floppies

also much like the sith, good backups are in the rule of two ;p
(or three. Or more)
@ekaj: I used to know a guy who called them stiffies.

Bob
@ekaj Oh, you mean the things that lost data if you looked at them funny?

5:58 AM
haha =p

@Bob: local backups + Bunch of 6tb drives as second tier + backblaze or some other cloud backup sounds good.
and beats the guy who built his brother a backup system with 43 500 gb hard drives ;p

Back here "BlackBerry & Boeing make self-destructing 'black phone'" i still had one more joke. the way it self destructs is the battery catches fire, it is also known as a DreamBerry

Ever taken a hard drive apart, bent the disks, and used it as a fan?
sounds scary man

6:32 AM
0_0
!!no

Hey, sitting at an internship with nothing to do except destroy hard drives for a day and you'll find something to do

Stuff I'm afraid to ask...
imgur.com/a/pa8fZ Is nailing your network equipment to a wall considered normal?

do you browse techsupportgore or cableporn?
and no, from what I've seen in production networks it is not at all =p

No ;p
Thats from /r/sysadmin

6:36 AM
imgur.com/r/techsupportgore and imgur.com/r/cableporn

which I added to my RSS feeds for some odd reason

I haven't been to that one
That would be so frustrating.. and probably waste a lot of time (the intensive timekeeping part)

lol
@ekaj: physically destroying?

Yessir

eh. A drillpress would be nice for that ;p

6:42 AM
Hence the making fans out of them =p
true.. we didn't have one though :(
/r/unixporn seems interesting too

Bit of a waste tho, outside compliance reasons
rofl
I waste enough time on RSS feeds ;p

95% of the HDDs were just random desktops, but the CISO or whatever wanted them destroyed

I'm a big fan of doing a proper antiforensic wipe.

And how's that done?

shred's a sensible tool or dban,
Takes longer than physical destruction

6:47 AM
ah =p

Well that does make me think, most places I work the equipment is made for such an environment.. using a zip tie with a screw hole isn't a bad idea if your equipment isn't exactly make for a NOC / whatever else

My desk is probably a lot worse

Mine is actually pretty good =p

But at the moment, it looks like a messier, cut down version of a movie hacker desk

6:52 AM
Need a bigger desk though
oh geesh you should see when I have all my tech stuff in one place, right now it's spread out over 3
That box with the split Ethernet cables, I can't guess what it is though
It goes to phone lines out but doesn't go to the punchdown block

That's my underdesk wiring. There's another powerstrup behind the solid wooden panel.

I like that setup
Is that a mini screen under your lamp or what?

yup
10.1 incher

Is that SU up with a dark contrast?

7:03 AM
Interesting =p

Its mounted on a piece of wood and a repurposed clamp base. Most of the controller is in a cut up USB floppu drive case.

If it works, it works

ya
I need to migrate my IRC connections there too.

Any specific reason for the contrast? I think it would be helpful for me at night time
I currently dim the screen to max and use dimscreen.exe, but dimscreen messes up the quality

Oh, just trying it out and I liked it.
That screen has decent pixel density, and it improves readability for me hugely.

7:10 AM
I did use Flux for a while; actually I kinda forgot about it until this convo
It really helped me at night time

IIRC its a userscript, @OliverSalzburg wrote it ;p

flux?

no, the dark theme

Ahh =p

Oh, and I share keyboard across three boxen ;p
The second keyboard's mainly for login.
(That's one thing I'm going to miss at my new job.)

7:12 AM
which program do you use for that? I had one for a while, can't think of the name..
what's the setup at the new place?
synergy or something

Synergy.
(I have free licenses for that ;p)
From what I saw, dell workstations
everything is fantastic, other than the keyboards ;p

Take your own! =p or what about a request?

I'll have to see how things work

get like a guitar case for keyboards, or one of those banjo cases for tommy guns

XD
Actually, razer has a case that's free with the model I use now

7:14 AM
Pretty sure I'll never own a keyboard that expensive or nice =p

I'll settle in and see, I can probably manage a membrane keyboard;p
lol
Its 200 dollars or so.

If I ever get my dream desk and computer set up, I'll get one

lol
My desk is a reused tabletop with ikea trestle legs.
Total cost.. 20 dollars. Table was free but the legs sucked.
But since its so crap, I just drill holes into it whenever ;p

My older computer desk is built out of 2x2's and oak hardwood flooring from my old house =p
worked like a champ though
...and I like to build things in general

dude.
REAL WOOD.
Trestle legs are nice for two reasons

7:18 AM
The current one is build out of oak cabinets / top that I stained =p the fraternity paid for that one though..

they're fairly low profile, and flexible

trestle as in looking like an A?

and a breeze to install. When I installed these legs, I just slid them under the curent legs, and dismantled them
Ya

That does sound handy

Dream desk would have something closer to this ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00225293 with a solid wood countertop.

7:20 AM
tthat's an interesting design

It works well

yay shelves!

I stuck a floor tile for shelving ;p
cannae EVER have enough storage ;p

I need to get better at storing my little gadgets, those are the problems

and since there's a tile there, I can put my roomie's hot water bag in it if he's having a bad day with his leg ;p
lol
I suck at that

7:22 AM
I did recently get ~30 cable ties though, those help

lol
I don't ever buy cableties
Our supermarket uses them as theft deterrents
I have a trick for undoing them when I'm super bored ;p

these are the Velcro ones, we had a bunch extra at my internship =p

ahh, nice
What's being an intern like?

Where I'm at now, it's like being a full time employee making minimum wage with no benefits
At my previous one, the guy I worked with was knowledgeable enough to ask questions on almost anything - now the guy I work with is really advanced in networking (routing, traffic shaping, etc.) and a little Linux, but no windows..

ahh ;p

7:28 AM
also, no one there uses Windows and they hate it, so I'm being pushed (although I don't mind) into the server administration role. I like that aspect =p ... overall I think it's a pretty good experience, it starts me out in the field with real world experience that most people my age don't have

lol
My new job seems to run EVERYTHING internally.

What do you mean by that?

I'm not too sure about what we'll be using, but meh, I'm a generalist. ;p

as in server admin, etc?

@ekaj: ya. None of that cloud shit ;p

7:30 AM
ah, we use some EC2 instances and stuff =p

Which I suspected was something they liked
\
"Why do you run your own wordpress instance?" "Its more fun"

It's frustrating sometimes working with people who aren't generalists - if Windows messes up, or a competing brand in networking equipment fails, it's always that piece of technologies fault.. that view is never taken when it's something they use

Annoying WP was down when I was interviewing. Fixed it up now ;p
@ekaj: I was so bored, and had such a low budget it was natural ;p

My first website was run from my house, I thought it was fun =p

ditto
I might self host again in a few years.

7:33 AM
I probably will when my hosting subscription expires, and change domain too
I need more hands on experience.. probably going to confiscate two ESX boxes at my internship and build some Windows networks

XD
I need to play with that
KVM's my current hypervisor of choice.

I've only ever really played with VMware's ESX, it seems like most larger companies prefer it, or at least that's how I've taken it
I have a friend that swears by Xen, but he's also a Linux nut

KVM tends to run on anything with VT-X
ALMOST went with ESX on my brix
very easy setup too

Have you used ESX much?

Not got it running
its picky about hardware and I'm poor ;p

7:40 AM
It is, unless you take the ISO and inject the drivers

tried that on my brix
psoded

It won't run on my mini-itx, haven't tried injecting drivers though

If I spent a couple hundred bucks more I could have gotten a core i5

I've spent a bit of money on books recently, I need to start reading them..
mainly about viruses and stuff 'cause they're neat

:)
I'm good on hardware for a few months

7:42 AM
read countdown to zero day or spam nation if you get a chance, interesting reads =p

XD
I'll check if my friendly local (sadly online only) it bookstore has it, when my budget settles down ;p

alright =p not sure if you're into that kind of stuff.. one day I'd like to go into security, but we'll see how that goes

lol
I'm a hardware nut first
Learnt linux cause a friend said it was easy.. and she wasn't much help
and I cannot resist a challenge ;p

problem for me is i start too many challenges =p

Break them down
Prioritise!

7:49 AM
but none of them are important! =p

Some are more unimportant than others!

I do need to do that though, now that I got my phone back it will help.. I relied a lot on my calendar, and it helps me to sort out my thoughts
I'm taking my internship as a class next semester, maybe I'll get to work on more projects when we're not busy

Sager said my laptop had four storage bays allowing for fancy RAID setups
Namely, one 2.5-inch 9.5mm z-height bay, one 2.5-inch 7mm z-height bay, and two mSATA slots
When I first opened my computer, I was only able to find one mSATA bay
Only yesterday did I realize that there is indeed another mSATA bay
That's because I've never removed the primary hard drive from the computer before, and that mSATA bay is concealed beneath that hard drive :p
Sager didn't lie when they said there were four storage bays, and I never thought I would populate as many as three of them until now

Bob
> USB cable plugged into a Serial to Ethernet adapter
...wut

8:04 AM
^_^
...and if one wanted a fifth drive, a drive caddy is available as an option for use in place of the optical drive

seems like that laptop would be huge
..never mind, didn't see the mSATA slot part, had to re read =p
TIL why I can't access my school's external websites from the LAN: serverfault.com/questions/76715/…

8:25 AM
lol
Its still prolly huge ;p

1 hour later…
9:29 AM
The SSD advantage isn't really cutting boot time in half more than it is being able to use the computer the moment you log in without any waiting
I thoroughly underestimated the difference storage performance makes

I had the chance of grabbing this for $99 ... amazon.com/Sony-MDRXB950BT-Extra-Bluetooth-Headset/dp/…
I think it's best wireless bluetooth headset with microphone.

I'm not one to skimp on hardware and the SSD 850 PRO delivers in every way conceivable

@DragonLord I don't know about you but mine Intel 120GB made dramatical difference in everything.

Bob
I'm happy with my caching :P
Except on the desktop. Because caching doesn't work there :S

I/O-bound tasks suddenly become compute-bound

9:34 AM
And I am happy with my SSD and no way look back to return to HDD even if it's difference between 10 TIB HDD and 60GB SSD.

...and you never realize your hard drive was holding you back until you replace it with a good SSD

lol
both!!!!

Bob
^
I have well over 6 TB of data now.
Even the laptop has over 500 GB on it.
Pure SSD would be prohibitively expensive.
And mostly useless, too.

@JourneymanGeek Audiophile of SU. What is your opinion on MDR-XB950BT/B?

I can't give an opinion on something I have never heard ;p
Reviews seem ok ;p

9:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yes but bluetooth is limited in range so I can't walk in house where I want having good signal.

Walking around? While listening to music? Sounds dangerous ;p

@JourneymanGeek And Skyping

Sure way to harm yourself. Greviously and Bodily.

9:58 AM
That "slow computer" feeling is the result of more and more content piling up on a hard drive and the attendant increase in disk seeks required to perform normal tasks
Files get scattered across the disk and seeks take longer and longer to complete
With an SSD, you eliminate this I/O-bound behavior and dramatically increase both perceived and real performance by vastly increasing I/O throughput
As a result, upgrading from HDD to SSD typically makes an old, slow computer feel like new again

1 hour later…
Bob
11:17 AM
@DragonLord Adding an SSD cache has mostly the same effect.
And it makes better use of available SSD space, so it's arguably more effective (depending on the workload - this applies for standard home use where a single SSD isn't enough space)
Unfortunately, caching software is still rather poor in many aspects.
Intel SRT is probably the best at the moment, but it has a limit of 64 GB for the cache, and only works where the drives are on the same controller.
Other alternatives (VeloSSD, PrimoCache) are unpolished and potentially dangerous.

@Bob, you can add whatever you want to punc or create a dict, so I don't get your point — Padraic Cunningham 7 mins ago
...seriously?
(context: "whatever you want" would include individual characters/ranges, probably over a thousand, from different parts of Unicode)

2:34 PM
"It's Christmas, and we must give frontline officers better access to firearms to fight the inevitable sugle in family violence."
Wow!
How much wrongness can you cram into one sentence?
(souce: New zealand. From a politician)

2:57 PM
s/sugle/surge/

3:42 PM
@Hennes Domestic violence occasionally rises when our national Rugby team loses...

Bob
4:39 PM
If you need firearms to deal with domestic violence, you're doing something horribly wrong.

5:01 PM
Agreed
I hope it was just some attention grabbing by saying extremely stupid stuff thing.
G-d knows we have politicians who do the same (e..g Wilders).
Still, sooooo much wrongness in one sentence

@Hennes Are you Jewish?
(I am not sure if other religions omit a letter like that)
