Interview on monday ;p

Good luck !
@Bob It's on bob time

@HackToHell: That's what got me so far ;p

Sometimes, the problems people bring up are so simple to fix

A: Drive is missing from My Computer but is visible in Disk Management, how do I get it to show up?

DragonLordThe drive is partitioned and formatted, but you haven't assigned a drive letter to the volume. In Disk Management, right-click on the volume (in your case, the one on Disk 0), select Change Drive Letter and Paths..., click on the Add button, and assign a drive letter to the volume.

@JourneymanGeek :D
Wire's source code in html has some wierd stuff

5:37 AM
@HackToHell: wire or wired?

With Australia Post for delivery today
It's 5:30 PM
:\
Far past the usual delivery time...

@Bob what you waiting for? that tablet you ordered?

Bob
ya

Bob
6:57 AM
yay. got it.
and it works :D

7:15 AM
yay!

Bob
Ok. I want to update to 8.1
Now... should I image it first? Hm.
And how do I image it? O_O
...you're not helping, Clippy.
Oh, there's already a recovery partition. Nice.

@Bob I'd use a USB DVD drive
the recovery part will include their crapware with it, IIRC

Bob
7:31 AM
@allquixotic I'm creating recovery media on a flash drive right now
don't have a usb optical drive available
@allquixotic there seems to be almost no crapware on it
just some asus cloud storage thing
probably not enough memory for anything else :P

Bob
:)

8:02 AM
this is super wierd
someone is blasting music downstairs
and I can hear it from a single SUPER SPECIFIC part of my room

Bob
o.O
@JourneymanGeek xkcd.com/316 .

@Bob apropos, and hilarious, and glad you didn't onebox it
but I find the elliptical reflector dish much more hilarious than the rest of that one ;p
maybe it's just JMG's dog ears acting up. is this music perhaps consisting of a high-pitched dog whistle?

@JourneymanGeek Check the floor for holes

8:18 AM
O_o
sparse flooring? I'm fine with sparse files, but I prefer my floors solid
multi-tasker

Oh, didn't realise that was running.

lol

8:37 AM
I do multitask tho ;p

8:57 AM
@allquixotic: you're much more patient than I am ;p
Also WRT my floors...
concrete, parquet over that, and laminate over that.
(Don't ask)

Bob
> Storage devices do not care at all about "file types". They see every file as a sequence of bytes.
From the other perspective, though... some filetypes seek more frequently, and are better suited for SSDs.
More accurately, the program using said types.

tldr. SHITTY QUESTION ;p

Bob
A DB file would be better suited for an SSD. An archive is better suited for a HDD.

@Bob: but that would mean my backup mp3s are read/written to less often than my mp3s in actual use.
so, yeah, I suppose

Bob
@JourneymanGeek True - it's not purely the type, but the type does make a difference.
The storage device doesn't care. The program using it might.

9:01 AM
But we don't know how you're using those files ;p

4 hours later…

Hello all!

Q: using a TP-link TD-W8151N as a wireless repeater?

vimes1984I have a Asus RT-N10E that i am using with a wimax connection that is giving me a Wifi network. I've jsut installed a Yagi antenna in my neighbors house but the signal strength is extremely low ( no direct line of site). Since i have a TP-link TD-W8151N to hand I was wondering if i could set this...

ahh
Me and wifi usually don't get along

that makes two of us
I'm a Programer not a netowrker
:D

WTF is this?
Suddenly I need to authenticate myself to use google?

@terdon: happens rarely to me ;p

2:07 PM
Google thinks your a bot
:D

@JourneymanGeek What is it?

happened to me now and again

Is it really google? What does it care if I'm a bot or not?

@terdon: precisely what it says
@terdon: apparently it does, yes it is.

if I'm hitting google's ip repeteadly

2:08 PM
Grumble, domineering bastards, grumble.

My system is behind a proxy
kinda sorta. Its wierd
200 websites are officially blocked...
but I've reached at least one accidentally on my phone

I wonder what I did to make it think so poorly of me.

@JourneymanGeek my gainful contributions to this site have taken a turn to meta in a big way over the past month or three... partly because I don't have to do any research/googling for most meta posts, I can just write :D

also, it gets me meta badges for the next election that I'll probably withdraw from after running briefly

@allquixotic dont forget to log in to gog.com!!

Bob
@allquixotic so what does that string unlock? :P

Bob
3:52 PM
stamps? o.o

they're runnning a "click-on-our-website-once-per-day-for-seven-days" campaign

@Kristian why?

for each click you get a "stamp"

@Bob ...nothing? it's the alphabet O_O

oh, I might remember wrong and it wasn't you who told me
to be honest, come to think of it I think it was @HackToHell

heh
@Kristian that's ok, you're a cat
once upon a time my gravatar was a cat too

It was @HackToHell actually ;p

@allquixotic I thought it was data ;p

@JourneymanGeek that too
and the "oh don piano" cat

4:10 PM
@allquixotic cats make excellent avatars!

@Kristian cats are minnows. I call my cat a fish because of the way she turns her body around in one fluid motion when she makes her scent marking rounds on my legs while I sit at my computer
comes up, rubs against my legs, turns around like a fish, repeat... like 9 times

one for each life, I'm sure.

5:10 PM
Hmm... The Pod Bay (the chat for Space Exploration) has the XKCD comics on an RSS feed for the room

5:35 PM
I want that here!

@allquixotic Done. Wait till Monday

:))))
the Top 10 regulars in this channel all love XKCD as far as I'm aware, so that should be uncontroversial

holy

5:40 PM
Sweet, just loads the last few I guess

I don't love XKCD THAT much
several pages worth lol

It'll only be three times a week, starting on Monday
Plus, the tool tip text

oh ok =)

Bob
@allquixotic careful of nsfw though
just don't add too many feeds, or it gets a bit spammy

@Bob he doesn't do nsfw often except that one back in the 300's

Bob
5:53 PM
@allquixotic that was extreme, but there are mild nsfw ones too

@allquixotic @Bob What was the "bad" one that was NSFW?

i think the trackpad ones?
or maybe the swinging sex

I know I've gone through all the comics before... But I don't recall the swinging one

xkcd 940 I think

@JakeGould: Thanks. Did you rescale the picture? How did you do that? — Tim 32 secs ago

he didn't use the m modifier, did he?

6:14 PM
@jokerdino nope
That's a neat trick, but… not very easy to find

well, I wouldnt have known if JMG didn't tell me xD

“Did you rescale the picture? How did you do that?” I loaded the picture on a smaller computer and then uploaded it to this computer I am typing on via a 3.5mm male-male stereo audio cable. — JakeGould 14 secs ago

I like where this is going.

@slhck that sucks -- so if I want to make a BIIIIG wallpaper, I have to buy a BIIIIG computer?

Q: Burn tags whose questions are all migrated

QuyNguyen2013I've noticed that there are many tags that only have questions that are migrated. Would it be feasible to have an automated process burn such tags?

6:20 PM
@allquixotic Yeah… and a big screen of course. Otherwise the wallpaper will be all crumpled in the small display.

Hi guys I have a problem (I think)

No you don't. You HV!! You only come here when you have a problem!! :(

Kidding. Sorta. But seriously, you've been such a stranger of late. :/

Hah I know :(

If I were female I'd slap you for "only coming around when you need me"

Actually I am not very good at chatrooms and forums in general these days.
I used to be on them ALL THE TIME. These days not so much
I try when I think of it though!
Heh
But yeah. I have two displays here at work, both identical models (Dell U2412M). Main display is HDMI->DVI-D connected. Secondary is DisplayPort. Those are my only two options. My main display also has the speaker bar attached, which I use regularly.

6:26 PM
ENOTCONSTRUCTIVE have a nice day! ... again, kidding

Lately I'm seeing my main display flicker to black for a second and then come back. It seems to occur mostly when I walk into the area or plug in my headphones. But only some of the times. It does happen on occasion if I'm just sitting at my desk too.
lol

you should expect some hazing after such a long break from here ;p

It doesn't stay black for long and doesn't go into standby. It's infrequent enough that it's not very disruptive. But it's still concerning.
So, grounding? Static? Failing display?
lol I know :P
I haven't been doing a lot in the tech area lately. Mainly just working and playing video games mostly.
I mean, work is tech, but not interesting or something I can talk about at length here because NDA. :P
interesting to you* :P

@BenRichards which one goes black (not that it matters) the HDMi or the DP? are there any other adaptions used at all, or is this straight from (what is it from?)

The one with HDMI->DVI. It's a cable, not a separate adapter. I have been thinking of bringing in an HDMI cable and just trying that, no DVI, but it shouldn't matter, right? Unless the cable is bad?
The display outputs are served by my port replicator. Connections are solid. I checked for loose connections already.

6:30 PM
things to try:
(1) Buy a shielded HDMI cable, OR buy a ferrite core that fits snugly over the cable and attach it to the existing cable
(2) Try replacing the HDMI to DVI-D adapter
(3) Try replacing the HDMI cable itself
(4) Try switching which monitor is DVI-D and which is DisplayPort, to see if it's just the one monitor on the one port, or whether the flickering follows the monitor, etc

Ah
I think I actually have a ferrite core laying around. Just recently saw it in my bag'o'miscellaneous cables
Which end do I put it on? Does it matter?
I can also bring in an HDMI-HDMI cable.

it doesn't matter where you put it, but it has the best effect if you put it closest to the source of errant EM, and ideally not in the middle of the cable
put it near one of the endpoints

It's an HDMI-DVID cable, btw. :P HDMI is basically DVI plus audio though, so there's not much "adapting" going on.
Ah

I have found that the quality of HDMI cables varies WIDELY, and that thickness, price, specs, brand reputation can have a huuuuge impact on reliability and shieldedness

Good point, if the data was totally disrupted by some horrid interferance it could drop out that way. it mostly sounds like a stuff IN the monitor itself problem. I lost a dell24 when the powersupply thingee inside it (ac connecting monitor) failed completly.

6:33 PM
I think I tried swapping cables but it didn't do much. I can try again though. It's just a pain because that means having to go behind my monitors.

my friend at work occasionally gives me these REALLY LAME facepalm jokes about computers
"Why was there a bug in the computer?
It was looking for a byte to eat."

lol

@BenRichards well if the problem follows the monitor even after switching ports, that eliminates any potential issue with the GPU

Yeah

6:35 PM
if the problem follows the port irrespective of which monitor is plugged into it, then it's most likely the GPU or driver

But again it was a long time ago.
So I don't remember :P

just go behind your monitors and switch the cables.... take the HDMI->DVI-D and stick it in monitor #2, and take the DP and stick it in monitor #1

could be that thing too, then
my troubleshooting method in cases like this is basically Spock from Star Trek
try random shit, and each time you try something, draw a conclusion that X, Y or Z problem is eliminated
keep eliminating problems until nothing's left but what MUST be the problem

It actually is still solid. I'd expect more things to be wonky if it was failing. everything (audio, keyboard, mouse, displays, and Ethernet at some point) is connected to it and working fine, other than this.
I'll try swapping the displays again and then swapping cables out later.
Just happened again and I was just sitting here.
Typing

6:39 PM
@BenRichards and nothing can go wrong there right :-) What is the video card in the computer? and have you done anything on its side?

I'll check windows logs too to see if I can pinpoint any errors
The computer is a Surface Pro 2. All integrated Intel :P

ah, something that new is unlikely to be exhibiting graphics issues

Yeah

Ahh i never know if he is joking or that sure of new stuff google.com/…

Don't see any errors/events logged that seem to correspond, though I could be looking in the wrong place too, if theres any.
I'm serving these displays over USB3 using Displaylink drivers. Issues like this would be likely in the USB port replicator than in the graphics hardware. The display driver hardware on the motherboard isn't used in this case. The display data is being sent over USB and the port replicator is driving the displays instead.
So if it was hardware and not the monitors, I'd expect it to be in the port replicator.

6:44 PM
the port rep could have everything working fine except that its DVI to Displaylink/USB decoder/converter could be going up

That thing in your search that talks about pen calibration and the corners of the screens is something I see too. I think it's just something that you're stuck with, with the way the digitizer is installed. It would make sense that you get weird behavior at the edges. I think Wacom tablets probably have more "bezel" to compensate?
True.

if you aren't hearing the USB "bee-boop!" noise when your monitor flickers then it isn't on the USB end

Right.

@BenRichards dont you have a regular desktop thing that you can put single monitors on to test the monitor hardware ?

6:45 PM
I do on my desk, yeah, but it's all not plugged in, lol

divide and conquer, peel back the onion, etc

I can try that out later when I'm not doing real work :P

well you came here looking for help :) so now you have like a bazillion things to try
most of em just intuition

Yup :)
Oh I have been doing neat stuff lately! Learning lisp/elisp and customizing the heck out of emacs. This is precisely what I wanted when I kept wishing I could script Notepad++. :D
Also, I deep dived into using fluxbox for my window manager on our Linux machines. Like maybe 1 other person uses it here so I set it up from (basically) scratch, and customized it a bunch. So fun. :)

But I only have problems specifically with TWO cores! When I use fewer or more, everything works fine! I'm such a special snowflake! :( Why won't you let me be a special snowflake, fixer1234? — allquixotic 12 secs ago
admittedly I'm getting a little silly on Friday afternoon, but

6:48 PM
But since we upgraded our servers to SL6, it doesn't work with NX anymore for some odd reason, so I'm stuck with VNC. :(
Passed on word of xrdp though. They said it looked really interesting and would consider rolling it into their server images :)
hehe
At least I got around my major annoyances with VNC by figuring out xrandr and also how to change the DPI scaling without having to log out/log in with fluxbox.
It's weird knowing stuff. I'm too used to being a clueless newb with Linux and associated tools :P

sounds like you're developing a bit of domain expertise in graphics / remote desktoping; good

Well, out of necessity :P
I tend to build a bit of domain expertise in anything I use regularly. Because I love tweaking the heck out of things. I hate settling for default settings. :P
I also am using a lot of tools that we don't have in our server images and since I don't have root access, I have to build them from source and install them to my home directory.
Including dependencies. :P
Things like tmux. :P
Linux is like a hacker's dream playground. It's so fun if you like to tweak and fiddle.

> don't have root access
!!no

I can understand not giving root access to a bunch of entry-level noobs with Windows machines, but if you're going to give a programmer access to a Linux server and he clearly knows what he's doing, you bloody give him root access @_@

6:59 PM
These are shared servers and it's not my job to fiddle with that stuff. :P
