This question seems to be getting closed as off-topic on EE.SE (electrical engineering stack). Would it be a better fit on Superuser?

Q: Serial Connection Not Working on Modified Router

James JefferyI have a Sagem F@ST 2504 router. Following the advice from OpenWRT wiki (http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/sagem/fast2404) I managed to solder the header pins in the correct place. I've attached pics below. My soldering isn't the best, but I'm working with a gas iron that I'm not too comfortable with. ...

@NickAlexeev could it fit in raspberrypi.stackexchange.com <-- there?

@Psycogeek Hmm... RPi is mentioned in the comments. I wonder how important the RPi is to the situation. (I'm not an RPi guy myself, so it's hard for me to judge.)

oh i see, adding a serial connect to a router, to update firmware, and it being obstinate.
must land somewhere between the 2 , at computer hardware .SE .
I do not think the person would have got as good an answer as they did there? unless some person having done the same thing came along. looks like the electrical guru knew what it expected.

@Psycogeek All right, if it gets closed, I will not migrate it and leave it where it is.

Bob
2:43 AM
@allquixotic Or, don't install cygwin and use native tools.

3:00 AM
@Bob on Windows?

Bob
@allquixotic Ya.

3:37 AM
@NickAlexeev: Its one of those grey areas
tho... gas iron? WRONG TOOL DUDE.
I wouldn't consider it worth migrating, personally

2 hours later…
5:47 AM
someone tried to use shellshock on my VPS to run a ddos irc script.. I downloaded the script and am looking through it, it's kinda neat

@ekaj were you properly protected against shellshock?

Bob
@allquixotic Better question: were you vulnerable to it?
Because pretty specific circumstances are required.

I just turned that server on yesterday, I'm honestly not sure
ran a PoC on it and just got the "hello", ran it on a server I figured was vuln and I got that it was for sure

Bob
@ekaj bash vulnerable != webserver vulnerable
still good to patch, but unless you have some listening service that passes untrusted envvars to bash, it's not an immediate problem

I do have a vanilla webserver up atm

Bob
6:00 AM
@ekaj but are you calling anything by cgi?

don't believe so.. I don't know that much about webservers yet, it's just a fresh apache install

6:19 AM
Do HP laptops fail more or something ?
Everyone wants me to avoid HP

1 hour later…
7:33 AM
@HackToHell if i would be scared of anything it would be toshiba, just based on user stories, and nothing to do with fact. any manufacture can make a lemon, lots of them have :-) check out the specific model(s) of computer, or even motherboard before buying any one of them.

@Psycogeek A bunch of Java!

@Psycogeek Tried digging for mobo info, can't find anything proper

@Psycogeek Don't forget lenovo. If it was not internet, we would all be disappointed.

@HackToHell: @nhinkle seems to think so nathanhinkle.com/blog/2014/…
I've had good luck with actual thinkpads

@HackToHell, do you have any recommendations for a laptop with 4 GB RAM and 500GB+ hard disk?

7:36 AM
@jokerdino: those are pretty basic specs ._.

@jokerdino What about processor and GPU ?

i3/i5.

@JourneymanGeek I think i'll avoid HP then

@JourneymanGeek Lol, my sister doesn't care really

@jokerdino: then it shouldn't matter too much XD

7:38 AM
Then you could get an ultrabook \m/

She's particular about battery life though.

Ahh
Arn't broadwell haswell systems at something like 8 hours?

Are they in the market yet?
There are barely enough i5 models in India. Haswell is a 404

haswell are, my bad
;p
Haswell is a chip
blah
I am not braining today
there's haswell i5s I mean

Dog-on keyboard

Bob
7:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek you'd have to have an ULV at the very least

I'd guess

The ASUS and HP ones had ULVs
Bleh Thinkpads are bloody costly here

yes

@Boris_yo ya it is yava, how did you know? not my first choice but because it is so webby like, it spiders well, saving much time from bouncing link to link. i just hope it cannot "run" things or get 'sploited before i check any files downloaded with it.

Bob
!!taytaytaycat

Bob
Oh, so you got it working (@allquixotic, @TomWijsman)

Bob pls

Bob
(I didn't read far enough to get to the working part)

@Psycogeek Because it takes SO MUCH time to do an update and it loads long too. Each update is slow, did I mention that? And each update has 100s files to update.

flipkart.com/… This one has a better GPU

7:51 AM
@Boris_yo I turn off updates usually, until some item fails to work proper , then i hope the update would address it, never has, instead each update brings me more Junk like the ad in the corner, pops saying "you should buy premium (server access)" etc

The Lenovo one seems to be nice translate.google.com/…

can i ask simple questions here?

The GPU is useless :|

what's the easiest way to make a sheet of paper with lines of equal length and equal spacing
nothing but lines
all aligned

@raindrop go to store buy "grid" paper ? use wurd program, make "tables" with borders? Use paint progam , make box, and use "tiling" to fill the page (i think gimp does this well).

8:03 AM
omg! the tables in words and messing with their borders is perfect!

Bob
@raindrop depends how many you need
@Psycogeek if finer lines are required, vector art programs might work a bit better
especially if you want a specific distance between them

wow, it was so effective that I've already completed it
thanks @Psycogeek @Bob and have a great day!

@HackToHell the reviewer seems to be thourough, is russian site? In soviet union , reviews make themselves .

8:33 AM
@Psycogeek Do you know of alternative that does same but is not Java?
@Psycogeek Hey! What's the idea of having reversed notion on mother Russia?

8:48 AM
@Boris_yo I have used other spiders before, to scrape pictures (of nakid wimin) but that was long ago, on some sites it became hard to get stuff with them because of all the javascript designed to deflect roboting.

@allquixotic Hi!
I actually tried that one (I think it was), but, the output wasn't compatible/I couldn't use the .md5 file on ubuntu... It did:

<md5 has> */x/bla

or something, I tried a few things such as changing the path, but, it just kept failing/not recognising the line... Looking at Diff 3 - the main problem is, I have physical (well, RDP/SSH) to each machine, but, I can't easily set up port forwarding/log on through other means

@Boris_yo I no tell joke right, only real russian tell soviet joke right, I stick to american jokes. a rabbi a priest and a scientology major walk into a bar . . .

@allquixotic trying now...

@Psycogeek I get it. JavaScript and Java are good friends? That's why JDownloader is preferred?

@Boris_yo No , bob and quitoxe says java is not javascript and has nothing to do with eachother. (i didnt know that) . Although sure i did make that assumption.

8:55 AM
@Psycogeek Okay so JDownloader is the only downloader that doesn't block you from downloading images of nakid wimin?

@Psycogeek looks like it

@Boris_yo i do not know, have not used it for pictures much. my collection is still there and large :-) when I suck down the whole web, where do you store it?

@Psycogeek Cloud. Direct-to-Cloud. And I am not web-sucker.

Bob
@Psycogeek the actual standard is ECMAScript now, I believe - JavaScript is one specific dialect (Netscape/Mozilla), JScript is another (IE), no idea what Chrome calls theirs
But, yea, despite the name it has no relationship with Java

@Psycogeek Have inconsistent problem with cable broadcast disruptions. Happened in last months, several times per week. Reported to cable company online support twice last week. They asked if that happens at that moment, I said not at this moment. They told me to report when that happens again. It happened on Friday, I reported and today they asked me if that happens. It did not happen at that time and I said it didn't. Their reply was them being glad to help.

See logic?

9:06 AM
@Boris_yo yes they are so good at fixing it , they surprise themselves sometimes :-)

But they did not do anything I suppose. Otherwise I would not experience it again on Friday but I did. What guarantees I won't experience it again?

I have taken to not report an outage or a fail of my cable provider any more, until 2000 other people have. I got tired of telling them (more or less) your about to get some calls :-)

@Psycogeek My neighbors in same building experience same problem.

@Boris_yo when does it happen? ISPs like websites , and databases and all, will have more downtime at Night as they work on stuff while the customers are sleeping.
@Boris_yo are there any strange unmarked vans , and fast food litter showing up at the same location :-)
Funny thing about government spies, they are not, nor never will be James Bond :-) they have to eat AND pee :-)

@Psycogeek Happens throughout day but these brainless monkeys seem to fail to understand that the problem is not consistent. If it doesn't happen right now, it doesn't mean it is magically fixed. It will happen again and beyond my control.
They say from external tests they don't see any problems.

9:16 AM
@Boris_yo well here when it happens, they talk to the modem itself.
If everything is showing operational, they think it is only you.

TV modem shows them when there is no broadcast?

so they do not get "out of the office" to see what could be a disaster in the making , until it is made. Same thing with the power company, even the workers there to fix things said that this should have been maintanced long ago. Same with these Gas lines when they blow up whole neighborhoods. a corporation does not make money by continual observation of thier stuff (like say you or I might do.
@Boris_yo Oh TV ? (I thought you meant cable modem) Well the new digital boxes Know everything that is some of the point of them. "they know when you be sleeping, they know when your awake , they know if you watch to much porn, so be good for goodness sake. . . . I do not know what the level of communication is to the digital boxes, other than it Does call home.

9:31 AM
@Psycogeek I don't think they are able to see problem remotely. 22 minutes later after my report they say from their testing of equipment everything looks proper.
Conclusion is that they cannot see beyond that. So why again ask me to report and say same thing?
If they send in tech how will he find anything without me being able to reproduce the problem?

@Boris_yo squeaky wheel. Here, everything keeps going into a database for the customer. you could only hope that after enough reports to them , the customer service representitive looks at the long list of fails, and finnaly sends someone out. And of course at the same time put you on the PITA customer list :-) Another reason i quit calling, that way when it was Really Really important they would know i was not a whiner.

@Psycogeek Like you were not the boy who cried wolf?
or something...
Because PITA customers may over exaggerate things?

thats the one, if it really IS you, your connections or modem or wiring, crying wolf to many times, they may choose to ignore , then the rest of the neighborhood gets eaten :-)

They should be upfront. If they want to determine frequency of reports, say so. But don't say same BS over and over because this makes it all a joke.
@Psycogeek It's whole building. Neighbours experience same.

@Boris_yo It might help (not sure) if all the neighbors also called. When discussing among yourselves it may feel good to know your in in the same boat, but if it is sinking everyone yelling at the same time might get heard. Over the roar of the corporate engine passing by in the luxery cruiser :-)

9:45 AM
@raindrop you can actually download that sorta thing
For example printablepaper.net (where I found my very much missed french ruled paper)

@Psycogeek You make a valid point because today the power is in the hands of many - not 1 person.

As a side note: customers of the burst gas pipeline a few of them had reported smelling gas (the purfume to indicate it) , times before thier house blew up :-)

@Psycogeek Okay I get their policy now but they make mistake leading to many angry customers. The mistake is not telling their intentions to customers. In my case they asked to report again when problem happens which makes this thing a joke until I realize their intention is to aggregate as many of my reports for more information which they do to tell me. Why is it that they don't tell me? Is it against their customer communication policy? I am sure if they did,
.. they would have much less angry customers.

@Boris_yo I think that has been said about every utility company that ever existed, even movies are made with the "phone company" as the biggest evil (fun with dick and jane) I do not think the investor splitting up your dividend money cares. and if you really think about it personal care of every connection might raise the price to exorbitant.

@Psycogeek You mean if they cared for each case it would raise maintenance price to sky? So it's in company's policy to address only 20% of reports?

10:00 AM
@Boris_yo I do not know what they do there, you know. but yea, if they sent a dude out every month at $100-200 total costs to check if my copper phone lines are all in order, and meter them and maintance the connections, how will my $21 payment cover that?

@Psycogeek How about just to check without maintenance unless needed?

@Boris_yo i dont know if they can even open the rusty box :-)

@Psycogeek Most can't because it requires STR+7 at least.
Only those who have stuffy faces and big beer bellies can open it. But they are hard to dispatch due to high level of exp.

Bigger question is how can google afford to have someone drive down every street in (at least) america?

@Psycogeek You compare Google to average joe?

10:08 AM
the complaints "this map data is old" well we will just drive every street over again , each month.
The marketing doesnt help, if your selling something you are not going to say "we will try our best to accomplish . . . ." noooo, what were going to do is instead a modern miracle, until the complaints start streaming in.

10:48 AM
@Psycogeek Okay: S110 versus S120 - the difference of $80:
http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-Powershot-S110-vs-Canon-S100

Your opinion?

sheesh... don't know if I am understanding a question correctly with my answer

11:04 AM
@Boris_yo i look at the user reviews (at amazon) and wouldnt have either one :-) i am looking for what problem I could have with it, and would that drive me up the wall. you have loads of people (percentage not really that big) with the same problem , and lenses breaking and failing to retract and the auto lens cover not operaiting is sited on many of these compacts. Powershot is great design and model, but that many people cannot damage the lenses? there is a serious flaw existing

hey @Psycogeek could I check with you that I am not going completely mental?

When i read about those (not just the cannons) I become much more happy that i have stupid manuel lens cap :-(

@Omen sure you want to ask him?

@Omen You mean because i would know a psyco if i saw one ?

11:07 AM
lol
that never occurred to me... but now that you mention it...;P
this question superuser.com/questions/828524/… is my answer too much of a simplification?
i did it and it worked

@Psycogeek Yes, production with "Lens error" for products with serial number starting with 25 - 41 has been recalled/fixed. Newer series do not have this problem, so I must make sure I buy the one without those.

Ah, so that is how you do that in excell.
Usual rant though: bloody excel and date and default cell value: Excell sucks goat balls

LOL

Also fun: US and rest of the world dates.

@Hennes You know how to open Excel files in several windows?

11:12 AM
7-7-2014 is clear.

oh yes, I had to temporarily change my settings to test this... (I am in Australia)

But 8-7-2014(8 june 2014) or (7 august)

YES! that!

Fun when half of your contacts are in the US and the other half are not

@Boris_yo uhh but i read about the same problem like Years ago , oh and i see that model has been out for years. This is a good thing, because a few revisions of the same basic thing, means fixes, not more problems.

11:13 AM
I tend to use YYYY-MM-DD to defuse that, but I do not think it feels natural to either

i have to say that the OP was overcomplicating his formula

@Psycogeek Which one model?

It happens when you do not know the other way and try to solve it and keep adding stuff until it works
I do the same in excell (or open office scalc.exe) with countIF
Just add lines stating
if cell1 is this then put in value 1 in row C, else put 0
if cell2 is this then put in value 1 in row D, else put 0
Row E is a multiplication of both C and D.
So if both if conditions are matches then it is 1

just as long as I am maintaining my levelof insanity.... this is good

And then hide C and D
I am pretty sure that can be done better. But it works

11:16 AM
PowerShot S100 (SL) - Date first available at Amazon.com: August 14, 2011
Canon PowerShot S110 - Date first available at Amazon.com: September 17, 2012
assumes approx time it came out.

So @Psycogeek - my answer to that question was not nuts?

@Omen on the SU question just posted? XY solutions are appretiated by users. supplying the proper end results is better than answering the exact question the user had. Even including correcting anything else that is a bad way to do it.

soooo... I should state that he is overcomplicating it?

you wouldnt have to knock what they have done, to show or demonstrate a way better method?

did I do that?

11:30 AM
I do not know, application of the date format recognised and worked with as a date via the program, looks correct to me. the question, umm, i dont want to analise. to much brain strain :-)

I fixed up the answer and made is more third-person-ish

i don't use chairs, I levitate

I saw the same thing other people were doing with hours minutes stuff, making thier own complex formula , like any genius would do, not realsing that "time" math is also present in the program itself.

indeed
anyways, good people, i need sleep
my brain is getting tired and slurring my thoughts
good night all :)

11:47 AM
@Boris_yo large padded armrest leather highback with pnumatic lift. cheaper things from the office store, then i have to rebuild it, because i want a coushy ass, and the seat pads are never thick enough. Have to share the seat with the dog, so it had to be very special
""This week's honorable mention goes to the simple exercise ball, which many of you praised for is comfort"" JMG said something about that too, i need to try that.
or is it more like this ?

@Psycogeek This is mine:
I need to replace handles but where to get new part?

@Boris_yo nice big armrest. cut thin plywood to fit, place memory foam on plywood, stretch vinyl fabric (or leather) over, staple to plywood, bolt back on. destroy in a few years, repeat.

12:04 PM
How about this one?

lol , ok time for a new chair
Like i said i had to rebuild mine because it was no longer available and even $399 one was not the same, although it was nice for a few minutes in the store.

1:03 PM
@Psycogeek those are awesome.

Good day SuperFriends

how you doin'

I'm doing great, had an amazing weeked and just hope from eating brunch with my girlfriend at a local café
AND (more importantly) today is the day I'm gonna set up my new router!

Woo got the github student pack !
I get a free .me domain name \m/
Now begins the annoying process of thinking up a name :/.

I shall hold a private ceremony for my DIR-635 when I unplug it. It has been a trusty friend for the past 5 years
@HackToHell Congratulations, may I suggest hacktohell.me

1:14 PM
@Kristian I want a more professional one besides I already have hacktohell.org

I see. I shall http-request your index.htm immediately !
hmm, that's odd. Your site says I'm running an ad-blocker
I dont want to make the kitten cry. I like kittens (see profile pic)

Bob
@HackToHell hth.me

@Kristian just dont burry it to soon :-) cant be sure about new friends until you know them for a while.

@Psycogeek I won't! I'll make sure it gets a happy afterlife. Might even donate it to someone with inferior hardware. Probably my dad...

Bob
@HackToHell hire.me is taken :P

1:19 PM
lol
@Kristian: give it a viking funeral!

@Kristian lol, i forgot I had that, it's been so long since I posted anything there :D
@Bob lol
@Bob That might work.
And that's taken :/

@JourneymanGeek I kinda consider "giving it to dad" a viking funeral of sorts

ooh Intel has a IoT roadshow in India

@HackToHell I found a good one!
thisiswhereyoucanreadabout.me
surprisingly, not taken :P

Bob
homesweetho.me?
no idea where that came from

1:28 PM
Is there a policy against posting shortened links in chat ??

There's a meta about that
@Bob Tempted to register than one ;p
@Kristian thatiswaytoolargefor.me

@HackToHell :D
...as the dutches said to the bishop...

HI
wth, I don't have any dev experience

Neither do I ? :D

1:32 PM
ok, I dont have the mental energy to go digging for that meta, so instead I'll provide you with the un-shortened link. I came across this when browsing @HackToHells blog.. thought it was worth sharing

It's too much stress
Lol, someone checking HTH's blog out.

Oh no

ah, thank god it auto-trims

I was young and stupid

that link was making my eyes bleed
bad blogger!

1:33 PM
@Kristian cut out the analytics part of the link

but that would require thought and care. And I'd much rather spend time making a cup of coffee :|
I'm such a selfish individual on sundays

pls

okay, since you asked so nicely
now, can I remove my old entry ?

sure

and if so, how?
thanks

1:36 PM
Be a mod.

Eat bamboos

but, I cant be a mod. unless you all upvote me like madmen...

Anyone can delete their own chat messages.
(until a minute of posting it)

I was reading about Markdown earlier today. I keep getting impressed with what Aaron Swartz did

He's dead now.

1:40 PM
I know.

I know that you know.
It was supposed to make it more uhm epic ;p

imdb.com/title/tt3268458 everybody knows!

I saw that movie at PyCon :D

it's really good.
I found it very inspiring

Bob
@allquixotic I just remembered to check my modem, annnnnd it has a full shell this time :D
 > sh

BusyBox v1.17.2 (2014-01-20 09:04:09 CST) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

# ls
bin dev linuxrc proc tmp webs
data1 etc mnt sbin usr webstr0
data2    lib      opt      sys      var

1:42 PM
as opposed to an empty shell ?

Bob
@Kristian yea, the empty shell is pretty annoying
 > ls
telnetd:error:943.953:processInput:388:unrecognized command ls

esh ? :)

Damn, that was crazy
I took on 3 bosses, killed 2, had a third run away, and then got killed off by raging caragores.

what ... what was crazy ? Tell us ?

(Shadows of mordor)
I also managed to plink to death by above one of the major quest baddies.

1:44 PM
I haven't played it
but looks pretty cool

Yeah
the graphics are whoa

I haven't played anything in ages actually :(

even on my humble rig ;)

You cant mention your humble rig and not give us the specs. That's like talking about eating and not mentioning WHAT you're eating. It's just not fair.

I found this awesome game, Robocraft(f2p) which is basically minecraft with guns and airplanes

1:46 PM
brb, getting coffee

(most of the RA regulars are familiar with that system, and the story behind it ;p)

but not me!
that system is very similar to my desktop
my CPU is an i5-3570k instead, and my GFX is a 660ti but pretty damn close

(Basically I picked up a system from a dumpster, used it a while after replacing missing bits, planned to gradually build a system, got too busy, and bought everything at once. After accidentally overbudgeting for everything)
Oh, the 660 is more power efficient
I went with the i7 cause of vt-d support since I was thinking of experimenting with it
Screen's quite small/low res by modern standards so most of the graphics settings on games go up quite a bit.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Overbudgeting is always good!

@Bob: clearly ;p

Bob
1:52 PM
Who doesn't like extra money left over? :P

@Bob: Actually comparison shopping was why I didn't get a core i5

heh

I saved enough on the whole system to bump that up a notch ;p
Oh, and the free SSD

comparison shopping was what led me to not get an i7 :P
but I bought the parts seperately

Bob
Ugh. Student asked for laptop recommendations under $1k, bunch of people recommend Macbook Air. Requirements browsing & MS Office.

1:53 PM
I havent bought a pre-built desktop PC since the last millenia
(at least not for myself)

@Kristian: I paid roughly what I was expecting to pay for a core i5 at one store, on a core i7 on another.

Bob
On a budget is so not the time to splash out on the brand.

@Kristian: Last prebuilt desktop I used was a system I pulled out from a dumpster and fixed ;p

Before that, was a 486 made by a company that quit the computer business for real-estate.

1:54 PM
Anyone noticed dot?

I did that with my PS3
i.e. pulled from dumpster and fixed

Bob
@Kristian I ended up getting mine built. Actually didn't cost more than the individual parts at retail, and I get to complain if something goes wrong as a system :P

@Boris_yo there is no dot.
It must be a spec of dust on your screen ;D

(I got fed up with getting kicked off the main system. Saw this nice little dell, had some odd issues I fixed by junking parts. Had to buy a screen, a hard drive... and a nice keyboard ;p)

@Kristian I see it next to your avatar in reply dropdown.

1:55 PM
@Boris_yo obviously yes.

Oh, and the brix

@Kristian Nope, it's not.

but the brix isn't really a desktop

@Kristian Y yu hack Root Access?

nod
I was not expecting italics :/
this chat has outsmarted me

1:57 PM
Its markdown. ;p

Yes. I know.

Its entirely standard in the xkcd 927 sorta way

I am obvisouly a rookie

OMG
I love you guys

1:58 PM
(And yes, there's three different dialects of markdown in use on SE ><)

I dont usually frequent places where one can casually namedrop xkcd.
I like how the alt text is preserved in that image

Bob
Hm. I need to answer more on SF.

how did you manage that ?
