@r.tanner.f Strange people

Omg I crossed my rep cap yesterday !

Bob
hm

@OliverSalzburg Well, he's ditching on a word he misread. Though nice to know you could append /
it didn't cross my mind because I was looking for a solution where - wasn't the first character.
./ is more generic as it applies to files as well.

Bob
12:16 AM
lol
not possible to hibernate when booting from VHD
I guess the same applies to fast boot

@Bob: Yeah, the two main drawbacks.

12:28 AM
ya, the tradeoff for being able to delete your install completely at will

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm not too sure about that :P
Deleting the install will probably include fiddling with the bootloader in my case :P

@Bob: in my case at least

superuser.com/questions/493695/… - the comments for the answer...

@JourneymanGeek You know, I never got any response from Stylebot about their weird userscripts?
It seems a bit too weird to just let go :D
@JourneymanGeek Argh

@OliverSalzburg: commenting now, I think the closevotes are warranted. The downvotes arn't

I cleared the comments
Everything seems like an a rep grab or a prize grab right now
But people don't realize that there will soon be a shitton of people out there with "stupid" questions

lol
ya
oops ;p
I commented

The contest is there for a reason

1:11 AM
want me to delete?
nvm, deleted

@JourneymanGeek No, I like it...
lol

.... oops

Oh, well

@JourneymanGeek: Well, he can undelete it if you agree I think. :D

I undelete whatever I want! :D

1:12 AM
But well, yeah...
@OliverSalzburg: I'll sue you if you undelete one of my comments! j/k

Q: Will we allow "no" and "not currently possible" answers? What to do about them?

Tom WijsmanSome questions are gathering no and not currently possible answers. I don't quite feel well about them given that they don't solve the problem the OP is experiencing, and are actually the most cheap answer you can give. They often don't come without any reasoning and don't look whether there are ...

re-commented
@TomWijsman: one of mine is those ;p

Question from WP.SE that might be worth a read wrt to all the people asking Modern UI impossible things.

but I tested, and reported the results!

Q: What kind of "is there an app for X?" questions will we accept?

Tom WijsmanAbout: Is there a Pandora client for Windows Phone 7? This feels like a recommendation question, in the form of Q&A is Hard, Let’s Go Shopping!, and appears to be facing close votes. I am wondering which types of these questions we would accept... So, which types of questions will we allow ...

This one is similar wrt to the Marketplace (Windows Store), but actually just boils down to recommendations.
Er... Is the official name Windows Store or Marketplace?

Windows Store

Windows Marketplace, was a Microsoft platform for the delivery of software electronically that worked with Windows Marketplace and was secured by use of Windows Live ID. The digital locker platform was composed of four major components: #Windows Marketplace catalog #Multi merchant download cart #Digital Locker Assistant (a client side application that facilitates the download of purchased applications) #Digital Locker. For consumers, the digital locker and Windows Marketplace could be used for purchasing and downloading third party software titles compatible with Microsoft Windows, an...
Ah, Marketplace is some old website of them.

@OliverSalzburg: refined and recommented. That should hopefully prevent me-too downvotes. I still think its TL rather than NC ;p

Okay, need to make sure to use Store from now on.

Time for bed for me
It's already way too late again
...but I don't feel tired. :(

1:34 AM
Are you guys exploding with Windows 8 questions yet?

@SimonSheehan: No, it's been quiet over the last week.
@OliverSalzburg: Meh, that comment thread on my answer. >_<

@TomWijsman Ah... I haven't upgraded yet. Not sure I will yet.

@SimonSheehan: Actually, way too much questions, a lot of bad quality too...

a reminder for all you non-mods: there's a lot of... sub-par content coming in with the contest. so it goes. please make good use of the review queue, and your votes! we'll be staying on top of the flags and close queues as well as we can, but we need some help with all the extra attention we're getting

@TomWijsman uh oh.

Although it's nice to see how they almost all get answered.
It's like... You need to be around when they are asking a question or someone else might have already answered it.

1:39 AM
@TomWijsman I'll have to read that tomorrow.

Ya, if it's not deleted by then. Just don't like his ditching, especially as it's my first post there... :D

1:52 AM
@SimonSheehan: there was a massive spike at the start of the contest, and yesterday

0.5 bitcoins? I'm sold.

thats interesting
there's a google search and reader app for win8
Oh, you sneaky gits
google search app = metro web browser ;p

that's a lot of pimpin' for one site blog u.sbhat.me/R8XSix

hmm, does IE10-metro have tabs?

yes
> Share a link to a [windows-8] post with 50 referrals. Earned by 1 user
wonder who's that.

5:23 AM
not me ;p

been a week and still no response to that meta feature request

Oh, there was one in comments methinks

yeah I don't care about comments.

no no
ahh
like 'got it done' response? ;p

You just pissed him off :P

5:26 AM

"it's done" comments are rare and generally "we'll look at it" comments on child metas are like "OK OK stop whining, STFU and we'll take a look and then never bother about it"

So, it's true for meta.SU too?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Funny how that's a better MUI browser than Chrome :P

@Bob: and its standalone
well, it has an 'open in browser' option that dosen't work

Q: SNMP Traps in Windows 8

LuciferSimple Network Management Protocol traps stores each action as log files, so does Windows 8 has any new feature regarding SNMP traps ?

@jokerdino pretty much.

5:30 AM
@Sathya: sigh. running out of good questions so going for obscure ones? ;p

what the heck is this question about? Google a random service name & ask if something's changed in Win 8?

Blah. Why do they ever say we can also post on child metas then?

well, I'm checking compatibility to upgrade to Win8 now. more of a formality than anything else. I'll upgrade in a few days... meanwhile I'm running the Release Preview on my custom build...

@jokerdino: this is different though
if you haven't noticed, the mods arn't running the contest, this is SE Corporate

@JourneymanGeek point being?

5:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek I am talking about SE ignoring child metas more than meta.SO.

@studiohack: You all are wonderful people, who actually read the damned child metas, and get things done, naturally ;p

@JourneymanGeek hahahahaha :P thanks

@jokerdino: Well, I'd think child metas are more about site policy
anything that goes cross-site goes on MSO anyhow
and SE does, sorta listen
it just gets more complicated I'd think

well looks like most of my stuff is compatible. yay!

5:35 AM
The ironic part is that this is a Vista beast. :P

@studiohack: It works fine on my dumpster dell, other than the wireless USB NIC

I need to upgrade from Win7 Home Premium 32-bit to Win8 Pro 64-bit - can I do that via the upgrade assistant?

hmm, panopticlick breaks on google search app
@studiohack: I think there's a question on that

@JourneymanGeek if there isn't, I'm gonna ask it.

o0
The google search app uses IE10 as a backend

5:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek what?

nooooo

@JourneymanGeek sounds... fishy?

naw, its official
just rather odd

Bob
well, IE10 is the only fully working MUI browser

Q: Is the windows 8 upgrade 32 bit or 64bit

TheXSimply like the title says is the windows 8 upgrade 32 bit or 64bit? the one that you get with the upgrade assistant? Or is it dependent on the the system I am using to download it? 32bit system gets 32bit Windows 8, 64bit gets 64bit Windows 8? Clarification would be greatly appreciated...

5:37 AM
makes sense tho

Bob
actually, FF Elm is quite stable

:(( poorly written, by some dude who doesn't even deserve the rep.

lol
Want me to complain to him? He's on AU

I have to buy a DVD! GRRR

@studiohack: some people reported that using a trial version of windows 7 worked

5:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek of 64 bit?

I'd guess

@JourneymanGeek He's a troll

I have access to the full ISO from school

I have an upgrade copy of Win7 64 bit. but I'd have to reinstall completely, and I can't do that for a while.

@jokerdino: oh :/

5:39 AM
I thought it was pretty obvious.

lol
I wasn't paying attention

@JourneymanGeek how does the trial thingy work?
if one doesn't have the license key...

apparently if you install without a key with windows 7, it'll be in trial mode for 30 days

you know what? I'll just reinstall Win7 and make it 64, and then do an in place upgrade.

allegedly you can upgrade over that
I normally don't, I just nuke it from orbit mostly

5:41 AM
oh, I've done that - installed Win7 and then used the upgrade key to make it legal (this same key is running two Windows 7 systems)
and this seems shady, so I need to buy a key. but I haven't had problems for months

hm, dog is growing at nothing in particular

5:56 AM
hmm
forwardengineer.codeplex.com this looks promising.

6:31 AM
o0

6:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek Sup Singaporean dog'?

apparently my graphics driver crashed in windows 8
leaving me only 4:3 resolutions

@JourneymanGeek I remeber how such happened in Windows 98. It left me with 256 colors only and 60Hz resolution. Nvidia drivers it was.

@JourneymanGeek But if you have Windows 7 which is great I think, why would you need 8? Out of curiosity?

@Boris_yo: next computer may run it
trying to decide ;p

6:48 AM
There is Windows 8 upgrade for ~$64 on TigerDirect. But why not buy full install? I don't like the idea of upgrading based on previous cases with 98 to XP. Could be screwed and better to format and install from zero:

Format + Install = over 9000!
Upgrade - (Format + Install) = less than 9000!

@Boris_yo: there is only upgrade and system builder versions now

@JourneymanGeek What is system builder? OEM?
Wait! No retail?
Or only retail upgrade?
I heard that Windows 8 = Windows 7 + beautiful interface

7:02 AM
OEM, also 'retail'

@JourneymanGeek There is Retail and there is OEM that is retail. Retail can be transferred but OEM cannot.

7:27 AM

Bob
@Boris_yo There is no 'retail' now
There's system builder (OEM), and then there's system builder (personal use licence)
The personal use licence is more or less the same as the old retail one
@Boris_yo Yea, clean install is definitely much more reliable than upgrade. On the other hand, Windows 8's kernel is very similar to Windows 7 - most of the changes were in the UI. Windows XP (compared to 98) was a move from DOS to NT. That's a massive change... so I guess 7=>8 is easier :P

7:46 AM
/me thinks they figured out that most people who knew what they were doing got OEM copies anyway
@Bob: and boot process optimisations
not that we'd notice, using VHDs

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That too :P
@JourneymanGeek Not true, though
You have a whole host of people, especially now with boot camp, who wouldn't have gotten the OEM copy but can't use the upgrade

@Bob: I think that statement is sufficiently qualified ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, I guess 'knew what they were doing' != 'using non-Windows OS' :P
I missed that bit

@Bob: they'd have bought retail (if they didn't know that you could buy system builder/OEM) or OEM (if they knew you didn't have to install OEM on a fresh system)
^ see the above part ;p

8:20 AM
@Bob Yep, it is like what people saying - Windows 8 is masked Windows 7 in terms of UI and graphics. While I have expected full upgrade from engine to UI, I have got only UI which only makes Windows 8 more cumbersome for hardware and requires newer to perform smoothly.

Bob
8:38 AM
Yay!
MS has not added signature verification for Narrator :D
@Boris_yo Windows 8, in theory, has equal or lower requirements than Windows 7.
MUI apps might require better graphics capabilities than Aero (definitely needs better than Basic), I don't know, but it should work on the integrated graphics on Intel processors, so it can't be that demanding.
So, SYSTEM elevated command prompts, anyone? :D

9:02 AM
lol
@Bob: ooh, that old trick still works
@Bob: It works on a Intel GMA3000, I don't have anything crappier to try it on
(that did run 7 fine as well)
... I have that little PIV with an s3 graphics adaptor...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, no reason for it not to :P
anyone who can make that work already has admin access
whether by being admin o nthe system (and having privs to do it) or booting off a disc (and resetting the admin password)

9:50 AM
hi all
I'm wondering if someone can help me resolve an issue about failing magnetized links on Transmission, a Mac torrent client

It's a cross platform torrent client.

I'm sorry, I meant that I have this issue on a mac. Didn't know there were other versions of Transmission

Other than that, I can't help you anymore :P

Bob
Our OS X users seem to be missing right now :P

They ALL went to a party last night? :P

Bob
9:55 AM
Party? Why?

Windows 8 release.

Bob
That's a reason for a party? :S

Demise of Windows?

No to celebrate the 'awesome new' products of course
Oh wait, I forgot the sarcasm tag

Bob
Hm.. demise.. probably not.
MS has just pulled a Vista, they're probably gonna pull another 7 soon :P

9:56 AM
That's what most non-Windows users say anyway.

I'm a mac user and I tried Win8 on a vm and I quite like it actually

Bob
That's the thing. Win8 seems to be targeted more towards non-Windows users :\

I listened to ABBA songs today and I liked it pretty well.

Bob
Also, VMs just don't do it justice :P (I still prefer 7. Heck, even OpenSUSE if KDE would just stop bugging out on me)

9:58 AM
Well with the developments in OS X lately I'm starting to think about switching back :P

Bob
Hm? What's happening on Apple's side?

Developments in OS X? Is that a joke?

First of all: notification center
I mean
What the hell
Like I need a full notification bar with e-mail, facebook and twitter previews on the side of my desktop

Sounds so much like Ubuntu's notifyOSD.

10:00 AM
Windows Vista had a similar thing with the widgets

@LeClerq: If i ended up not liking 8, I'd have probably gone with 7 for gaming, and linux for everything else

Okay on the risk of getting kicked out: I use a PS3 for gaming, a Macbook Air for home computing and a Win7 laptop for work

lol
why would we kick you out?

Bob
@LeClerq Well, the widgets were never a big thing :\

SU is entirely platform agnostic as long as it fits a certain value of computer.

Bob
10:02 AM
They end up being hidden/ignored/removed most of the time :P
Win8's notifications are interesting, though

@Bob exactly! same thing happens with notification center

I can actually work with metro apps. Now, this whole start screen thing needs me to get used to it

Yes I really like the live tile thing

(and ironically my current killer app is by google... and runs off IE10)

Bob
lol

10:03 AM
@LeClerq: the context switching is annoying tho

Bob
I actually rather like FF's MUI browser

lol I might, if I had gotten it running

Bob
the UI could use some improvements, but the thing is so smooth
@JourneymanGeek still can't figure that out.. yours just launches the desktop version?

ya ;p
I think i'll wait for it to actually release
I'm too old to run betas ;p

Bob
Does it look like that on the start screen?

10:05 AM
... nope

Firefox Nightly..

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Might take half a year at this rate :P

what do you guys think of surface?

Why does it have the Firefox logo?

I can wait ;p

Bob
10:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek It should. That's the MUI style icon

@LeClerq: I really hope I win one.
;p
then again, I love MS's hardware
its their software I have a love/hate relationship with

Bob
@LeClerq Surface Pro sounds/looks nice. Surface RT is a little too limited for my tastes right now

@Bob: Surface RT sounds interesting cause a good chunk of what I use windows for is Office ;p

Bob

Surface RT actually does look more promising from a business point of view, I guess
more than iPad I meant

Bob
10:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek if the icon looks more like that (Desktop icon on background), you don't have it registered properly as a MUI app
@LeClerq Definitely, considering MSOffice is the de facto standard
As long as that part works well (and email/exchange), most businesses couldn't be happier with the restrictions

also, it should integrate tightly with the rest of the office machines
roaming profiles, remote management, stuff like that

Bob
And, from a business point of view, you need to be able to type well. I don't know about Surface without the type cover, but touch typing is nigh impossible with iPads and Android tablets

(I'm not a systems engineer as you can hear ;))

Bob
@LeClerq Surface RT can't join a domain, IIRC
that could be a problem

Oh... well that's a shame

10:12 AM
@Bob: type cover reviews seem good

it would be the perfect, low cost solution for companies who have needy employees wanting 'a tablet with everything'

Isn't that only for ARM hardware?

naw, its also for PCs
but I hate talking about UEFI since Its not 'bios' and calling it UEFI firmware is a bit redundant

Bob
...that all caps thing..
it looks nice in the MUI apps, so far
it looks horrible (to me) on Office/VS

Bob

Q: How do I get rid of all caps ribbon titles in Office 2013 on Windows 8?

KirkInstalled Office 2013 on Windows 8 today. It's great, except for one thing, the all caps ribbon titles are inconsistent with the title case titles everywhere else in Windows 8. Is there a registry setting that will let me change this? http://i.imgur.com/K7as6.jpg [

sharptoothHere's how Microsoft new Windows Azure portal elements look like: and that seems to be "Windows 8 style". Visual Studio 2012 also has plenty of user elements in ALL CAPS. For dozens of years ALL CAPS was considered yelling and just bad style and now suddenly ALL CAPS is everywhere. Is there ...

Especially this:

oh dear
that IS HORRIBLE

Bob
yup
One of the User Experience answers makes a good point about it looking nice/working well on MUI. But on Desktop? NO NO NONONONO

Bob
10:38 AM
huh
MUI FF, Win + Q = Google search :D
@JourneymanGeek Have you tried a complete uninstall of FF, download the Elm Nightly again and try to install?
I get the feeling you missed something :\

@Bob: hmm, no. I'll probably try when I nuke this thing;p
which should be a while, I have a crusader no remorse game going on that desktop ;p
giant bunny ears of DOOM

Wait wait wait
How do you uninstall an OS?!

Q: Problems with uninstallation of windows 8

A: Windows 8 disk space usage vs Windows 7

Graham WagerThe Test To try and make a fair comparison, I went for Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 versus Windows 8 Enterprise. These are the most full-featured editions of the respective operating systems available, so could be considered as a "worst-case scenario". SP-1 was already slipstreamed into the Windows 7 ...

hw bored am I today?
*how

@GrahamWager: more bored than I was

11:16 AM
I'm starting to think we need a "how do I access the Charms bar?" question, just to link from all the other questions where the answer starts with "in the charms bar"...getting fed up of typing it out lol

lol
I think only one of my answers involved that
suprisingly

Bob
@GrahamWager Go ask it! :P

apparently only 3 of mind have actually, it just feels like more...

@Bob: duplicate of the shortcuts question of doom

Bob
:\
not really
charms bar can be opened by a shortcut
but there's a gesture too!
and it would be nice to have an answer that includes what the charms bar is

11:21 AM
i'll do it lol, if it gets closed, it gets closed :)

Bob
huh
that's the first time I've ever offered a bounty
lol @JourneymanGeek on a retagging spree

@Bob: 'spree'?
going back to trickling in edits every hour as I was before the contest ;p

Bob
well, I just happened to click on a few

at most 5
my tactic is 5 every hour or so, when I remember ;p

huh
yay, t-shirt
do they even ship to Aus?

Q: What is the Charms Bar?

Graham WagerI've seen a number of references to the "Charms Bar" in discussion about Windows 8. What is it, and how is it accessed?

Bob
looks fine

I've edited links into my Charms Bar related answers too

Bob
Ok, FF MUI needs a lot of keyboard shortcut work
and the tab list is hard to open
hm, missing scrollbar
and not sure about plugin support
we'll be lucky to have FF MUI by this time next year at this rate :\
I guess, at the very least it works

11:48 AM
lol
'works'
I'm almost certain this whole 'only the default browser can use metro' malarchy is a way to make people use IE :p

Bob
my solution? Don't use metro browsers at all :P
One part of FF MUI that does work is a convenient button to open in the desktop browser

lol
If I need a metro 'browser' I'll just use the google app

Bob
Can you set that as default?

nope
don't need to
actually thats the neat thing
though for some reason reader won't load on it

I hope it's not a dupe
I kinda just want to avoid the MUI browsers entirely for now

11:56 AM
Is that cool or what?

Bob
lol
yup
damn it, now I'm getting ideas :P
the left side of my screen was already reserved for IM+
I need more snapping

Oh, you can do aerosnap in the desktop too
the only annoying thing with this is needing to hit send to send
