12:47 AM
What happens when you use a Windows key on another computer, when you've already used it on a different, functioning PC?
does the first PC (the functioning one, PC-A) work? or does it get deactivated?

@studiohack, not following the setup. This is a one keyboard, two boxes layout?

@soandos let me start over... PC-A - my main machine, has activated Windows, genuine and everything. On my custom build (PC-B), I installed Windows 7, and wasn't planning to keep it, but I tried using the Win7 upgrade license key I have, I thought it would fail, but was curious to see what it would do... it activated! so... now I'm worried that I'll lose the license for PC-A

@studiohack, that makes much more sense. I thought you were talking about the windows key on the keyboard ;). You will not lose the licence to PC-A. From a practical standpoint, it would allow all serial keys that are available on the internet to be used to activate every machine (and then disabling updates would keep them activated).

lulz, the win7 install hanging was because I'm an idiot. >_<

@soandos LOL! :P Not sure what you mean by your last sentence? meaning that as long as I don't run Windows Update, I'm fine and legal?
is it even legal in the first place?
@RebeccaChernoff what happened? and you're not the only one (:

1:01 AM
@studiohack, Its a reason that the first machine (or probably even the second machine) will be deactivated. I don't think that it was supposed to happen (or know if it is legal).

@studiohack When the setup asked me which drive to install to, I was so caught up in checking to make sure the right number of drives were listed / the raid was presented correctly, that I installed the os to that instead of the ssd I meant to use...and I didn't load the raid array driver that the setup would need.

@RebeccaChernoff sounds complicated :) I bet I would miss that too, RAID confuses me a lot
@soandos then how do you know that the first machine won't be deactivated?

160gb and 1tb are so close in size to each other, it's obvious why I was confused.
|:

@RebeccaChernoff really? because of the RAID array?

I was being sarcastic. (:

1:03 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I wondered :P

anyways, just re-ran the setup and pointed it at the proper drive this time and it worked
well
after that I wondered why it was hanging on a black screen...until I realized it switched to a different monitor that I had on a different input
>_<
my idiocy has been showing in full force today, lol

I'm glad to hear that you're getting it all worked out - that's a huge relief :)

@studiohack, When you use windows updates, microsoft records something that identifies the hardware configuration so that you can download the update as many times as you want, but another computer using your serial will be detected. In that way, it knows which computer had the key "first" and will leave it alone.

@studiohack yeah...I much prefer the "working" state to the "broken" state!

@RebeccaChernoff my custom build has this weird thing where if all the RAM slots are filled, then Windows Setup is super slow, i.e. takes all night. whereas if I run it with one slot, it zips through
@soandos ohhh, neat! and tricky :P
sounds like I'll be deactivated on PC-B then :P which is legal and what's supposed to happen lol
I just have a hard time forking over $100 for a Windows license

1:07 AM
@studiohack interesting. the setup did seem slower than I expected.

Maybe. In all honesty, you should never have been able to activate it. Not sure what is going wierd

@RebeccaChernoff I've run Windows Memory Diag. and it tells me I have hardware problems, so it may be a local RAM thing... but I've tried different sticks, to no avail. just something I have to work around

does it report/use all the memory?

@soandos I suspect it is because PC-A is a Vista upgraded to 7... so it may be using Windows Vista's to work... and the 7 upgrade key on another PC

Could be, but I am kinda surprised they did not think of that.

1:09 AM
@RebeccaChernoff once installed, and the OS up and running, yes. Win8 and Win7 have no problems, boot very quickly, and show and use all 4 GB
@soandos thanks for the info, appreciate it. I'm not sure if it is legal or not to use this key, am tempted to experiment, but I still want to be above board :P

I would ask them, but I don't think its legal

that's how I'm leaning, that it is illegal

only 4gb? painful.

@studiohack: tried memtest for checking the memory?
lol

@RebeccaChernoff I'm only using 3.5 on my x86 laptop, need to reinstall, but have crucial, time-related stuff I have to deal with on the HDD first...
the custom has 4 - max supported is 8GB, but that is DDR2 RAM so it will cost me a good $100 bucks to do that
@JourneymanGeek not memtest... I should, shouldn;t I? :)

1:12 AM
@studiohack: Well, probably worth it, IMO

win7 64bit on 4gb is tough. I went playing with things like disabling aero and just about anything I could so that I wasn't sitting at like 75%...and that was before opening things like VS etc.

ahh, I've got 32 bit on my 4gb system
been putting off upgrading to 32 bit

@JourneymanGeek I need to...

now the hard part...remembering all the stuff you should do "first" with a fresh system.

@RebeccaChernoff I'm not surprised... what processor do you have?
oh that's easy compared to what you've been through @RebeccaChernoff :)

1:14 AM
@studiohack on the 4gb asus laptop or my desktop?

your desktop, that you've had issues with, the win7 64-bit system you were referring to?

@studiohack lol. I've gotten as far as running windows update a million times+restarts until it quits yelling. man that's annoying.

@RebeccaChernoff: 4gb on my x220 ;p

the disabling aero and stuff was on my 4gb asus laptop
the desktop I just refreshed has an i7 920

@RebeccaChernoff yeah, if you do that first, it sure saves a world of pain
oh, what processor then?
Core 2 Duo?

1:15 AM
@Ell: I suspect the most obvious way to check if its a headphone or speaker is to somehow check the impedance

I think between Windows 8 Dev and the Beta next month, I'll run that until it get's released, and then buy it
no point in buying Windows 7 now...
though I will be buying an upgrade copy for my other machine so...

I thought about win8 for about 2 seconds, but figured I'd stick with win7.
what do you think of it?

@RebeccaChernoff definitely for touch devices. I'm a little bit frustrated with it, for non touch systems. and I hate the suspended programs thing, can't figure out how to get out of things. if I, as a Windows geek, can't figure this out easily, then the broader public is gonna hate it. I worry it will be another Vista - only instead of driver and compatibility issues, it will be the UI
which is why, my next laptop (hopefully in 2-3 years if this one holds up) will be a laptop.tablet cross

I'm with @studiohack. (move mouse to the left hand side helps, as does win+D)

@soandos I know, but that's it! I hate that I have to know that in order to get out
The start menu is awesome, if they would make it a little easier to work with the desktop

1:21 AM
also Ctrl + shift + esc (brings up task manager), and I think there was one more way to do it, but I can't recall
seems very clunky for mice
You can turn off the metro interface though (that is what I ended up doing)

but... it is a Dev Preview. I'm hoping they really change things up by the time they hit Release Candidate
@soandos how does that work with the metro programs? do those disappear too?

Doubtful that the whole desktop layout thing will change that radically

no more suspended programs?

@studiohack i3 iirc

@soandos that's what I think to.. but one can hope :)
@RebeccaChernoff wow, really? I'm still on Core 2 Duos :)
Win8 runs great on 64 bit - 4GB, okay on 1GB

1:23 AM
No. Programs still suspend, and you can still run metro programs, but the default desktop is "normal" and metro programs are windowed or something (forget how it works, its been a while)
What is wrong with suspended programs?

because when I do Aero flip, or change programs, they are there.
and when I kill a program, I want it gone

ok, what essential programs should I be grabbing right now? </lazyweb> (:

like when you do that left click slide thingy, @soandos, they show up IIRC
@RebeccaChernoff use Ninite for VLC, Flash, and some other crucial programs
Office... Firefox. Zune. Skype

I don't necessarily mind the installers...more just coming up with the list
plus, things like that, I always wonder if I'm getting the version I should be getting.

well, look at Ninite's website, and it'll show you the programs included, that'll give you some ideas

1:26 AM
@studiohack, yeah, but that has to be a defect in understanding on our part. There HAS to be a way to actually close programs

you don't even have to use it.
@RebeccaChernoff I know, I've wondered the same. I've never used it myself :)
@soandos End Process a pain, yes.

There has to be a better way.
They cannot make the UX that bad

we'll see soon enough I guess. I probably just need to google more
Win7 Pro worth the extra money? over Home Premium? for geeks?

@studiohack "actual" programs are easy. security things like spybot...always have trouble remembering those

@RebeccaChernoff that's easy! Microsoft Security Essentials beats the pack, by far
Malwarebytes, and Spybot are also good to run once in a while... don't need much more than that

1:33 AM
@studiohack, Pro would not do anything more for me really, happy with home premium. Second MSE

hmm really? have not used MSE.

@soandos I dislike that I can't backup on the network, or join domains
other than that, I like Home Premium

Do you really need to?

@RebeccaChernoff you're kidding. it's really good
@soandos not really. I don't run a domain anymore (I tried, and gave up - no Pro machines) and backup over the network, I do a different way

speaking of backups...something else to setup haha

1:35 AM
I mean another reason to go pro is if you need 192GB of RAM, but I wish I had that issue ;)

@RebeccaChernoff CrashPlan seems really good - doesn't quite work for me, but something with a really good free part that is worth looking into
@soandos nope :)

well if you say that, I can't resist asking why it doesn't quite work for you. (;

@RebeccaChernoff hmmm, let's see if my old brain can remember...
oh, it won't let me back up to a networked drive
which is my backup solution - I have Fedora 14 running a home server on an old Intel Xeon box

really?
> Use CrashPlan to quickly back up to a storage device connected your computer, such as a shared folder on your network, an external hard drive or a memory stick. CrashPlan calls this type of destination a folder.

not the free version - I tried a folder, but no... wait, maybe it will let me use a folder inside the networked drive @RebeccaChernoff

1:43 AM
hmm, if true, that isn't clear from crashplan.com/consumer/compare.html

ahhh, see each folder on my server (each major folder that is, ie Pictures, Docs, etc) is mapped as a separate drive, so... I could be fooling it.
I'll try again @RebeccaChernoff

lol
I'm not forcing you or even attempting to get you to
too busy looking at what to use myself to worry about you q:

LOL @RebeccaChernoff I know :) my current solution (SyncToy by Microsoft) is not automatic, but you gave me an idea on how to get crashplan to work :P
looks like I have to reinstall it.
For a Print to PDF solution @RebeccaChernoff - use CutePDFWriter, free, awesome.

for a PDF reader, use Sumatra or Foxit Reader

1:47 AM
@studiohack: and not annoying. I use PDF forge as a backup

PDF Forge? which is?

@studiohack, is there a real difference between Foxit, cutePDF, and all the other PDF printers?

For an uninstaller, use Revo Uninstaller, Freeware version

revo's awesome

eh, PDF xchange viewer > foxit , just watch out for the toolbar it tries to install

1:47 AM
saved me several times

@soandos not really, just recommending what I use

@studiohack : PDF printer

ah nice

@soandos: foxit shows PDFs, cutepdf makes em

I use Foxit to read, CutePDF to print

1:48 AM
nearly every pdf printer except adobe is a front end to ghostscript

I belive Foxit can print also

@RebeccaChernoff DriveImageXML for a free imaging solution
get CCleaner... get ManicTime to track your time and bill SE ;)
all this stuff is free - I hold a bronze tag in [software-rec], I know what's out there

@RebeccaChernoff cheers :) any other software solutions you looking for?

anything and everything, of course (:

1:52 AM
want me to keep recommending off my own list of programs? or throwing things out there @RebeccaChernoff? :P

I'm always up for suggestions...even when not starting from scratch

I guess I'll throw in bulk rename, which does exactly what its name implies, but with many many options, and a preview

okay... hmmm
Daemon Tools Lite if you need to mount any files, like an iso... works well
TERACOPY! one of my all time favorite programs, I use it daily
basically replaces the Windows shell copy dialog, and is much much faster. has a whole slew of options

Resume being very useful

Connectify and VirtualRouter are awesome if you want to create a wifi network on the go
you can take a ethernet port, plug it into a Win7 or higher machine (desktop or laptop) with wireless capabilities, and have an entire network

1:57 AM
does that have any value with a wifi router?

TimeComX is automation software - drop dead simple - like shut down computer after 6 hours
@RebeccaChernoff no, it doesn't need a wifi router
not sure what you mean though?

no, I mean, if I already have a wifi router

no, it doesn't... it's useful if you have roomies or at college, that type of thing - just one of those things good to have if you need it (on a laptop) or at conferences/trade shows
I really like ImgBurn, (for burning .iso's) but the Win7 built in one does it well
SyncToy is incredible, a PowerToy by Microsoft... very very configurable - let's you sync things, in a variety of ways (Sync, Echo, etc)
Audacity is really good, very impressive. for audio editing.

@studiohack, what is wrong with the ad-hoc network that windows lets you create?

TightVNC is a great VNC solution
@soandos I've used that, that works surprisingly well. but, it is slightly more complicated, and you can't connect more than one device (IIRC) to it. I also can't connect my mobile devices to it

2:02 AM
installing teracopy (:

@studiohack, you can conect as many devices as you want to it. Done it many times for LAN games

@RebeccaChernoff I've heard there is another alternative to TeraCopy that's even faster, but I'm content, I really like it
you can configure the colors, just so you know ;)
Driver max if you want to backup and restore drivers
Microsoft Math (used to be $50, now free) if you're taking any math courses, it is also a software graphing calculator. really cool
LogMeIn is by far, the best remote login solution for non professionals (and machines that are Home versions, etc), the free version works well
LogonStudio, by StarDock is great for customizing your logon screen in Windows 7, works well, you can save and reused different photos. Don't have to log out and back in either. very fun
Input Director, a Windows-only version of Synergy is a good alternative for using one mouse and keyboard for multiple systems

got anything for managing rdc connections? remote desktop manager is one I've used in the past

even better is MouseWithoutBorders - a new Microsoft, Synergy program
@RebeccaChernoff not that I know of... hmmm

worthless q:

2:07 AM
what is worthless? @RebeccaChernoff

I was being sarcastic again (:

are you looking for a remote desktop solution?

(about you not having an rdc suggestion)

something to replace RDC? or something to manage the one built into Windows?
ah, :P I know everything but :P
like, you can use LogMeIn to replace RDC

nah, I use it for managing them remotedesktopmanager.com

2:09 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I've never seen anything like that, it looks pretty cool. so you can't blame me :)

did you decide to go with MSE @RebeccaChernoff?

yeah, I grabbed it

awesome :)

have you heard of Ditto?

2:17 AM
nahhh, @RebeccaChernoff I was right. I click "Folders" in CrashPlan and it only shows my three partitions for my actual internal HDD, doesn't show my 5-6 networked drives. :( so there you go
@RebeccaChernoff no?
Clipboard manager? ditto-cp.sourceforge.net sounds cool - checking it out

I don't know how else to interpret "Use CrashPlan to quickly back up to a storage device connected your computer, such as a shared folder on your network, an external hard drive or a memory stick. CrashPlan calls this type of destination a folder." then. odd.

@RebeccaChernoff A) a pro feature or B) I'm not set up right. I highly doubt it is B though
hey @KronoS!

yo yo... what's up?

@studiohack yes. it's amazing. and that doesn't cover it. (:
that's my recommendation contribution (:

@RebeccaChernoff giving it a shot! :) thanks :P
@KronoS not much, recommending programs for @RebeccaChernoff to use on her new PC - got a top must have program?

2:20 AM
@KronoS, your flair on your profile is broken

(preferably free)

@soandos ya I know... that's what I get for being dead to the online world for a while

Just cleaned the dust out of my computer. I just had a psychological moment... even the display looked cleaner when I booted it up, somehow. :P

@studiohack @RebeccaChernoff PC or Mac? what are you using it for?

anybody use a keyboard launcher? promptulauncher.com is good

2:21 AM
@KronoS PC - just general stuff

pc - work and personal

@RebeccaChernoff I use Executor. am bummed because it doesn't support 64-bit well
@RebeccaChernoff that looks cool!

I see... I really like fences:
that's the download... here's a descrip:

I never use my desktop

2:22 AM
never ever

@KronoS. I have Fences on my laptop. Real nice.

@RebeccaChernoff I didn't either until I got this...

everything goes to my desktop for me to deal with later :P

ok that's not true. just extremely extremely rarely

@sidran32 ya it makes life nice...

2:23 AM
@RebeccaChernoff if it is portable, how do you get it to run on boot and use it?

@KronoS Definitely.

Everyone really likes Launchy
hey @sidran32

I'm actually trying to figure out the whole mac thing... just got one last week

@KronoS wow- how's that going?

it's.... different...

2:25 AM
@studiohack hmm? I just use the thing! it's got an installer.

I like it a lot for some things, but for others not so much
but it's my only option for programming iOS apps

@RebeccaChernoff it says portable version? I'll look around again

Hi @studiohack. I updated part 3 of my blog post. Now it has a final and recent (as of today) photo of the inside of my computer. And it also actually says what software I use for backups. :P

ahh, stupid me, @RebeccaChernoff. found it :)

Since I had the thing open and on my desk while cleaning out dust, I figured I might as well snap a photo

2:26 AM
@sidran32 awesome! :) what software do you use (considering we're on the subject of favorite software) for backup?

Acronis TrueImage Home :)

@sidran32 an image or backup files or?
is it free?

Real nice software. I got it for my parents, too.
It's $50. I do incremental image backups.
It's scheduled for to do it a few times a week. Amazingly hassle-free.

nice
okay CrashPlan. you're outta here.

Though I had to get a 3 TB external drive for it. :P But over USB3.0, it's not very intrusive at all.
What's CrashPlan?

2:28 AM
If you set your Docs/Downloads/Photos etc locations to a different drive, and then change the drive letter, does that automatically follow or do you have to go in and change the locations again?

a backup solution that is really neat, but doesn't work for me

Ah
@RebeccaChernoff I have no idea. I never did that.

@RebeccaChernoff still trying to understand it... thinking... I would say no, it will probably break. but if it is a non critical system drive (as in, won't make the system crash) you could try it

I only back up my C: drive.
@studiohack By the way, you can do file backup or image backup, and it can be full backup, incremental backup, or differential backup.
Lots of customizations you can do.

@sidran32 it'd better for $50 ;P

2:29 AM
:P

I think you have to install the uninstaller first :-)

@Psycogeek I already did that

my drive letters are all funky. os=c, osbackup = d, databackup = e, data = l, dvd = f, usb stick = k. I don't really feel like messing with them now, but I want to move my libraries from C to L which won't stay L
oh well

@Psycogeek, @SimonSheehan, turns out the issue with the PCI cards was the OS. Win7 handles it fine. Win8? nope.
wayy funny. and true

Wow! Typical of crappy Micro$oft! :P

2:34 AM
@studiohack another one bites the dust. were the drivers different?

Can't even make an OS that works! :P

@Psycogeek I suspect so
@sidran32 I know, but at the same time, I'm giving MS a break since it is not even Beta

Microsoft will make something that doesn't suck when they launch a line of vacuum cleaners!
@studiohack I know. I'm just razzing anyway. :P

How dare they make a beta experiental OS that dosen't work perfectly?
;p

Exactly, @JourneymanGeek! :)

2:35 AM
LOL, I know, right?

@JourneymanGeek I always have to wait till SP1 (at least) luckily there are many millions of beta testers out there.
its just to bad that MS doesnt listen to them :-)

Totally switching gears, I picked up a bottle of Mexican Orange Fanta at the local Price Chopper today. It's actually made with cane sugar. So delicious! :)

@Psycogeek: MS's newer release stratergy - with a pre-release and a open beta seems to work
... you make "its actually made with cane sugar" sound like its special

I agree. Microsoft's release strategy these days has done them lots of good.

YOU MUST BE AMERICAN

2:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think I am >.>

Many eyes isn't just for code XD

is debating buying Win7 and then upgrading to Win8 or waiting

lol
I am hoping win8 gets released and MSDNAAed before i graduate

@JourneymanGeek that'd be nice

though, when i do i'll be getting a technet subscription

2:37 AM
$$$$ no money

You get MSDNAA with your school, @JourneymanGeek? Nice!

@sidran32: everything but office

That's what I got too

the school i was in in the UK included office iirc ;p

Ah :P
Mine includes Microsoft OneNote but that's it for Office programs.

2:39 AM
I'll get MSDNAA in two years, hopefully :P
OneNote is worth it

Stupid nervious beakdown

OneNote is amazing.
Ya, @JourneymanGeek :(
I used OneNote on my laptop/tablet for my whole final year of college. Did 100% of my note-taking on it, and some of my homework. Really nice software.

XD
early 2013

Actually, I think all my math homework was done on OneNote.

then a job ASAP. I'm sick of not being able to do the stuff i love ;p

2:40 AM
mmhm

On the bright side, hardware prices should fall further by then ;p

:P
Heh, I splurged today and ordered a Logitech G27 racing wheel & Gran Turismo 5. >.>

I've wanted a racing wheel since I got Need For Speed 3 Hot Pursuit for my computer back around 2000ish. I played the first Gran Turismo on the Playstation. I'll see if I still like it. :P

does it have pedals ? ;p

2:43 AM
Yes and a shifter :P

Fancy! ^^

900 degrees of turn on the wheel. :D
I think I will enjoy this thing :)

lol
in case you need to park? ;p

:P

oh btw @studiohack, I forgot to mention, you can use that remote desktop manager with more than just rdc...you mentioned LogMeIn...just saw that in the menu

2:49 AM
I'll bbl. I'm going to turn off my case fans and see if it changes idle temps too much. :P

@RebeccaChernoff I saw that... thanks :)
I want to use RDC, but I can't since I don't have Pro versions of Windows
costs $400 to finish my build to where I'd like it :(
if I spend $100 over the next four years, I'll be set. and that doesn't even count the monitors
/sarcasm

ow
@studiohack: what else are you going to need?

nothing I need, though I really should get a CD drive (the one I scrapped from another pc is a dvd drive only)

to upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB, I need $100

2:58 AM
most DVD drives play cds
0o
DDr2?

to get Windows, I need another $100
yes @JourneymanGeek

ahh
windows, i can sort of help with ;p

I'll test the DVD drive again - I tried using an cd burned with an iso that I made, it is used, and I always thought I'd just get nice, new one for ~$20
