@studiohack Did you end up sticking to firefox? :P

12:35 AM
@SimonSheehan yes I did - reinstalled after uninstalling everything with Revo - gonna keep Chromium on hand though as an alternate browser and use it some...I feel better that its not Google's direct product...

@studiohack indeed... are you not a fan of google for some things?

@SimonSheehan dislike their big bro polices...
you know they read your gmail and then give you customized ads

@studiohack They read it? Ugh... I feel so violated now. I regret switching to it all of a sudden for use with everything :/

did I mention Firefox is a lot faster? had a lot of junk in there - still need to reinstall Windows though

Ahh...

12:38 AM
@SimonSheehan there is a funny but true youtube video about that - let me find it, I think you would like it :)

@studiohack I'm using Nightly :) its awesome
@studiohack okay!
@studiohack ^

@SimonSheehan here's the article about it on ZDnet by Mary Jo Foley - it was a creation of Microsoft, and a very good one :P (video in the link): zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/…
nightly looks awesome, you mentioned that earlier but I didn't get to reply to it... how is that? is it stable? can you use addons? faster?

@studiohack I crash LESS on these nightly builds.. I'm months ahead of the normal FF release too! You can still use addons, in fact you get to test addons and make sure they still work on this version too

@SimonSheehan oh? will all of them work, or do you have to "force" them?

@studiohack By default it makes it so addons marked as not compatible will be installed... you can then mark them as working or not working.

12:45 AM
studiohack's hands are slow to type since he's been outside working - but his brain is running much faster :P
@SimonSheehan interesting...I assume it does it over top of my existing installation?

@studiohack Nope. You get 2 installs. They also have x64 builds of it. Only thing you need is x64 flash (which is now packaged with x86 i think...)
@studiohack Also, funny video :P Although I'm not entirely sure I believe it, i was amused

@SimonSheehan I think there is a ring of truth - like you said, not necessarily all true
@SimonSheehan nice! another reason i need to reinstall windows, I upgraded the ram in my machine from 3 to 4 GB, but still on a 32 bit OS
I'll try the nightly - thanks!

@studiohack considering it is from Microsoft... :P They would of course want to bash GMail so people use hotmail ;)

As an avid Firefox user since it began, I’ve developed a great liking towards the browser and its consistent updates. As version 3.6 phased into a 4.0 Beta, I just had to try it out. But then I thought to myself: If i like to try out the new beta’s, why not just go to the bleeding edge? And with that, my journey began – Welcome to Nightly.

Here was our first glance at the new Firefox, bumped up to version 7 already, while most of us are still transitioning to 4.

Many of you are probably saying, “Now Simon, whats so different? Wheres the fancy UI changes?!” …

@SimonSheehan well, duh! SU Blog to the rescue! :)

haha, the answer to everything!

12:49 AM
lol
reading it now -love the about:memory like you just showed me in Chromium

:D yeah, i thought it was a great feature.
There's even MORE to that page now
Since what your seeing was of Version 7 - what you are currently running now

it says nightly is already running - do I need to close FF 7 Stable?
yeah, very well done blog post, btw

thanks! I haven't been able to write much in a while though :(

@SimonSheehan its possible I'll write about my PC build - if I do, SU will sponsor it...

@studiohack Indeed! You should :D

12:52 AM
or part of, at least... but I'm not sure how to write about it - how involved or what "angle" I should write from, since there are already a million posts about how to build a pC

@studiohack What parts did you end up getting? Didn't you get Jeff's i7 or something?

@SimonSheehan the Core 2 Duo pile

Oh yeah... What did you end up building in total at the end?
It wants me to login :/

I shall though.

12:53 AM
@SimonSheehan oh? you shouldn't need an account to see that? that's supposed to be the public URL

@studiohack It said I have to be your friend :P

What? I just looked at it without signing in

:S
"This document is only shared with friends on Windows Live"

working on permissions @SimonSheehan - sorry - looking into it

@studiohack Sounds good! If all else fails you can just email it or whatever works :p

12:56 AM
that ^^ work?

URL must have expired or something... ah well.

@studiohack not gaming much eh?

@SimonSheehan last time I gamed was almost a year ago - and that was Civ IV

@studiohack Ah... I did notice you are using an Nvidia Board or something, but an ATI card.

12:57 AM
I don't game :P - why do you ask? not powerful enough of a build?

@studiohack No no... just most people building PC's these days get super high powered GPU's, and you just have a simpler one :P
Also, Blu-Ray Players make an appearance on SU!

Q: The necessity of component video cables

AnnaI just bought a blue ray player. When I went to set it up, it turns out they don't include all the cables needed. It says you need a component video cable to get the HD signal. However, I read elsewhere that if your audio/video cable is under 6 feet, you can get the same signal without bothering ...

@SimonSheehan as long as it handles triple monitor setup, I'm good... nhinkle actually showed me this one, he's using the same card...

@studiohack Oh neat. I've got a GT 220....some rebranded Nvidia crap :P
Which I do some gaming on until its roaring and making odd noises ;)

hahahahaha

@studiohack Care to help out with that question? Pile up those votes!

1:01 AM
whee! @SimonSheehan:
> closed as off topic by Simon Sheehan, studiohack♦ just now

@studiohack Teamwork! :P

the diamond fits inside the k at the end of my name in plain text :P
@SimonSheehan yup! question: any ideas on an angle to write about a PC build for?
probably going to slowly save money and buy the parts gradually, and make it a Windows 8 machine

@studiohack Well maybe you should write it from the view of someone who is building it not for gaming... We've all seen the million posts on building THE ULTIMATE BUDGET GAMING PC, so that might be nice.
@studiohack I'm skipping Windows 8... Will likely move to OS X / Linux

@SimonSheehan but I'm not using it for anything in particular, except as a future W8 triple monitor setup for being a moderator and web browsing and power to do light graphic editing and photos...
@SimonSheehan are you running Windows 7 now? or Fedora?

@studiohack Is this your first PC build?
@studiohack Windows 7... dual booting is too much of a pain when you share PC's with 4 people :/
I've been an on and off Fedora user since age 7

1:05 AM
@SimonSheehan yes
@SimonSheehan why skipping W8? not worth it? (just curious)

@studiohack Might be good to just write it as "building for the first time"

@SimonSheehan true...

@studiohack I tried out the developer build and everything, been following their blog.. I'm just feeling like its headed in the wrong direction, and there are better alternatives

@SimonSheehan I see... whatever works for you :)

For college I'm going to be needing a Macbook most likely...most of the media courses recommend it. I'd like to dual boot that.

1:06 AM
I'm personally a strong MS guy, planning to get a WP7 around the end of the year or january
@SimonSheehan boot camp?

@studiohack Probably not.. It'll more likely be some sort of EFI thing.. Can't remember the name, but its what they use on Mac I hear, for dual booting Linux and OS X
@studiohack WP7 eh? I've heard on and off reviews of it... why did you choose it?

@SimonSheehan I see... I've heard some bloggers say the ultimate combination is a Windows OS on Mac hardware - personally, I find that hard to believe
@SimonSheehan because its Microsoft, I use Outlook and it seems to me that it would integrate with my Windows OS more tightly then anything else out there

@studiohack they do have REALLY good hardware now... It's not really Mac Stuff anymore, just the shell of it. It's all Intel and ATI stuff. They're working more with the vendors to get features months/years before others (like thunderbolt). They're putting more into the industry... So now Windows on a Mac is quite a good idea.
You get a quality product, up to date hardware, and the prices are much more reasonable now.
We just got brand new iMac's at school... for the price, we got a great product.
I picked them actually :P

wow cool! sounds fun :P
I still think you can do more with other OEMs, you can customize more...
I want to try out Nightly, but have a hulu episode open that I don't want to lose, so hanging in there :P

@studiohack Yes and no... I bought from Dell last, and was slightly annoyed. I mean, I absolutely love my laptop and desktop here... but quickly realized that there were a few issues behind it. Some things are locked down, I got hardware that was outdated next week.

1:13 AM
@SimonSheehan yeah... you have a point... as long as it runs powerfully enough, I'm okay

@studiohack Indeed... I'd just really like to upgrade the video card one day, but don't think I can... it ships with only a 300w PSU :/
@studiohack But you know, in the end - I get by fine :)
I do a lot of my work at school anyway so at home it's easier and less demanding

@SimonSheehan that's low. btw quick question, is a 600w PSU sufficient to run most basic PC builds, such as mine?
sorry, got interrupted...going to eat dinner now :P

@studiohack Enjoy! And 600w will easily be more than enough for you

1:43 AM
@studiohack: in my experience, yes. 350 is the minimum i'd tend to use, and most of my systems are on 450 or 500 watt PSUs
assuming its of course one discrete video card, motherboard, optical drive and up to two hard drives (which is my usual set up)

8 hours later…
10:10 AM
oh ffs
the dell wouldn't boot into win7 with the nividia video card. works well with the crappy intel integrated graphics tho

4 hours later…
2:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek Is the card dead?

its malfunctioning in a wierd way
only winxp boots

Weird.. I assume the drivers?

no, linux and win7 both fail, and combined with all the text mode wierdness...
(win7 freezes just before boot, linux apparently tries to go to failsafe drivers, and just sits there)

Ah, very weird :S
@JourneymanGeek What linux distro?

kubuntu

2:40 PM
Ah, that might be the issue - KDE requires a LOT

it booted before, with the same drivers

Perhaps you could try using Arch and then build it up to something that works.

I'll try a reinstall with the intel integrated card, and see if that works better
or just dump that crappy card, its been more trouble than its worth ;)

Haha.. sometimes integrated stuff just WORKS :P

it does aero, barely, and i doubt that system will ever be a gaming system ;)

2:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek Maybe just not use aero then? :P

nah, specs wise
its prolly the bare minimum for aero

But if you just dont use aero, might be a fast machine :P

naw, makes no difference performance wise
anything older wouldn't do it at all

3:35 PM
This question just kind of ..sucks superuser.com/questions/351876/…

@SimonSheehan Simon?

Hey everyone

@Mokubai Hello, do you use PayPal?

I've used it once or twice... not regularly though
@Boris_yo Why, you having problems?

@Mokubai Just want to know if it is possible to restore cancelled billing agreement.

3:50 PM
If they're anything like banks then the billing agreement has to be recreated completely rather than simply restored, but I don't use Paypal enough to know...

@Mokubai Thanks.

4:31 PM
Any chance we can reopen this - superuser.com/questions/351790/… not only because my answer is there, but, I think it is a really good topic. ... Seems to have a lot of page views as well.

4:44 PM
Works as a question for me, basically "I don't really get Virtualization, what's the big dealio?" a bit vague and not necessarily questionm with a firm answer, but it's less vague than some that stay open...

I said ages ago that the problem thing needs to be dropped from the FAQ - there are plenty of really good questions similar to this on Stack Overflow that are not problems, but, are left open as they are good topics

4:57 PM
indieroyale.com - now £2.15 - lowest it has been in a while - may want to buy if you haven't already! ... No time to play :( but, bought for later!

1 hour later…
6:06 PM
@WilliamHilsum now ~£1.90, think mine was ~£1.30 since I was in very early ;)

@DMA57361 Bah, I payed £2.14... Feel ripped off now! ... Well, I will hopefully get in on the next one early

@WilliamHilsum lol, well given the games are probably over £20 bought all separately it's hardly a rip off

@DMA57361 Can anyone really complain of a few pence these days... less than a cup of coffee and should last a lot longer as well! Just don't know when I will have the time to play :(

heh, just squeeze half an hour a day in or something

7:00 PM
Picked up Battlefield 3!
but PSN is extremely slow so I can't update to play online right now :/

2 hours later…
8:55 PM
Jets are cool...when you're team mates arent blowing them up
