12:56 AM
hello, I am looking for a lightweight variant of ubuntu, to run some packages which do not run on my platform; so essentially I will run that variant in a virtual machine; I am looking at Xubuntu and Lubuntu? which one should I choose?

sorry I wouldn't know
I don't use linux

Ivo: no problem :) , how do @people here ?

@VaibhavBajpai and arrow up = quick edit (see)

eh, there are badges for chats now :-D

yeah I got them naturally
and I finished the book!
the last part took me longer than necessary but still

@IvoFlipse yeah, me too :p

What does it take to earn the badges?

@IvoFlipse the project management ?

yeah
you need to get messages starred @BrianOjeda
what shall I read next @Sathya

3:22 AM
Thanks @IvoFlipse

@BrianOjeda
> Posted 10 messages, with 1 or more starred, in chat.
@IvoFlipse The one on UI ?

Today is my first day in chat. So trying to learn the system. Thanks @Sathya

@BrianOjeda You're welcome

I was just browsing Beginning Python visualization
seems very accessible and exactly in my kind of application

nice

3:26 AM
but it's more useful to look things up than to read completely
but it explains how to edit plots and arrays
using some of the math libraries

seems like just what you need

yeah, but it's probably not advanced enough
it's only useful to look up the things I don't know or didn't see in the documentation

but it has good examples, which helps

btw ^^ ingame pic from Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (2010)

3:29 AM
nice :)

yep :)

Python from Novice to Professional, that one seems more my level
it takes the effort to explain things with examples, without lecturing me (as in telling me more than I need to know right now)

@IvoFlipse perfect!

it is yeah

When did the new chat badges show up?

3:31 AM
just now
oh it even goes through GUI + databases
yeah I'm definitely going through this one :P
awesome: Screen scraping

:)
you sound like a kid in a candy store @IvoFlipse :P

I feel like one
> Test first, code later

I am currently reading PHP Object Oriented Solutions by David Powers

lol it even has unit tests

@IvoFlipse Neat. Should reappear on SE sites more often. Every time it's just as a new badge appears it seems.

3:34 AM
what was PHP good for again?
something with websites

takes a note to look at it.

were you gone then @Chealion ;-P

@IvoFlipse Ha! Just far too busy with work. I've neglected SE far too much lately.

it even has a chapter on extending python with C++ or Java

@IvoFlipse Distracting Rails developers who will whine and complain endlessly.

3:37 AM
well work is very important, but if your like me, you end up being here all day long...

.. and me too. With time to burn :\

yeah but you sleep mostly through my day :P

@IvoFlipse Development and video editing are time consuming activities.

if I could read every book in 3 days @Sathya, I'd spend the whole next month reading

@IvoFlipse well that works for books on Management and other such stuff, I guess

A: Is 8GB mini thumb drive sufficient for Ubuntu Desktop?

SathyaMy install of Ubuntu + codecs + KDE + unity + git + MonoDevelop + PyQT + ruby + rails takes about 4gigs, so you should be fine. Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 16G 4.0G 11G 28% /

Thought my Ubuntu install took 8G+, but amazingly it's half of that.

3:41 AM
yeah I guess so
but even if I only read those books, then I know where to find it again later :P

@IvoFlipse for books more on programming, I think it'll take longer to grasp and digest them

well luckily they duplicate themselves a lot
Practical Programming - An Introduction to Computer Science Using Python, v.2009-5-6 (2009)
I think I could finish that in 2 days
though I would almost skip half of it :P

@IvoFlipse the first half, I assume

hmmm Programming Python seems a bit out of my league (and I don't know if I want to use Tkinter)

3:58 AM
Why does SE chat say that I am logged out while SE itself says that I am logged in?

there are some quirks with the logging in that haven't been straightened out

I do have idea what my cause. I am in Afghanistan and the internet connection, or lack of, isn't the best.
But I normally don't have any issues with the sites just the chat.

well signing in has to do with cookies and html storing it, unless your using IE7

Nope. Using the best... Chrome
Chrome 8

@BrianOjeda perhaps raise this issue in meta.stackoverflow.com ?
:-D
This SSD drive SUCKS. Writing documentation still takes FOREVER.

4:00 AM
I was just about to ask where to post this type of issue. Thanks @Sathya

@BrianOjeda anytime!

the best is Chrome 10!
morning @Troggy

'ello @Troggy

Ivoooooo

it's a wonder, we're online together

4:01 AM
Chrome 9 @IvoFlipse

it's 5 frigging AM here :P
nope, nightly builds are at 10

@IvoFlipse the canary is 10 ? or 9 ?

canary != nightly

Chrome 10? Developer? Is it open to all?

4:03 AM
I thought he latest was 9 too.

I wouldn't bother, but heey it's there

@IvoFlipse nightly would mean chromium them ? or is it still chrome ?

chromium yes

@IvoFlipse ok.. I'm happy with my dev channel :P

4:05 AM
@IvoFlipse ah yes
the crashes
burned me too

I ended up reinstalling Chrome
since it sync everything, it wasn't really an issue
but as a geek, off course I had nearly every flag turned on AND lastpass
big no no apparently

@IvoFlipse pretty much like me :p

lol
Well, I am heading to the chow hall for breakfast. Ill be back on later.

off course the fact that you know what flags refer to, means we're all pretty geeky :P

@BrianOjeda laters!

4:08 AM
lol

we no longer have the "switch room" option ?
/

strange
I'm going to read Python Power - The comprehensive Guide first I think @Sathya

@IvoFlipse ok :-)

though darn it uses MySQL
why would I want that

@IvoFlipse I think at the end of this

4:13 AM
Perk? of Chromium; doesn't come with Flash installed in it.

you will write a perfect Python book :p
@Chealion perk of Chrome:
I know it's possible in other browsers

@Sathya Whoa. When did that get added?

lol who knows @Sathya ;)
a couple of weeks ago

@Chealion I'd assume the latest few revisions

@Sathya Serves me right - haven't been using Chromium the past couple weeks.

4:15 AM
@Chealion safari 5 ?

@Sathya It definitely wasn't in when 9 first showed up.
@Sathya Mix of browsers since I've been doing testing.

@Chealion ah I see

meeh, you know what I'll do first @Sathya
go to frigging bed

@IvoFlipse :p
good night/morning @IvoFlipse!
@Chealion it's under "DO NOT FLIP THE RED SWITCH" options
aka about:flags
with this
I say g'nite folks!

A: Which browser do you use?

Brian OjedaGoogle Chrome Official Site: http://www.google.com/chrome Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome

How can I make my own question a wiki one?

6:39 AM
@BrianOjeda You can hit the edit link on your question/answer and you will find a checkbox in the lower right hand corner to turn the post into a community wiki.
It looks like you figured it out and then deleted?
@BrianOjeda I did just close your question however. It is closed for similar reasons to this one: superuser.com/questions/658/…

@Troggy I saw that. After reviewing the other questions I agree that they made the correct choice. The other questions were closed or locked.

You are correct. Haha, and Diago deleted it 4 seconds before I clicked delete.
I don't think Super User needs an escort service.

Q: MSG command in windows 7

zebiam unable to send message to other computers which are connected through a TP link router. we acn share files bu can not send msg through msg commnad. it just shows msg to my laptop only. plz reply at zebj

This post needs to be edited.

10:08 AM
@BrianOjeda how's that?

What do you mean? Look at the grammar and spelling errors.

incidentally, if I type msg in to a command prompt I get a fairly standard "how to use this" output, so I don't think it's been removed on Win7.
@BrianOjeda what I mean, sorry, is that I've edited it and how is it now?

@DMA57361 Oh, sorry.
Let me finish editing my answer for that questions. @DMA57361
@DMA57361 Much better. People these days do not know how to write.
@DMA57361 Thank you.

no problem

hi!
I want to buy a wireless router, and after long research I've got two models
Apple Airport Extreme and Netgear WNDR3700
any suggestions?

Wil
12:40 PM
Anything other than Apple!

12:57 PM
jezus
I got a Google Apps domain
trialled the premier edition
thought I turned it off
turns out, I didn't now they expect me to start paying for it

uh oh :/

or was it 50$ a year? in that case it would be minor
but if not, I'm seriously pissed
I sent a customer report, so we'll see how it goes

1:28 PM
hi; i need some editor for windows with a list of open files ("tabs"/whatever) on the left side of the gui - any ideas, anyone?

you mean like a file explorer?
something like total commander?

text editor :)
normally using notepad++
but it has the list of open files on top

a text editor with a file list on the side... why not simply put explorer open next to it :P

i need it on the left
i need to be able to quickly switch between the files contents

Q: can Notepad++ open up a file and folder browse panel?

動靜能量i like Notepad++ because it is quick to start up, can support many languages, and it can even match a <div> with the </div> so that you can check when a <div> is matching the correct closing </div>... but it seems like it is missing the feature of having a left side panel of folder a...

yes your welcome ;)

1:33 PM
hmm; maybe... will be a bit harder to use than what i'd like, but if i can't find what i want...
my "top-level" need is to get around some code written by other people, and there's a bunch of interoperating functions there, and I'd like to be able to easily switch between their bodies
k, thankies for the idea, but please write if some more alternatives struck you :)

will do :)

1:51 PM
@IvoFlipse: You're probably not up for SC II now?
Did you win the last match yesterday?

Wil
2:21 PM
@TomWij - Install Spring RTS!!!
I am trying to get in to podcasts a bit - I want to listen to the Stack Overflow one - is there anyway to download them all easily? I looked on Itunes but it only shows the last 10 (I am guessing RSS limit or something)

2:45 PM
@IvoFlipse you around?

@IvoFlipse why premier ? The free edition's there.
@Troggy questions can be made wiki only by mods now @BrianOjeda

I lost @TomWij
I'm playing 2v2 with some random guy
I got to trial it for free @Sathya

@IvoFlipse the trial doesn't offer anything over the free edition
except for space & SLA

I just thought I'd try it out
so now I mailed support with a complaint to cancel it
it's still the expiry date

3:00 PM
@IvoFlipse ok

It was from nov 3rd till dec 3rd
and I just want it cancelled

I thought I did
it said something like: do not automatically refresh blabla (something like that)

@IvoFlipse auto renew I guess

yeah
I thought it was that
as I didn't want to trial to be renewed into a full account
and the date seemed right
yeah 2011... I guess :(

Wil
3:12 PM
@Sathya I have to manually download all of them :(

@Wil hang on
sigh
the file names are timestamped
http://itc.conversationsnetwork.org/audio/download/ITC.SO-Episode84-2010.02.16.mp3
else could've put a script to auto download

Wil
lol
no problem, il get round to doing it eventually

wonder if you can put a wildcard query
and download the files

Wil
I like podcasts now, but I want to listen to many from the start (I know it will take me ages to catch up!) but it just seems annoying that many don't allow older than the RSS feed

@Wil count me in that list :p

Wil
3:35 PM
Even if I did manually download them (Which apart from wasting a bit of time, I am fine with), is there any way to actually import them to a podcast list.. at the moment, I think I am going to have to do as MP3 and just as a song... seems annoying :(

@Wil create a playlist ?

Wil
not as good as actually having it in the original, but good idea... didn't think of that!

@Sathya Watching
... If you want a video more about England and Christmas...

@Wil watching this now
LOL

Wil
Do you have chavs in America!? Has that saying reached there?

@Wil not as far as I know
you'll have to ask the other folks :-)

Wil
lol

Too many bookmarklets!

7:51 PM
@digitxp I thought I had none till I saw that all bookmarks on my chrome bookmarks toolbar are actually bookmarklets o_0

@Sathya How do you organize them?

@digitxp Haven't organized them really.. my brain is now trained to the location of them. Plus since chrome is synced, they appear the same everywhere

Mine seem to duplicate themselves like viruses...

8:06 PM
@digitxp which ones you use frequently ?

8:26 PM
@IvoFlipse: I'm back! xD

so am I
just totally owned a Zerg player 1v1
but I first have to wake up my GF
brb
so where's @TomWij now?

8:41 PM
@ivoFlipse here!

I was just about to jump into Nexus wars
but I dropped out again
let's do some games of death and destruction

okay, coming
