@badp is this your question? reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/2343ud/…

8:40 AM
Because the GPU seems rather overkill to me
unless you have a 1080p+ screen
Also overclocking seems overrated to me
and a SSD is much better value for performance
Even if you only get a 128 Gb drive for the OS and the games you play at the moment

1 hour later…
10:04 AM
@ivo yes
See the tl:dr for how I got there

I'd definitely consider a cheaper GPU

I also was planning an SSD

I hadn't seen the TLDR yet
popping in RAM really isn't that hard, but I think its better to have all the same type, so you might as well get it now
though it does double its cost
You have 300+ games, but you don't play them all at the same time
Hopefully your internet is fast enough to download them when you anticipate wanting to play them

Swapping is the performance killer of my current computer hence my possible overcompensation

I have 32 Gb, I know your feeling :P
I don't think I even get close to using 10

10:08 AM
I have local backups for the largest ones on an external computer

but I'm at 7.7 while doing mostly nothing
You don't need an extra cooler I think
especially not at that price
the stock one is designed to have the CPU run at its advertised speeds until the end of its days
if you only buy one 1x8gb of ram, you could pop in more once you have the extra cash
an SSD would be much more worth it I reckon
though simply dropping the GPU down a notch and getting a SSD would already be a nice choice
I have a GTX 640 and can comfortably play on my Korean 27" monitor
I also have an AMD 7950 but I should really sell that one :P

Yeah I was thinking getting an SSD would be the simplest upgrade for later but to take advantage of it I would need to reinstall all the things

No no, its the best upgrade you can have right now :P
Everything feels faster with a SSD
you could start with a 128Gb one

I know :(

The Samsung ones go for about ~100 euro

10:14 AM
I don't know if 128 is enough that's all
I would need to get out a spanner

Windows is about 30Gb so you're left with plenty

I hear Tiranfall alone is 50

Then finish it and delete it :P

I don't have it but...

You might also be able to get a cheaper motherboard
you most likely don't need a lot of the fancy features
they sound cool, but they're pretty useless
so drop the cooler, get a 100 euro motherboard, buy a 200 euro GPU and perhaps even a cheaper case if you can find it
then you should have enough slack for a SSD

10:18 AM
I honestly don't even know what the fancy features are. I just picked everything at the same level of Logical Increments
I was hoping the features would be future proofing like USB 3 or "is compatible with everything else"

I think the biggest difference will be PCI-e slots and stuff like that
personally, buying a new GPU after 2-3 years is better than buying a more expensive motherboard so you can another GPU for SLI for example
Moore's Law makes GPU's so much better that after 3 years, you don't need your old GPU
its not worth the power (which means a bigger PSU too!)
but the GTX 760 will suffice, still saves you about 60 euro's

My "old GPU" is a GeForce 9200M
yeah I'm afraid I'm overcompensating on all of the parts that are a problem now and ignoring all of the parts that would be a problem then
@IvoFlipse do you know how well or poorly does SLI work on Linux?
I've heard horror stories from people trying to support systems switching between, say, an Intel 3000 HD and a proper GPU
although that's not SLI proper
the nVidia drivers claim support for it but the nVidia drivers aren't great.

10:44 AM
I wouldnt rely on it
Just buy a new GPU in 3 years if you need it by then
Worry fort later
And indeed you're over compensating
