Q: Why did Emporer Constantine believe he was a instrument of God?

turinsbaneI recently watched a lecture by a professor at Yale who mentioned Constantine's belief that he was a instrument of God, but doesn't really explain why. My question is did this stem from his predecessor's pagan beliefs, like Julius Caesar who was worshiped as a God after he died?

@Nathaniel - I remember being confused about "sexual immortality" when I was younger. Of course, that was before I figured out it was "immorality" and not "immortality". :P
