8:00 PM
Aaah.. 7 months.

@Richard yeah, a number of other ones have survived in beta for over a year Role-playing Games for one...

@ElendiaStarman That's a pretty good indication that they felt it was a matter of updating the vocabulary to not conflict with modern usage, but generally left the same general flow of the translation.

@Caleb And that's consistent with the rest of the passage being the same as the original...

Q: Why did the KJV translate Jeremiah 29:11 the way it did?

El'endia StarmanI ran across the KJV translation of Jeremiah 29:11 on Facebook today and was struck by a seeming contradiction in the way the last part was translated. Here is the verse alongside other modern translations for comparison: Jeremiah 29:11 KJV: For I know the thoughts that I think toward ...

@ElendiaStarman King James English has a number (at least a couple dozen that I've seen) words that have completely changed meanings since they were put in ... and we're not talking about shifting scope or alternate usages, we are talking about 100% reversals where the word today would mean the opposite thing as it did when it was written.

@Caleb Huh...interesting. And yet some people still believe it's THE translation? :P

8:07 PM
@ElendiaStarman Those things don't mean it was a bad translation, for its' time it was actually fantastic. If you speak KJE and know how to read it it's not bad, but it's not what you would hand to a new believer and expect them to understand based on their knowledge of English.
And the whole inspired-translation-more-authoritative-than-any-language thing is just off base to begin with.

@Caleb Yeah, I read somewhere on this site that the KJV was actually a thought-for-thought translation for the time although it's now more of a word-for-word translation.
Here we go:
6
A: What process was used to translate the KJV?

RichardThe King James Version or Authorized Version as it was originally known, was translated by a group of 47 scholars. It was actually a thought-for-thought translation, rather than word-for-word translation. The idea is that they tried to take the original meaning of the text (not just the indivi...

@ElendiaStarman The lines between those definitions have shifted and yes, it now falls in a different box.
Although word-for-word is pretty much a misnomer if you ask me. Language just doesn't work that way.

@Caleb True, true.

All of this has made me think of this question

Q: What is the meaning of 1 Thessalonians 5:22?

FlimzyInspired by an answer to one of my other questions, what is the proper meaning of 1 Thessalonians 5:22? KJV Abstain from all appearance of evil. NIV: reject every kind of evil. NKJV Abstain from every form of evil. I am most familiar with the first translation, as was the poste...

A: Are we voting enough?

Grace NoteYou're correct in that it is an indicator for your health as a Beta site, as the voting level tends to affect how many users you get at varying reputation levels. Without high reputation users, you do not have people who can police the community properly when you graduate. The best way to get a ...

8:13 PM
@ElendiaStarman Yes. The badge is a onetime thing but he's hit the rep-cap e.v.e.r.y. day.

Well, with 93 answers, it's no wonder.

@Richard lol and 0 questions

@waxeagle Yeah, I noticed that early in the private beta... :P

Wouldn't this be a question for Google moreso than SE?

Q: What is the criteria to be named a Saint?

DTestHow is someone deemed a Saint? At first I was thinking the requirement was to martyred for your faith. Is this accurate? Note, I'm talking officially title 'Saint' and not referring to a good man's character.

@Richard It may fail the "too simple" test. the first 5 google results seem fast and comprehensive, although teh first one is sketch

8:42 PM
Lol @Richard...answered and then closed the question? :P

if your gonna vtc don't validate with an answer :P

:) Like that? I kind of felt bad, but...

Hola boys

A: What are the "giants" mentioned in the bible?

Jonathon ByrdThe sons of God are Angels The Hebrew words used here are Ben 'elohiym. Ben Literally means a 'decedent of'. So sons, grandsons, translated to son. 'elohiym can be translated into a few different words. rulers, judges, divine ones, angels, gods. You can see that the scholars behind the NKJV h...

I updated my answer pretty significantly
been researching these nephilim for the last hour or two
let me know your thoughts

@Jonathon: "N@phiyl"...meant to put the @ symbol in there?

@ElendiaStarman that's how it's shown in the Hebrew lexicon

8:46 PM
@JonathonByrd Huh, interesting. Okay.
@Jonathon: It's a good answer. I'd +1 if I could.

@ElendiaStarman haha, are you out of votes again?

I'm practically always out of votes! :P

But yes, I've been out of votes the past few hours.
I tend to use about half before I go to sleep and the other half in the first significant break after waking up.

somebody just downvoted it..
wtf
@ahardin you downvoted me didnt you hardin? lol

@waxeagle I agree (about vtc + answering)... That's what I get for asking something that occurs to me while working. SE is starting to be my default place to ask

@JonathonByrd Gah, why do I always get blamed for kicking people out?

8:49 PM
@DTest :)

@Caleb cuz you're the most active person here.

@JonathonByrd nope, just upvoted :)

@a_hardin lol, why thank you.

@JonathonByrd Not me, I haven't had votes since BEFORE breakfast today. (and they are in the same time zone for me not split over two days like @ElendiaStarman

@JonathonByrd I've been out for hours, and I always comment (unless someone else has already commented and I feel the need to join the party)

8:51 PM
@Caleb Haha, yeah. The rollover happens at 8:00 pm for me, so...

@ElendiaStarman im in the same tz...

@JonathonByrd I'm pretty sure that's what I would have written if I had the time to pull the scripture together.
really need to make a generator for myself

@ElendiaStarman 3 am here. Just late enough it pretty much always breaks over my real day breaks.

@a_hardin I spent a few hours on it the other day too, but he just posted 100 rep for the answer. so I revised with a few more hours of study :)
I hate the questions that take forever to answer... the roi sucks lol

@Caleb Dang...that's like the perfect time for the rollover. :P

8:54 PM
@JonathonByrd I don't think I agree with you on that post ... although it's more promising than the first version :) Your reasoning follows a pretty typical line for them being angles (which I don't hold to but that's not what I'm objecting to here) but the last bit about the connection to the holy spirit seems tenuous. Doesn't that phrase have other users for when God is clearly dealing with humans?

Q: Do Catholics refer to all martyrs as Saints?

DTestHow is someone deemed a Saint as opposed to a martyr in Catholicism? At first I was thinking the only requirement was to killed for your faith. Is this accurate?

looks like @peterturner is trying to revitalize it!

That's why I clarified the premise in Luke 20:36
@Caleb which states that we will be equal with the angels and called sons of god

@DTest I noticed that too. However, I still think that Wikipedia answers that...

@JonathonByrd actually, after re-reading, it looks like you answer the question about who the sons of God are, but you don't mention the giants they are asking about in the original question

@a_hardin Actually, he DOES reference the verse(s) that mention them. @Jonathon just doesn't make them stand out.

8:57 PM
I clarify the premise of what sons of God means, then I specifically associate that with the nephilim in the last part of the answer

@ElendiaStarman I'd agree, i was actually going to rephrase it to be something along the lines of 'Is the term Saint specific to catholicism', but there were a bunch of answers before I could do that.
and ironically Bork's answer would be right on target for that

It's a a tough question to answer because it requires clarification on a lot of the assumed parts of the answer.
to just come out and say that they are fallen angels doesn't seem to have a lot of evidence behind it.

@JonathonByrd As I pointed out on a question here on that issue however, being equal with angles is not at all the same as BEING angels.

@Jonathon: A suggestion: Add another header that points out the connection between the "giants" that the OP is asking about and them being the offspring of the "sons of God".

@ElendiaStarman Or reduce the other headers a little so the in between stuff doesn't get skipped!

9:01 PM
@ElendiaStarman Yeah, I think there needs to be something that what was translated "giants" in the OP's translation is Nephilim

@ElendiaStarman i adjusted
@a_hardin Well, that's the interesting thing, because the word Nephilim comes from the word N@phiyl, which means "giant, the Nephilim"

@JonathonByrd Yeah, I think translating that as "giants" really loses a lot of meaning
Kind of like translating "Earth" as "ball"
"After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the ball"

@a_hardin That would not be a fun language to learn.

For the "biblical exegesis for programmers" blog series:

Anybody heard of the term "premortal sin"? (ref)

@caleb nice

9:09 PM
@Caleb That one was new to me as well.

@Caleb I haven't heard of it, but I assume its "pre-conception" sin?
sin in a "former life"

Or perhaps the Sin we inherit through Adam?

That's what I'm trying to figure out. Usage on the interwebs seems to be mixed between previous-life and just some eternal pre-body state.

@ElendiaStarman not in this context

@Caleb Well, in either case, it's clearly before birth.
Mmmpgh...I've been at 995 rep for almost an hour... :P

9:14 PM
@ElendiaStarman I'd give you a vote if I could...

@ElendiaStarman Ya I got that from the lingo ... I'm trying to figure out how it fits into LDS beliefs. They believe in all mater being eternal and also I think in human spirits being eternal but it's not clear how that affects the issue in the question.
@KronoS you around?

@JonathonByrd if you edit your nephilim answer again correct "decedents" to "descendants". re: Ben Literally means a 'decedent of'. So sons, grandsons, translated to son.

@waxeagle LOL...
@Caleb Gotcha.

talk to you later guys

Seeya @waxeagle!

9:43 PM
I gave up on waiting for another upvote and so just made three edits. Now I have 1,001 rep! :P :D

Congrats! :)

Thanks! :)
And now I won't get rep for editing... :P

10:05 PM
@Caleb kinda :P what's up?

@KronoS I had a question about LDS theology that's sort of a continuation of our chat the other day but I'm actually going to have to jet in a couple minutes myself so maybe I'll ping you another day.

@Caleb: Fantastic answer; would upvote.
...
fa; wu? :P

@caleb, is that the 3-4 generations stuff. There's something in Catholicism, at least I think it is unique to Catholicism, called inter-generational healing. I think it's more like counselling for families with deeply ingrained issues than it is atonement for their sins. (talking about pre-whatever sin)

@PeterTurner No, this was something else. Came up in one of Mason's answers, but has to do with what @KronoS was telling me the other day about how they see creations and matter and eternity and stuff a differently.
@PeterTurner There are some interesting generational issues in Scripture for sure, this was about individuals tho.
More when I'm not about to run off!
I just had to finish that answer for @ElendiaStarman :) Now for dishes and bed.

i wonder if "end" has eschatalogical meaning
the ultimate end of new heaven and earth

10:22 PM
@djeikyb I wondered about that. This would be a great question for Hermaneutics when it comes along. I don't know Hebrew, I was just giving an explanation for why that didn't have to be a wrong translation in English. There could actually be a lot more meaning buried in there.

might be worth a cross post on judaism.se
interesting question, @ElendiaStarman

@djeikyb Thanks! :)
@djeikyb You can do that if you want. :P

@Caleb that might be good... as I'm in and out with class right now

@dancek wow...[shakes head]
Well, gotta head out for now. Seeya guys later! :)

10:45 PM
I've been here a week and not managed to be suspended, this is because I don't ask dumb questions.
"Which Christian denominations are false?" Is a complete troll question. Perhaps he envisioned asking it and watching the Christians argue among themselves whilst he chortled at the replies? :P

@CiscoIPPhone yeah, it's quite obvious he didn't really get how SE works
This site should definitely not require belief to use.

11:00 PM
That whole thread is sadly hilarious. I find his post somewhat deceptive however. Just a week before he announced on the same forum that he was coming over to troll us, then he writes a letter about how good intentioned he was? I'm not buying it. I'm glad somebody called him out on that in comments, but it seems to have gone un-noticed. It doesn't look like the majority of folks there care.
@CiscoIPPhone Of course you haven't, because you have been mis-behaving. This has nothing to do with him being an Atheist. It has to do with not following community guidelines which would actually go for any SE site.
There are actually 3 or 4 very well behaved atheists around here who's challenges and questions I think have been good for us in the long run.
I for one have zero problem with being challenged on logic or premises or historical or scientific issues, but people who troll answers to every question stating we've got it all wrong (in "aggressive" terms no less :) just don't add anything to the community.

11:23 PM
Funny how he didn't mention the multiple illegit accounts he created

@Flimzy Actually he did in comments, but with a different spin of course.
It looks like this needs to be credited to rpeg as well.

11:55 PM
@CiscoIPPhone: it looks like I typoed have when I meant have not above. I hope you caught my drift, and sorry about that.
