It's why we're not flooded with spam and low-quality content in the first place
The system is designed to keep the need for manual intervention to a minimum
Our mods are already very busy, and we can't afford to give them more work
A reminder to every website administrator who maintains some sort of community: Remember to design your sites from the start to protect against potential abuse. You'll save yourself and your community from lots of headaches.
Don't leave any holes for vandals and spammers to exploit!
Had it not been for these stringent protection measures, we'd need far more moderators than we have qualified people
...and there would be no way Stack Exchange could be so successful at this scale

@DragonLord: Not sure if I can reveal the details, but the anti-spam system is pretty impressive
And having an anti-spam system is unfortunately necessary, even in blogs. I shovel out something like 200-300 spam posts a week akmiset catches from my blog.

@JourneymanGeek I don't allow automated submission of comments at all—the blog software is set up to reject comments submitted through the API
The only allowed comments are through the form, and even that must go through a reCAPTCHA and manual moderation before they even appear on the blog

oh, I do akmiset + manual approval
akmiset dumps spam in its own queue
