5:12 AM
It's time to play The Feud!

@Mazura o.o what's happening?

Other than an attic, name a room of a house that would not require either a GFCI or an AFCI convenience outlet.
I can't decide if I should actually ask that. Here. Or should it be on Puzzling or ELU? ;p

I think that as of 2014, there's nowhere in a dwelling unit that isn't covered by GFCI, AFCI, or both

Here, it'd be POB because of "and all similar rooms and areas" and also, IANAL.

POB?

5:21 AM
Isn't there still some exceptions for dedicated outlets though... but I did say convenience ...

for GFCI, yes

@Shalvenay primarily opinion biased

@Mazura ah
AFCI is still required on dedicated receptacles though

I see. Well there goes that.

(p.s. I hope nobody on this planet makes a gadget that ground-fault-trips an AFCI due to leakage alone)
heck, we've had GFCIs for how long, and there are still apparently appliances out there that nuisance trip them?

5:24 AM
Yeah.. like table saws ;)

that's actually rather curious
you'd think that making a table saw that doesn't nuisance trip GFCIs would be like...not hard :P

because back EMF on motors I think. Can't really avoid it... cheaply.

...maybe? is it only a problem for el-cheapo-special GFCI receptacles, or are GFCI breakers just as prone to back-EMF false tripping on sizeable motor loads?

Some of both.
They're much better these days though.
Today I had one trip. The plug was in a puddle.

I do know of one not-so-mundane piece of gear that will never be compatible with Class A GFCIs though...the Line Impedance Stabilization Network that's used when you want to measure how much RF hash some piece of kit spews out its power cord
Those things leak oh, 10-15mA to ground. By design and regulatory mandate.

5:27 AM
I'm not even sure what those are. You an EE?

almost but not quite xD
the LISN is used to present a stable RF impedance to whatever you're measuring the RF hash with
as who the @($*)@!$ knows what the impedance of the mains to say a CB radio signal is!
(or your favorite AM station, for that matter)

I'm following in my father's foot steps as a jack of all trades. Whatever you're talking about is above my pay grade ;)
You do commercial?
My uncle worked for ComEd as an EE.

@Mazura my day job's as a software developer -- my EE-side stuff's actually more Computer than power Electrical
so I'm basically an almost-an-EE who knows enough code to pretend to be an electrician (it's my Plan B in case Skynet rises and has to be terminated -- I don't think I'd have any trouble apprenticing as an electrician, if all else fails)
but yeah, the wall socket looks different if you're an RF signal headed that way, depending on where you are more or less

Neither of those are skill sets to be in large supply anytime soon AFAIK.

suffice it to say that power lines make wonderful antennae

5:36 AM
How many times has the FCC knocked on you door? ;p

but yeah. a standard issue AC Line Impedance Stabilization Network has 1uF of capacitance from each of line and neutral to ground. most UL/IEC specs don't allow Class Y caps to be nearly that big.
@Mazura 0.

Heh. ok here's one. What can I do about when my furnace kicks off, my router gets reset?

@Mazura gas, oil, or electric furnace?

One of those battery back ups? ... Gas.
forced air

even a good surge suppressor should help the router's cause
fan motor back-EMF is what I'd suspect as the culprit here
kind of like the tablesaw giving the GFCI the ol' back-EMF kick in the pants

5:39 AM
Oh, it gets an momentary over voltage?

yeah, any inductive load will do that as revenge for turning it off all of a sudden ;)

It is just plugged into a plain old power strip... TX, I'll look into getting a real SP
Which has what in it? Capacitors... resistors?
What am I looking at for a good one? A voltage range?
I'll read up on it. Bedtime.
