12:03 AM
that it is!

It's a lot more educational than it has any right to be.

It is!
They were very true to their source material and knew their stuff and shared it freely
And things were presented... um... reasonably accurately even if they took liberties with doing so.
(the things that were presented, that is)

@Ceribia Hi!

12:19 AM
Yeah, basically my point is that they did skip things, and they did take liberties. However, they presented some reasonable explanations for certain characters' actions and even explained to a certain extend what some of his plays meant rather than fully acting those plays out
It is very well done all in all

12:43 AM
Well normally I would be gone now, but the Abomination Van won't start
so I guess I am stuck home for most of the day XD

1:00 AM
hooray!
home!
unless a BESW visit was planned in which case oh nooooo

@doppelgreener I have seen this show. It is pretty great.
It was a long time ago, though. I don't remember a lot of specifics besides the Titus Andronicus cooking show and Ophelia's biological clock. :P

@doppelgreener if he is having any visitors today I don't think it is until 2, and I might actually have transportation by then
maybe not though, who knows

@Pixie good time to refresh yourself? :D
but yeah the thing they did with Ophelia was pretty great

1:21 AM
Morning folks :)

o/ @Nyoze

Morning!

how're things going?

Eh, toothache is driving me crazy, but good asides from that.
How about you guys?

alright over here. when would be a good time for us to wrap up our one-on-one?

1:30 AM
Ready whenever you are, over in the backroom.
/phew. I just found out I actually hit target for June. Was touch and go for a while there =\

2 hours later…
3:29 AM
@Nyoze Hooray \o/

3:43 AM
I hate sales, but... Job's a job, right? :(

yes
sort of
as many would say, your job should be something you also enjoy doing

Tbh I think that's one of the worst lies they tell children in school.

Haha.
@doppelgreener At least I managed to make part of my job something I enjoy doing. I just need to convince them that they need the other things I do full time, not just a few days a month...

Well, if you're lucky, you might end up doing something you enjoy, but the expectation people have that work is enjoyable leads to all kinds of problems.

@Miniman Do you enjoy your work?

3:58 AM
@Miniman It is a factor of luck and of deliberately choosing where you work rather than letting crap places choose you.
Or creating work for yourself.

@doppelgreener +1 for letting crap places choose you. Too many people I've known have just gone for whenever they can find work and ended up hating it, rather then finding somewhere they actually enjoy, or has room to move to somewhere they enjoy.

Apropos of nothing, "Explosive Omnipresence" would be a good name for a band.

@Nyoze Sometimes, other times not. But I know a lot of people who have failed to maintain a steady state of being employed because they had faith in the idea that work should be enjoyable.

it's a tradeoff -- are you looking for the first place you can, or a proper fit?

@Miniman I would suggest that their idea that one's job should be enjoyable was not the sole cause of that. They probably also took actions to disrupt their employment, wise or unwise.

4:05 AM
@doppelgreener you a word there

@Shalvenay thank

@Miniman In that case, I think it's possible an issue of finding ways to enjoy the work they are doing, or taking the time to find a place of employment where they will fit in before disrupting their current job.

@doppelgreener It's more often that they don't get any jobs because they're looking for some dream that well-meaning teachers have told them is out there.

@Miniman Then they are channeling their philosophy into foolish action. Their action is what's producing results, and the action is at fault.

@doppelgreener I agree that it's foolish, but my original point was that it's not their personal philosophy. It's a philosophy that our society wrongly instills in people.

4:08 AM
Many successful individuals recite the same philosophy, and are enacting that philosophy successfully. (And obtained their success while enacting that philosophy, not after.)

@doppelgreener Hey, I'm not denying that it can work, or that it works for some people. Just that it doesn't work for everyone, and it's wrong to tell everyone that it will work for them.

@Miniman I don't think it's as much as "You will find a job that you will enjoy", but more of a way of saying "You can find a way to enjoy your work?". I definitely don't enjoy Sales as a job, but I've taken my love of computing and problem solving, and carved a niche out that at least 2 days a week, I am doing something I enjoy.

It is both. It is also a matter of a poor interpretation of enjoyment.

@Nyoze Hmmm. I'll have to think about that.
@doppelgreener Not at all sure what you're getting at there...

Conclusion: It's probably not possible to distill the lifelong experience of balancing the duties and desires for gainful employment, self-betterment, and contentment, into a single pithy phrase.

4:17 AM
To enjoy one's work is to experience satisfaction and gratification from it. There's various pools of thought about how to obtain that - one is that you must feel you are doing meaningful work, you are able to work toward mastery of it, and you are able to self-actualize through your work. (And, I think, another I forgot.) That's related to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
Some construe "enjoy my work" as meaning "oh, enjoyment, like when I'm watching a funny movie! I should be having a blast! And, I should quit when I'm not!"
and other unhelpful interpretations
There is also a difference between "have work you enjoy" and "chase your dream most enjoyable most fantastic idealistic job". You can have work you enjoy that isn't your ideal choice of work. I worked in a warehouse for a year moving boxes and shipping heavy equipment; that also became satisfying after a while. (I just didn't want to stay there, and I was not as effective as others who worked there.)

Personally, I've recently started trying to better understand what my faith means by contentment. It seems to be a more active thing than my contemporary society uses the word for.
I think it's something to do with being okay with having the challenges you face, without giving up on facing them.

That seems like an important part of it.

And this conversation also made me think of this:
> The happiness and greatness, the rank and station, the pleasure and peace, of an individual have never consisted in his personal wealth, but rather in his excellent character, his high resolve, the breadth of his learning and his ability to solve difficult problems.

4:33 AM
there is a piece of thick paper I have in my wallet
I gave a couple of dollars once to a man who was posing as a statue, and he bent toward me and handed me this piece of paper. It's tiny, and I've kept it in my wallet ever since.
2
It says:
> Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it. -- Buddha

4:47 AM
@doppelgreener That sounds a lot like the ideas in The Seven Valleys.

5:06 AM
@BESW did Baha'i draw from Buddhism as well?
(If not I'm not surprised if the very same thoughts emerged elsewhere)

@doppelgreener Yes, we believe Buddha was also a Manifestation of God, and His Revelation is a part of the same eternal, progressively revealed, Faith of God.
Although, I gotta say, I'm pretty sure your quote--while I agree with it--isn't actually from Buddha.
It's most likely a paraphrase of a paraphrase of a weird translation of the Dhammapada.
Doesn't make it any less useful to you, naturally.

@BESW half the things people attribute to Buddha weren't said by him, and when we're talking about passing around little quotes and bits of wisdom it becomes virtually all of them, so sure, it probably isn't, but that's what the piece of paper says

Indeed.
It's got more Buddhist pedigree than most quotes attributed to Him, though!

and then on the other hand, while we can find alternate places it's repeated in other sources, it might well be a statement buddha made.
@BESW Yep

1 hour later…
6:30 AM

@BESW Space is so pretty.

That blue light is Zeta Ophiuchi. It's a star. It used to have a partner star, but that one exploded. It exploded so hard, Ophiuchi is now hurtling through space at 24 km/second. That's so fast Ophiuchi's solar wind catches up the stuff it goes past, squeezing and heating it up to make a giant curved shockwave of spacestuff in front of the hurtling star.
5

@BESW Awesome.

If Ophiuchi didn't have its own personal space tsunami, it'd be one of the brightest stars in our sky.

That is truly awesome.
i am instilled with awe.

6:36 AM
That's amazing....

And terrifying.

I also see Riki:
@Nyoze that is awe you feel :D

Riki?

It most definitely is.

6:38 AM
as in Riki from Dota?

@trogdor yes

ah ok

as in Riki as in DotA 2 because that star is his permanent invisibility icon as well

looked sorta like it

Rikimaru got a makeover (and a rename to Riki) in DotA 2

6:45 AM
Space Tsunami needs to be a set for Riki. (It's also not a bad idea for a band name.)

It also sounds like an attack form in... any number of combat games/series.
> Ophiuchi uses Space Tsunami!

It sounds like a killer RPG setting, if you ask me.

This explains a lot about the Silver Surfer.

but why is Galactus just a really huge man

Because in the Marvelverse humanoid form is default for mortals and immortals alike, and Galactus is both.
(The alternate explanation is that --similar to Vorlons-- Conceptual entities in the Marvelverse are seen by lesser beings in a form determined by the unconscious mind of the beholder.)

7:00 AM
@doppelgreener He's the sole survivor of the previous universe, where there were humanoids, too.

So. On a side note. I got my Dex/Int Magus/Alchemist 28 AC after buffs...
With no armor, so that's all Touch AC.

@Magician oh i see
@BESW both of these are semi-satisfying

@doppelgreener By way of merging with the Sentience of the Universe and becoming a force of nature.

@Nyoze That's an impressive TAC, but I feel I must quote some wise words:

But the Sentience of the Universe was also roughly humanoid:

7:03 AM
> If you have less than AC 30, you are going to die. Often.

@Miniman Pff. At level 5, I think that's impressive. Give me a few more levels, I only need to upgrade my Belt and Headband 1 level each, or even just swap out Spark Shield for Shield, and I'm at 30.
Wait, Spark Shield doesn't affect TAC, so it's 28AC, 26TAC :(

Ok, I forgot you're at level 5. That's pretty sweet.

And I got myself a wand of Shocking Grasp, so that's 1d4+7, 1d4+7, 4d6 every time I get a full attack.
I think this character isn't going to have the pure damage output that a fighter or mage could have, but who's going to have a chance to hit me!
Wait, I can bump that even higher. Takes like, 4 rounds of prep, but =\
23 TAC base + 2 from Alc Mutagen + 2 from Cat's Grace + 2 from Reduce Person for 29TAC, then +1 AC from reduce person is 30AC.
Reach of 0ft without long arm, so I have to actually be up in their face, but isn't that the best way to melee?

7:24 AM
Lemon juice, cranberry juice, Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger tea, club soda, brown sugar, powdered ginger. Mix to taste, serve with ice in tall glasses.

sounds pretty good

@trogdor Sans club soda it's the second pitcher we were drinking Saturday.

ah

I know you didn't get much of it.

why add the club soda?

7:25 AM
Because fizzy.

true
I did like it, and I had some of it
so it's all good

Morning. I recon I was pretty stupid last week....
sorry for everyone who actually went to the other room only to find it in gallery mode.
wasn't intentional.

Chat rooms can be confuzzling.

@doppelgreener Late reply:

@SPArchaeologist hahaha, yes.
also did you know you can link XKCD comics directly here?
and the comic itself will display

7:31 AM
(Momentarily undermined, but yeah, like that)
We even get alt text!

actually, yes I know. But it is Monday, and I am still pancake.

that sounds like a pretty harsh condition

7:45 AM
Most rpg and games would probably just reuse the status effect "sleep"

Pancake sounds better, and is far more descriptive, and slightly less debilitating then sleep
Is there a suitable format for a question regarding - This is my build -X - What can I do to improve it for a specific task (E.G. PVP)?

8:03 AM
@SPArchaeologist Incidentally, the real headcannon:

I was about to say... :P

Yeah, I don't bother putting names on pics. Gets very confusing if the previews don't load.

A: Are character optimization questions on topic?

wax eagleA good charop question is either very specific or very general. If you fall in between you've entered the no mans land of gimmie the codez. There are 3 types of char-op questions that fall into the "good" category in my mind: I'm 90% complete and I need help making the final selection or two. ...

@BESW Um...apropos of?

@Miniman that one is cola powered and you may get in trouble if you have no cola left. I prefer a more reliable one.

8:10 AM
@Miniman The question about build questions.

@BESW Oh, I missed that one, sorry.

I'll stop asking build questions one day.

Or you could just do like I used to when I played UO... forget about the results and just go for pure roleplay approach.
That also means you get a whole load of pain when you actually attempt fighting, but this is another story.

8:28 AM
Pony gifs are a specific variant of NSFW.

New Sincerity Fandom Win?

Can't compute. Twilight Sparkle == 42 == The answer to life, the universe and everything.
(wait... I am a dev after all, let me correct that - done)

2 hours later…
10:26 AM
(Interestingly, I think that's the first witch doctor spam I've seen that's probably written from a male perspective.)

that one was just reported in the Tavern. I was going to point that out, but it seem you already saw that

There's another one above it, too.

11:07 AM
seem both are gone now.

1 hour later…
12:07 PM
gone when I got here, but I detroyed the user to be sure

12:19 PM
Morning

morning

morninG

Oh, my, so many mornings.

good night XD

@BESW so many mornings wonders.
@trogdor very appropriate considering the dream campaign you where planning.

12:35 PM
@SPArchaeologist It actually is also night here too

you just remembered me something.

Endless wonders? At any rate, hullo everyone.

I think I just reminded myself I am tired, because I used way too many words to say that it was night time here XD

Just in case you wanted to know what it looks like to the public after a successful Shadowrun http://www.csoonline.com/article/2944333/data-breach/hacking-team-responds-to-data-breach-issues-public-threats-and-denials.html

@trogdor actually it was just the alternate ending for Amending Fences ED posted earlier. I wanted to link that in another room.

12:43 PM
ah

@doppelgreener But everything in that picture is?

@BESW no, no, everything else

Everything not trying to kill you in Australia fits on the palm of a hand. One hand.

(not but really we have a lot of adorable things and only some of them might kill you)

12:49 PM
@Magician I don't know about that. Some of those spiders will fit in your palm.

@Aaron You misunderstand. The photo depicts said palm, and its content in its entirety.

@Magician Oh.

@doppelgreener is that Gizmo?

Yea my processing ability is hindered today. I can barely keep my eyes open.

@Magician Ahah, so the thing in Australia not trying to kill you is your own fingertip, currently held in the palm of a lethally cute rodent.

12:50 PM
@BESW It is the rodent's palm I'm talking about, yes.

1:09 PM
@BESW Was it you that I found out was a fan of Warehouse 13 or someone else...?

@sillyputty I am a fan of that show, yes.

Cool. No specific reason for mentioning that other than confirming that my memory conforms with the shared memory of others, as that is the only practical method of evaluating objective truth.

(The above is intentionally insufferable.)

@sillyputty Unless we are all figments of your imagination, of course.

@Magician Well of course.
=P

well
you say that, but
the entire world we perceive exists entirely and solely inside our heads

1:16 PM
Anyone have some tips on waking up fast. I already have some coffee

Orange juice

@doppelgreener Correction: inside my head. As far as I'm concerned, you people are squatting.

@Magician well yes that'd work

@Magician That would explain why after many years of research nowadays the only form of reality check I use to distingue between reality and dreams is that my dreams seem to have much more self-consistency that this thing called real world.

especially if you are a solipsist

1:17 PM
@Aaron I've passed several exams solely through the judicious application of orange juice. For best results add some lemon.

@Miniman Interesting. I never knew Orange juice was a pickmeup.

@Aaron It's always worked for me. Morning exams tended to go badly until I discovered its awesome powers.

@doppelgreener I have a friend who is terrified of the idea of solipsism. I use it in campaigns to terrify him.
He does not take Hastur well.

1:22 PM
@Aaron eat an apple

@sillyputty Like this: nwn2.wikia.com/wiki/Solipsism ?

@sillyputty I once had a reality warping monstrosity effectively replace me as the GM for a bit.

Though I also concur with Mini, grab some OJ

(NWN wiki is a good way to get links to some non-SRD material)

@Magician Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang. Mind if I steal that?

1:27 PM
@Magician Yeah, that's both amazing and terrifying.

@sillyputty By all means! I didn't write it up to just brag about it :))

@sillyputty His blog helped me get the most out of 4e and make the last half of the campaign really kick.

@Miniman Yea, the idea that you're the only real thing- or that reality is shaped by the perceiver. He's absolutely terrified.

If anyone knows the scenario Night Floors written up for Delta Green/Call of Cthulhu, you'll know the type of stuff that gives him nightmares.

My 4e campaign concluded with using an emotion cannon to attack the Far Realm intrusion with Strong Feelings Of Self-Identity, so...

That...makes the most sense.

1:34 PM
It was originally designed as a pain gun: strap a guy in the chair and torture him, and the army you've got the business end pointed at feels his pain.
So the party pointed it at the tentacles coming out of the rip in the sky and took turns sitting in the chair thinking hard about what was most important to them--what made them who they were, what made them feel, what drove their choices.
The city got trashed, but they saved the world. And it was a lousy city anyway.

A wretched hive of scum and villainy, was it?

It was the military industrial complex capital for the tiefling empire in the tiefling/dragonborn war.

when a city is near a battle, expect the city or part of it to be destroyed.
Damages can be limited to a single building if you have a new toy to sell, for example a crystal castle toy set.

In this case, the sky over the city was ground zero for the Far Realm's invasion of reality.
(In my version of the Points of Light setting, all the multiverse that is the Points of Light reality is a tiny sliver of coherency in the vast indefinable body of the Far Realm. The Far Realm responds to it the way our bodies would a foreign object: automatic responses engage to simultaneously destroy, encapsulate, and expel it.)

Oh jeebus. That's terrifying.

1:44 PM
That's what aberrations, and horrific fates handed down by malevolent stars, and Star Pact warlocks, and all of that stuff, are: various kinds of auto-immune effects that sometimes work together and sometimes at cross purposes in response to an unwelcome body. It just so happens that body is all known reality.

@BESW given just how many of the PoL canned adventures had Far Realm ties, this makes perfect sense

@sillyputty Makes the Primordials' goal of unmaking reality into its constituent parts and re-building it over and over like Legos, look kinda local and petty, doesn't it?

now you just need to find a place for the Tesseract in all of this (I am refereeing to the Chrono one, if I even needed to say this)

@waxeagle Oh, yeah. And when aberrations conflict, like mind flayers and aboleths, it's because they're filling different roles with different goals for dealing with the "infection."
Like white blood cells attacking a sliver while other body processes are trying to encapsulate it.
And aberrations that are just mutated local creatures? That's just the Far Realm version of using a virus to convert enemy cells to your side.

Truly, I am in the presence of mad genius.

1:50 PM
It's not all my idea. I just consolidated several different notions and codified them.
It probably started from the bit in one of the 4e manuals that says some people describe the Far Realm as a fleshy domain akin to being inside an enormous body.

Still, for the setting you are aiming to I admit this seem to work pretty well and opens some interesting possibilities.

I threw out the literal visuals but kept the metaphor and ran with it.
When the party did once enter the Far Realm itself, it looked kinda like Arizona badlands.
Except the rivers ran with blood and the terrain was populated by giant soap bubbles that were all the wrong shapes.
And the colours just weren't right, any of them.
[digs around]
> A red stone cliff rises suddenly out of a flat scrub brush desert with strange bubbles drifting through the air. Stalactites hang from the sides of the cliff like gigantic sleeping bats, and a pink waterfall tumbles from the cliff into a frothy red pool. A sticky copper-smelling fog drifts off the pool, but you are distracted by the hair rising on your head like lightning is about to strike out of the clear blue sky.

remember to bring me back some nethersand when you return :P

Oh, yeah. That's a good idea.

otherworldly settings are so much cooler than earth-like ones

2:04 PM
Personally I find that the most outlandish things I can think of are topped by reality quite easily.
Mangrove swamps and snow-covered trees:
Mineral lakes and space tsunamis:

@BESW That one is really freaky.

space tsunamis are definitely not earth-like haha

oh yeah i saw this
acid trip simulator

3:10 PM
It's pretty cool.
There is a huge line to submit pictures though.

2 hours later…
5:28 PM
well, here come the psions

~collective holding of breath~

oh wow, attacks against abil scores...interesting

5:45 PM
@sillyputty ?

Psionics are historically divisive and often times poorly handled.

Ah.

I want to see a class that takes aaaaalll that external magic power that wizards have and internalize it to make themselves stupid strong physically. I don't mean raw strength strong either. Speed, reflexes, strength. ect
My main RP character Acheron does that. He uses external attacks but against someone really powerful he internalizes the power and uses it to move faster than a normal human would be able to see.
Acheron in DND or pathfinder would have like a move speed of 200 per round and a monk would be jealous about how many attacks he would get.

What system is Acheron in?

5:50 PM
Text RP.
No system
I play characters in Pathfinder who are based on Acheron but I have never gotten anything that really and truly FIT him

Gotchya.

I might see if lord gareth would help me build a class for him.
Actually a PrC would probably be better.

Arguably, what you're describing are high-level martial classes in D&D 4e. They're "balanced" to be as powerful as magic users, but their power comes from within, in an super-human capabilities kind of way.

I haven't tried 4e. I tend to follow the rule of cool and from everything I have heard 4e doesn't like bending the rules.

Hm. I don't really know. I've run plenty of 4e sessions where I let rule of cool take hold all over the place. Then again, we have a long-running campaign where we all agreed we will abide strictly by the rules and that's the point.
I've never felt like I've had to fight the system to get it to do what I want to do.
Then again, I'm not the most versed in games mechanics theory or any of that. Someone with much greater knowledge might vehemently disagree with me.
