Relevant rules for Simulacrum:
The duplicate is a creature, partially real and formed from ice or snow, and it can take actions and otherwise be affected as a normal creature.
And:
If the simulacrum is damaged, you can repair it in an alchemical laboratory, using rare herbs and minerals...
Would it be appropriate to broaden the scope of this question re: Simulacrum, or should I open a new one? Far more of the spell description seems up in the air then I thought at first.
Does the Simulacrum have class or racial features? What are the implications of the line regarding spell slots?
Originally I just took it to mean a simple, exact duplicate of Bob the level 10 Fighter, but with half the hit points and possibly some doubt about how he heals. But now I'm reading it as creating a creature only, a Human that happens to look like Bob, but is otherwise not a fighter at all.

Is voting to close something I can do at my rep level? I thought it was, but when I actually need to it seems like I can never find the option. Hence my not on that question.
So, @Shalvenay and @Emrakul: What times/days are best for you? I can do weekdays between 23:30 and 04:00 UTC, and pretty much any time on the weekend. I'd prefer a weekend, generally speaking. I'm still waiting on harlandski to get back to me about what times are better for them.
@Adeptus 1 rank per level, all cost 1 point per rank, and you get a bonus when you put points into a CS (I forget the exact amount, been a while since I built).
If PHB doesn't say they get wings, they probably don't get wings. There may be "monster" dragonborn with wings in MM, and there was en epic destiny (or was it a paragon path?) in 4e that made them more dragon-like, so there could be something to that effect at later levels - now or in a future book.
@Shalvenay Sure, they were a PC race starting with 3e Eberron. But they are also represented in MMs, along with human bandits and elven archmages. And "monsters" get to do things players don't, like be more draconic.
Come to think of it, I think something's actually broken.
There's a server component that considers you as having left the room after you have your browser closed for a while. The past couple of days, I've signed on and found myself still present in all my rooms, not having to click "rejoin favourite rooms" or anything.
Let the quiet masses amass, let the silent crowds... encrowd. Let the ghosts fill the halls until the air is thick with their translucent presence, echoes of conversations seeking to drown out the present.
Hi, anyone (most probably @doppelgreener) willing to have a look at the tags on my new question please?
And while we're on the topic, I'm sort of on the verge of wondering whether or not it's a good question... maybe some ideas on how to make it a bit better?
And as the trembling hand of the last human on Earth tosses an rpg book onto a weakening fire, the survivor will sigh: "If only we'd listened to the warnings, if only fewer people visited the RPG.SE chat and then left." And then he will tremble no more. And there will be silence.
@doppelgreener (not arguing, merely querying) I didn't think that the dnd-5e should fit there, because while yes, the question relates to 5e, it could be applied to many different game types.
@Ben Answers to specific questions are often useful to a broader range of circumstances than the challenge you're facing. However, answers to broad questions are often too vague to be of much use to anyone.
I'm not sure it needs to be tagged dnd-5e, but it doesn't seem like a bad tag to have.
It's been my experience that it's best to err on the side of over-specificity, especially when the reason for being general is "lots of games are like that." Surprisingly often there's some particular quirk of the system that would otherwise go unaddressed by answers.
@Ben "this is relevant to loads of other games!" is almost always from D&D players over-estimating how relevant D&D is to other games. (it isn't.)
when in reality those questions are bundled up with the concepts and concerns of D&D and that specific edition of it.
such as: starting equipment. doesn't exist in most games. in others, skipping it is a big deal (like in 13th age, you probably messed up badly if you somehow skipped starting off with equipment). in D&D 3e, probably not a big deal as a couple of levels you are rolling in it compared to what you would've started with.
well, they could truly just look like elves, having totally simply taken control of their bodies' development. they may however not be totally flesh and blood, and carry indicators of that:
@DuckTapeAl @Shalvenay @Emrakul If my times work out at all, I'm happy with the Carnival of Carnage game, and am down with anything between Cthulhu-investigator and hack-and-slash
So, you're imagining them less "cyborg" in the "we have grafted technology to ourselves" sense and more in the "we have the technology to hack ourselves" sense.
Usually the chat server will consider you as having all rooms maybe 10-20 minutes after you close all chat tabs. I don't think Chat has been doing this for a couple of days, and there's several signs of this.
Whenever I enter a room in the morning, it's the only room I'm in, and I have to join ...
@DuckTapeAl Weekdays: (All times in PST) If you want to wake me up early, I can, but it'd be a 7A-10A game. After that, 5:30P-* works except Friday and maybe Wednesday. Weekends, pretty much any time works.
ah you mean I could more justifiably exercise a diamond mod close vote? Maybe, I do have my own biases about what makes valid questions or no and whatnot.
@besw I enjoy that you and mordous both simply said hi in the election chat room
hey Ive been party to plenty of those internet convos like that myself
@doppelgreener I feel like Ill be less free with VTCs than I currently am as a Mod if I am elected because of the insta-close nature on edge cases than I normally am.
could this question be improved by a little rewording? something like "what mathematical effects does artificially increasing a strength score over time have versus giving a lump sum at level 20?" not the best rewording, but i think you all get my gist.
@DavidReeve A platform for the ages, to be sure. =)
@sillyputty the issue is there isnt' a real sense of 5e balance yet, you can ask about things in comparison, but we dont have reams of forum arguments, errata, etc. to draw on to make an authoritative answer, at which point its primarily opinion based
as a whole 5e seems to have the class balance issues of pre-4e editions, but I just can't answer his question about when getting 30 strength would be "better"
getting sniped on every 5e question lately but IM glad its by newer users who seem to understand our format
@harlandski you've been writing some great answers keep it up
Hey, anybody remember that we had a question about the "party wanted to do politics instead of kill the necromancer, so the GM ended the world with zombies at their moment of legal triumph" story?
@JoshuaAslanSmith Didn't mean to be sniping at you. I agreed with your VTC as I understand the rules. Was just wondering if my idea for bettering the question was valid or no. Also, yes, I was being silly. =)
I'm having trouble digging it up as well. I remember it the players were campaigning for some kind of social justice or equality, after being warned of a necromancer and their zombie horde at the beginning. The GM destroyed the city in their moment of triumph.
@sillyputty never forget that you don't need 20 rep to be experienced. I still feel like I need to ask BESW for advice sometimes. The way I figure, if you've got 1k rep and don't post terribly you're a valid and experienced member of the community.
biggest suggestion is read meta.rpg.se whenever possible
@JoshuaAslanSmith I appreciate the sentiment and the vote of confidence! It is in my nature, however, to be extremely deferential when entering a new community. I suppose that that particular approach is better than the alternative, where I'm telling you all that I'm right and whatnot. But again, thank you. =) and @BESW I've been lead to believe that you are, in fact, omniscient. Don't tell me this is a falsehood! How scandalous.
to clarify, while you may think you need a lot of rep to rate as "experienced" you really don't; 1k is enough in my mind. That said even I feel like I'm a newbie and ask BESW for advice on the site.
@sillyputty As much as the chat is very useful for this sort of thing, @JoshuaAslanSmith has the right of it: meta is the best place for policy discussions. Chat's a decent place for quick "Hey, what's going on with that?" but if we're on the ball we'll direct you to the relephant meta post on the topic too.
@BESW Oh yes. We did get into a big discussion about that in chat. But that is the exact story I was remembering. So I am not remembering the same story as you.
@JoshuaAslanSmith I went into the room, saw @BESW arrive, said hi. After a while, left to read the fun disagreements.
@JoshuaAslanSmith A friend who is one of the temp mods over on Worldbuilding says that he avoids close votes these days unless it is blatantly closable or has 4 votes already.
The thing about worldbuilding is that you have to know what you want out of it
A number of people just want to ask strange questions, some people just want ideas on how to achieve something that doesn't break their readers suspension of disbelief in a story
We have science and hard science tags, the former is says that you need to base your answer on scientific knowledge, the latter says that you need to cite and include your hard evidence, no speculation.
We have a problem with the community being too friendly at the moment, not enough downvotes
homo sapiens moderandi evolved similarly along homo sapiens sapiens to fill a niche in their environment wherein the application of blunt force with a long appendage extending from their chest gave them a distinct advantage in acquiring food and mates. this appendage, in the common parlance, is known as the banhammer.
@Shalvenay @harlandski @Emrakul So it looks like we have two best times 0:00-3:00 UTC on Saturday, which would be 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 PM for Emrakul, Shalvenay and me, respectively. Alternately, we could play on Sunday afternoon, but that would leave out harlandski.
my issue is that the core loop of combat is very boring in general, the early game is exciting because you can wander into some giants or a snow monster or a mountain lion and easily get killed but you basically fight the same the whole game even as you unlock perks
even tough spellcasters can be face rolled by pausing and drinking 5 potions at once
ultimately I never cared about anyone in the game and there was only once quest that I found interesting (but it was buggy) the one where you infiltrate the elf embassy.
The ship of Theseus, also known as Theseus' paradox, is a thought experiment that raises the question of whether an object which has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. The paradox is most notably recorded by Plutarch in Life of Theseus from the late first century. Plutarch asked whether a ship which was restored by replacing each and every one of its wooden parts remained the same ship.
The paradox had been discussed by more ancient philosophers such as Heraclitus, Socrates, and Plato prior to Plutarch's writings; and more recently by Thomas Hobbes and John...
if you have modded every part of the game, are you still playing Skyrim?
the problem with skyrim is that everything boils down to MMO kill and fetch quests and the acting is quite bad beyond the script writing being the worst
@Shalvenay @DuckTapeAl @Emrakul unless I'm mistaken those "Saturday" times are Friday evening for you? I'll understand if you decide Sunday's more convenient...
@JoshuaAslanSmith bad. DS1 was their very first PC port ever, and they acknowledged that they messed up because they didn't know enough about how PC ports needed to be done.
I must admit I didn't play much DA2. When it came out vidya games were on the backburner for me. That said, the combat goes back to a more DA1 style- so does the art direction. Not nearly as...flamboyant.
But, y'know, leader of an important organization, need to convince disparate peoples to cooperate with you, bunch of interesting party members with distinct personalities with great moral dilemmas.
The Bioware games have been pretty much the only video games where I sit and lament over a choice because of story and moral reasons. Love that aspect of them.
@sillyputty fair warning, the first witcher game has great story but is very much a product of its time and the first major international outing of its studio, I suggest playing it with a walkthrough/guide, at least for the first 2 sections of the game. Witcher 2 is a leaping improvement. They also have major combat differences
@JoshuaAslanSmith Thanks for the heads up. My playgroup and I were just recently talking about something similar to this, too. How, as great as "open world" RPG's are, they simply can't hold a candle to TRPG's. I think someone used Skyrim as an example, but I could be wrong, where there is a side quest where two different guys ask you to give love letters to the same lady.
And your options are only to show her one or the other. And they were complaining how in a TRPG you can just say "look at these fools. you decide who you like. maybe you like me!"
@sillyputty hah yes, I should not neither witcher 1 or 2 are open world
Witcher 3 will be though, I guess read some reviews and watch videos from sources you respect to make up your mind, I whole-hardheartedly love both games, but you should look before you leap
@Aaron Oh yea, I'm among friends here and don't need to make that distinction. RPG's are just that- RPG's. It's video games that need the extra designation dagnabbit! =)
For one you don't have to put as much work into them. As a DM or player I will spend nearly 2x as much time prepping my character for game as we actually play.
Two of us tend to play games by spending a session learning all we can about what we are about to do, and then the next session stroll in and deal with it. One of the people who DMs can handle this, the other can't.
Still, nothing beats the game of M&M that we played with another friend running, where we skipped the plot, killed the bad guys and were left confused.
Our GM had plotted out the timeline for the bad guys and the head henchmen's actions. They started by kidnapping supers with regen powers. We fought them a couple of times, then randomly followed one of them all the way back to his flat. Then we stole his laptop. We went from "irritating supers" to "oh my god they are in our base" and entirly skipped the "lets find out about them" and "lets do something about them" stages.
As a result, we turned up before the backup arrived to reinforce the place.
Still have no idea what the plot was for that game beyond "making wolverine"
@Aaron Oh definitely. Video games are great! It's all depending on what you're looking for that day, and it certainly is easier to play a video game by myself than a tabletop game. But nothing quite captures the freedom and interactivity a well run rpg provides, though, IMHO. =)
@sillyputty I agree. Finding a good game though...
I was in a Pathfinder game for awhile and then the DM quit. Now I am in a 3.5 game that is fun but everyone (Excluding myself and 1 other) are very inconsistent in their attendance and the other guy who is regular is thinking of dropping out because of it. Then I would have to go on the hunt again hoping to find a DM who has the same play style as I do.
Even in the game I am in now I had an integral part of my character banned because of an alignment restriction I hadn't noticed. (Words of creation needs good alignment and I am neutral.)
Yea I understand. I'm very fortunate in that I have a group of longtime friends who are my playgroup. We all live near each other, consistent schedules, etc. I basically have the Holy Grail.
I play a homebrew campaign that dramatically decreases the time combat takes. I have 3 players, one of which has used these homebrewed efficiencies to successfully create and play multiple characters. He has 5 characters in total 2 fighters, mage, warlock, and cleric. The other two Players eac...
so i am trying to launch my character builder (dnd insider) but it says i need to install silverlight, but i already have that and it is up to date. is there an error on my part or is wizards doing something?
