Q: What's the difference between a five-act play and a three-act play?

Rand al'ThorMany stage plays - including all thirty-seven/thirty-nine of Shakespeare's - consist of five acts, while others consist of only three acts. (Are there any other common numbers of acts?) What's the difference between a three-act play and a five-act play, in terms of the kind of story they tell an...

Q: "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle": English vs. Russian translation?

ArchagonI recently started reading "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" by Haruki Murakami in English and I'm quite enjoying it. However, I learned that the English version — although well-translated — omits several whole chapters from the original! I also happen to speak Russian, and I discovered that there's a...

Q: How should we view Dan Conway?

EJoshuaSDan Conway, head of the Phoenix-Durango in Atlas Shrugged, was evidently a superb executive. He also receives (largely) positive treatment in the novel. However, the book also says that he initially went along with the industry group behind the anti-dog-eat-dog rule. First, is there any signific...

Q: What are the rules for resource requests?

EJoshuaSIt seems like a lot of other sites on the Stack Exchange network tend to discourage (or outright ban) requests for off-site resources (tutorial or book recommendations, etc.). I didn't see anything about that in this site's help center. Are resource requests allowed? If so, what are the guidelin...

@HDE226868 yeah, wednesday and thursday went great!

@Hamlet I am not sure if I have chatted with you before...I haven't been around much these past few weeks. I know Emrakul and Mithrandir from other Stacks as well as this one, but I am not familiar with you I don't think. I just wanted to say congratulations on your new modship! If there is anything that I can do to help or if you need any support on anything, please do not hesitate to ask :))

> If there is anything that I can do to help or if you need any support on anything, please do not hesitate to ask :))

@Hamlet Hehe! Sorry...I'm not very good at saying stuff sometimes. I was just offering my support :)

sorry, I mean thank you! @steelersquirrel

I know nothing about being a mod or anything...I didn't mean support in that way, just a community member willing to support our new mods :)

5:14 AM
@steelersquirrel just keep participating and being awesome!

@steelersquirrel if you want something specific: it would be great if we could get questions about more obscure authors. So I guess if you read anything that's off the beaten path, feel free to ask a question about it
But thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot.

@Hamlet Awwww. You're welcome :)
The only obscure authors that I know of write historical fiction like Alison Weir or Philippa Gregory
They're not really obscure...just not really popular here I don't think.

Whenever I see a question like In what order should I read X? I'm tempted to respond, Begging the question. The premise that you should read X is unproven. But then, I'm wicked like that.

@Hamlet The obscure authors I ask about, get responses from ignorant to insulting.
In fact, earlier today I was told that asking about a reprinting detail for a specific series was a poor question which would have been better asked as a generic question about the publishing industry.

@Hamlet-Please award me a bounty worth +50 reputation within 3 days from today as I have arrived with the correct answer to this question — user844 11 hours ago
Wow, someone's feeling entitled.

how do you get a bounty if your account is deleted

Psychically.

I suspect that's the same person as user845 et al, the poster(s) of the infamous "how to help a postgraduate student write a book" question.

wait what why'd emrakul undelete it
@Randal'Thor why?
I don't particularly see any connection between the two other than deleting their account almost instantly

2:26 PM
@Riker Undelete what?

@Randal'Thor this
look at the rev history
hamlet nuked it, emrak unnuked it, and then community deleted and locked

@Riker The accounts must have been created at almost the same time (844 and 845), and they both seem to have the same sense of entitlement.

oh true

@Riker Ah. It was undeleted so that it could be mod-flagged as spam or abusive, and thus more thoroughly removed from the system.

ah I see
also, is it even possible to award a bounty to an answer with negative score?

2:28 PM
I think such flags even help to build up IP blocks, which would be useful against such a persistent poster as this.
@Riker Yes.

on that vein, is it possible to award a bounty to an answer by a deleted user?

I assume so.

but how?
where would the rep go?
into oblivion?

Bounties, like votes, are supposed to be for marking a particularly good answer, not rewarding a particular user.

hm true

2:31 PM
HELLO MY INTERNET FRIENDS!!!
@Riker How are you my son?

Hey @steeler, long time no see! :-) How's it going?

@Randal'Thor Hey there! It's going good! How are you?

@steelersquirrel Kind of enjoying being super-busy and not having time for anything :-P

@Randal'Thor Awwww. I hear ya. I have been running around like mad this past week or so!

Well, running around like mad is pretty normal for a squirrel.

Especially when said squirrel has a German companion for the week ;)

Been climbing trees as well?

If you consider Napoleon a tree...than YES!!! Muahahahaha :P

> Steeler and Napoleon sitting in a tree ...

Hehehe!
I leave here for a while and you guys have new mods here and everything!

Not to mention meta drama.

2:48 PM
Yeah...I saw :(

3:28 PM
@steelersquirrel omw to a math competition :p
I.e. gone
So you go have fun with Napoleon :p

4:08 PM
@Randal'Thor huh? Did I miss anything?

4:48 PM
@Gallifreyan I was referring to this.

@Randal'Thor thanks. I don't see why a CW answer would cause such fuss.

5:17 PM
@Randal'Thor @Riker yeah, I forgot to flag it as spam before I deleted it

5:28 PM
@BESW if it makes you feel better I downvoted that answer.

Q: What suggests Edmund might be gay?

TorisudaWhile I was doing some research, looking for an answer for Are Frog and Toad more than just friends?, I found this article listing 15 fictional characters the author thinks are probably gay. Some of them are widely joked about (Bert and Ernie, Peter Pan), but two characters on the list were deepl...

@Randal'Thor I just looked; we've received 5 copies of that question so far. 3 were red-flag deleted. I just undeleted and abusive-flagged the other two, so now they all match :P

@Mithrandir Persistent chap, that. Someone needs to take a hint.

Really disappointed with this answer

A: What suggests Edmund might be gay?

EJoshuaSNo, there's absolutely no textual evidence for this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but C. S. Lewis doesn't really explicitly discuss LGBT issues in any of his major works. You are also correct in stating that it would be highly anachronistic for him to intentionally make a character gay given the tim...
