At best it's a quote taken out of context from a scientific article, and at worst, which is very often, just an conspiracy theory. An actively harmful conspiracy theory, I might add.

@skullpatrol One thing to note is scientists may also adhere to some debunked beliefs, especially someone that lived decades ago. Scientific practices are always trying to come up with more effective teaching methods that would encourage openmindedness and skepticism at the same time.

@Knight This is a dangerous argument. A very steep slippery slope. Conspiracy theories have obviously evolved, and there's always some scientific sounding gobbledygook associated with many scams, like the bond angle nonsense up there.

@CowperKettle The real stuff that happens in the scientific community usually doesn't make it to news

Every notion that seems trivial but appears in scientific journals will have some pedants fighting for it

The current global problem is lack of scientific and critical thinking, not lack of knowledge per se

@MartianCactus You can give a million reasons for why something is happening, and as long as it does not conflict with experimental data, it doesn't matter which is the correct rationalization, when scientific correctness doesn't matter.

A: Why is the boiling point of pentane (36.1 °C) slightly higher than that of diethyl ether (34.6 °C)?

Ki11akd0gThis is perhaps not a very scientific answer, but consider how branched alkanes have a lower boiling point than straight chain alkanes. This is due to the inability of the individual molecules to "stack" (if you want to get technical it's to do with surface area). Now imagine stacking diethyl e...

But it's not a scientific explanation.

But in a more chemistry, scientific way.

If people see they can find out something interesting about your diagram, like some scientific point illustrated in the content, they'd like the diagram, no matter how crappy it looks. :)
Jan 27, 2016 19:59
So my point being, try to include nice scientific facts in the [subtle] details of your diagram @Leu.

If you want scientific answers to most stuff, SE is the choice. If you need material for serious research, Research gate is good, but honestly any community on the internet can't be that good by definition. But if you're looking to nag about how Microsoft's last products suck, Yahoo answers is the place.

Q: How can a substance be diluted to nothing?

JasonIf I start with a small amount of a substance, and I dilute that substance with billions of gallons of water, what is the scientific explanation for there being no (actually zero) remaining molecules of that original substance? This question is related to the practice of homeopathic dilutions. I...
